However, it wasn't just a simple amusement but a consubstantial part of the life of most of the Romans, especially from those who lived in big cities. Yet, although Juvenal's celebrated aphorism of panem et circenses emphasizes its use as an instrument of social domination by the Roman authorities, that saying doesn't imply the whole truth. It's true that the passion involved was genuine and even it could affect the very identities of the supporters, but also had important repercussions and echoes on the political and social life −but also military, religious and economic− at all levels during more than a millennium. This monograph is divided into two parts. The first one is dedicated to examine the history of Roman circus from its beginning till the end of the rule of the Byzantine emperor Maurice, while the second part presents the competition and scrutinizes its impact, the supporters and its main actors, as the charioteers and the pantomimes.

Although we don’t deny singularities into the different Men of Sea who lived in this period, there are some aspects that are common to every sailor concerning their conditions of life and work regardless of their very different origins. In fact, their life-style clashed directly with the earth based society. These features shaped an identity that is more evident to recognize when we use ancient sources, which writers always came from the highest hierarchies of their societies or acted as speakers of these, that usually scorned the sailors because of the terrible fear that sea aroused on them, the nature of their economic activities, their different customs and the liberty that enjoyed Men of Sea because they could pollute the established order. In fact, we can speak of a mariner identity in opposition to the earthly-based society.

It pretends to show with a single glance a general, basic but thorough overview of the main historical axes on which this period is developed.

The exhibition comes after the positive experience provided by a previous exhibition, entitled "La diosa y su isla: Chipre y Astarté/Afrodita en el Mediterráneo", developed by the research group CEFYP. also based in the Department of Ancient History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

More than fifty specialists -historians, archaeologists, philologists and philosophers- from different Spanish and European universities worked and made possible this exhibition. It is composed by 62 panels, each of which analyzes a theme, a historical phenomenon or diverse social, economic, political and religious topics that characterize the end of antiquity in the Western world and more specifically in Later Roman Hispania from an academic point of view but also artistic, as images and texts are tangled in benefit of a literary discourse. For its accomplishment we had the decisive support of the Department of Ancient History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Madrid's German Archaeological Institute (DAI), the Centro de Estudios Fenicios y Púnicos (CEFYP) and the publishing company Galaxia - Guttenberg.

Each panel focuses on a different aspect of society of Late Antiquity, so that exhibition can be covered completely independently and in no particular order of panels. After its presentation at the International Conference "Tempvs Barbaricvm: el Imperio y las Hispanias al final de la Antigüedad " (1-3 March 2011) at the Faculty of Geography and History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the exhibition has travelled to other Spanish and European universities.

The exhibition is opened to any institution, whatever academic or cultural or political which is interested in spreading historical knowledge. Please, contact for further details.

This city was strategically based on central Spain, in a hill alongside Tagus river surrounded by two streams running Eastwards, Arroyo del Barranco, and Westwards, Arroyo Salobre. Also, there is evidence of river navigation at the Tagus river as some amphorae were found associated to a hypothetic Roman pier in the nearby northern village of Trillo. In this paper we want to summarize the publications of the multidisciplinary research team involved in the study of this archaeological site.
