This research paper analyzes the effects that the First World War had on women in the Ottoman Empire from 1914 to 1916. Women in the Ottoman Empire were negatively affected by food and clothing shortages as well as a housing crisis. The role of women also expanded due to the war by turning to prostitution, joining the workforce and army, and furthering their education. The war gave women new opportunities and roles in society; however, it created a very harsh reality for women trying to make a living. This research was conducted through a literature review of primary and secondary sources, books, and peer-reviewed journals, to provide a narrative of the women's changing roles and effects that war had on women in the Ottoman Empire.
