The merits of transmigration are heavily disputed by two contrasting knowledge claims: developmentalism and case-study-based constructivism. The developmental worldview argues it is an essential tool for population management and regional development. In contrast, the case-study-based constructivist worldview proposes that the program creates social segregation and inequality in peripheral regions. Given the limited evidence on the impacts of transmigration, this thesis assesses how participating households fare, with the important caveat that the program impacts the receiving regions as well. Using household panel data in Indonesia, I find that the households participating in the transmigration program experienced an accumulation in family wealth and an incre...

Illustrated by the case of Java, this paper explores the role of regional planning in facilitating megaregion emergence. It reveals that sectoral and ad hoc national planning policies, although not intentionally aimed to guide spatial development, implicitly promote the emergence of this megaregion. This is particularly registered in the construction of megaprojects aimed at increasing regional competitiveness through the improvement of interregional connectivity and facilitating exurbanization through the building of in-between cities.

The historical approach used to understand the urbanization dynamics from the year 1200 until the present time. The study passes through important historical events: early Archipelago, precolonial, colonial state, late colonialization, Japanese occupation, Indonesia’s independence, Indonesia’s democratic experiment, guided democracy, new order, fall of the new order, and post-Suharto era, in which the history of urbanization pattern is also visualized on the map. From a long time frames the colonial state, new order, and the post-1997 financial crisis are the most important influence for Java’s urbanization. From the study, it reveals that the urbanization in Java Island has undergone a series of events that made the urban population contracted or expanded; hence its centers moved to different places. The study also underlines the influence of colonial and economic cri...

Today, energy utilization in land transportation sector depends on fossil fuel. However, dependency toward fossil fuel is unsustainable due to unreliability in terms of supply and price. For instance, President Instruction number 10 of the year 2005 regarding energy savings and energy mix encourage the shift of energy composition towards a bigger percentage of renewable energy consumption. Energy transition to environmental friendly energy becomes a solution to address the huge demand of transportation energy in DKI Jakarta. Nevertheless, the process of transition to energy diversification is still difficult to be implemented due to institutional problems. Transition management is one of methods to achieve sustainable transportation system that suitable to environemtal friendly policy. The aim of this research is to identifies the occurrence of energy transition in land transportation sector by understanding how far the transition happens and how Jakarta manage their energy transition. Afterwards, driving factors and inhibiting factors within energy transition management in land transportation sector are explored. For this purpose, statistical analysis to observe the development of energy diversification in DKI Jakarta based on historical data from several years is conducted. After reviewing formal documents and literatures, we structure the in-depth interview transcripts by coding analysis in order to produce a comprehensive, yet compact conclusion of energy transition management within land transportation sector in DKI Jakarta. The results of the analysis reveal that DKI Jakarta is in the takeoff phase in management transition with the usage of renewable energy and the appearance of physical changes. The analysis also identifies that driving factors and inhibiting factor within Jakarta's transition management.
