Preferential voting is one of the signs of the personalization process in different cases (McAllister, 2007; Karvonen, 2010). Voters choose candidates for different reasons (Karvonen, 2004; Marsh, 2007; Van Holsteyn & Andeweg, 2010). This is mainly the demand side. In this paper, we want to examine the “supply side”. Studies on electoral systems and party characteristics have shown effects on the number preferential vote for candidates (Carey&Shugart, 1995, 2005). Elected candidates’ characteristics (such as PVEA) have also effects on preferential voting (Shugart&al., 2005). But the research did not pay enough attention to other candidates – those who were not elected – and their characteristics. Using the 2014 Belgian Candidate Survey, we want to examine whether the candidates’ characteristics have an effect on preferential vote. In addition, we intend to check whether there are differences between elections (regional versus federal) and between regions (Flanders versus Wallonia versus Brussels)

These differences affected indeed the political calibre of the candidates recruited in terms of insiders/outsiders ratio and therefore the candidate-centredness of their campaign. Insiders conduct more candidate-centred campaign, use more campaign instruments and mobilise more a campaign team. Finally, the meso and micro-determinants of campaign personalisation differ partially from those that were statistically significant in the more “regular” 2007 federal elections. Having a safe place on the list and belonging to a green party were significant for all the components of candidate-centred campaigns, while party and constituency magnitude, ideological difference with party and gender were insignificant in some elections.

We come back to the triadic delegation and accountability relationship between candidates, voters and parties that were developed based on principal–agent theory, and emphasise the most relevant findings of this book that inform this triad. The chapter also takes a critical stance to the book by reviewing the questions used in the CCS surveys and identifying the most important shortcomings of some questions. This chapter ends with some suggestions for new avenues of research for candidate surveys, as case studies but especially from a comparative perspective.

Building on the literature about the diverse determinants of populist party support, we investigate whether issue considerations and populism-related motivations play a bigger role in the electoral calculus of politically sophisticated voters. Using data from the 2019 general elections in Belgium, we focus on the cases of Vlaams Belang (VB) and Parti du Travail de Belgique- Partij van de Arbeid (PTB-PVDA). We find evidence suggesting that political sophistication enhances the impact of populism-related motivations on populist party support, although the effects are contingent on the party. Moreover, we show that, for issue considerations, the moderation effect only comes into play for VB voters: the impact of antiimmigrant considerations is greater at increasing levels of political sophistication
