This paper makes use of indigenous documents to analyze the way a caste of itinerant salt traders combined worship and commerce in the interior of Tamil-speaking South India. The traders referred to themselves as Nakarattars, and even today their descendants call themselves by this name. But since the colonial period, they have been known to outsiders as Nattukottai Chettiars. Initially op-
erating within a small trading territory, they gradually expanded the range and scope of their commercial activities. By the second half of the nineteenth century, they had become the chief merchant-banking caste of South India, with a commercial empire that extended throughout Southeast Asia (Rudner 1985). This paper focuses on Na- karattar activities in the seventeenth century, when their commercial expansion was just getting under way and when the close association of this expansion with rituals of religious gifting was already apparent. The two main purposes of the paper are (1) to illuminate the ritual dimension of commercial activity in precolonial South
India and (2) to enrich current transactional models of the relationship between tem- ples and social groups in South India by incorporating a mercantile perspective.
