Both Marla and Gail bring new enthusiasm and generosity to the board and it's many projects to benefit Easter Island. A scholarship award for a Rapanui student has been initiated by the Easter Island Foundation, thanks to a grant from board member, Marla Wold. The deadline for applications is I October 200 I, for an award to be presented for the school year, 2002. This is a first step in our scholarship program. The scholarship award was advertised on the island on TV and we quickly had two dozen applications. We are extremely proud to be in a position to make such a tangible and useful contribution to benefit the people of Easter Island. Board member Alan Drake has been working on our web site to make it more useful and appealing. Pass it on-this is THE place to fmd information about the ElF and our projects on the island, with links to other island sites. Please check it out and give us your feedback. Website: www.islandheritage.org Thank you all for your generous support. You are helping to make a difference in a very special and unique place in the world-Rapa Nui.

This chapter describes the conservation investigations undertaken within a pilot project known as the EISP Conservation Initiative, which was conducted for 7 weeks and over four field seasons from 2010 to 2012 (Fischer and Bahamondez Prieto, Conservation investigations: Preliminary report, Easter Island Statue Project (EISP) Conservation Initiative, Archaeological Institute of America Site Preservation Committee, EISP Archives, 2014). The Archaeological Institute of America Site Preservation Committee supported the conservation initiative and excavation. The challenges addressed during phase 1 of the conservation initiative are summarized, and its redirection during phase 2 is described. Partnership formation between EISP and the Rapa Nui community to enable informed consideration of site preservation is addressed. Issues of ethics and values clarification, intellectual property rights in the digital age, entrepreneurial interests, and economic sustainability in the modern era are explored.

Drawing upon this information, and the research collaboration between two active archaeological projects on Rapa Nui - the Easter Island Statue Project and the Rapa Nui Geochemical Project - we trace the prehistoric transfer of basalt resources from the Ava o'Kiri and Pu Tokitoki quarry complexes to the moai (statue) quarry at Rano Raraku between AD 1455-1645. Our conclusions better highlight socio-political and economic interaction during Rapa Nui prehistory, while delineating the relationship between adze and pick production and moai manufacture. In this article, we report: 1) a synthesis of a five-meter deep field excavation of moai RR-001-...
