The prodigia, perfectly ingrained in the system of religious legitimization of the ruler in roman times, are considered a direct expression of the will of the deity, which shows its support or rejection. The apparent knowledge of classics about how the rumor operates, and the continuous link established between it and the appearance and spreading of prodigia, lead us to propose a political use of both phenomena during the Empire. Through the comparison between classics and modern psychology of rumor, we will analyze to what extend the link between prodigia and rumor is relevant to understand the roman prodigia.

This panel aims at discussing some questions about the definition of “minoritarian” groups or small religious groups in relationship to the majority or main stream religions. Reflecting on the past and focusing on the Ancient Near East, the Mediterranean and the Christian world in Antiquity, it is our purpose to contribute to a critical understanding of the contemporary globalized religious dynamics as a coherent part of world history. In this panel, we aim to investigate the interplay between the global framework and the local dynamics in societies, as a historical matrix within which the religious minority as a concept has been conceived and the religious minoritarian groups self-represented. Such a poly-focused field of research aims at critically reflecting on the cultural (political, social, religious, linguistic) network within which the religious groups interacted with other groups, on the normative space within which the dynamics of inclusion and/or exclusion had been achieved, on the narrative social understanding of religious minority as concept, identity, group, and agency. Regarding religious groups as loci of cohabitation, rather than emphasizing their ideological and theological polarizations, we suggest taking into account the sources they produced as instruments of self-representation.

Research paper thumbnail of CfP: Relocating Sacrifice in the History of Religions: Rethinking the Relationship between Theory and Practice (Part II) - European Association for the Study of Religions (EASR) 2016 Conference ‘Relocating Religion’ 28 June – 1 July 2016, Helsinki

Sacrifice is a keyword in the study of religious practices. Its centrality has been noticed by J.... more Sacrifice is a keyword in the study of religious practices. Its centrality has been noticed by J.Z. Smith when he holds that «from the immense variety of human ritual activities, a few have been lifted out by scholars as privileged examples on which to build theories of ritual – preeminently sacrifice». As a result, the various theories of sacrifice proposed from 19th c. onward have forced the rethinking of related theories of ritual that, still today, make difficult to critically approach sacrifice as a heuristic category. The confusion between a stipulative definition and a real definition involves a common use/misuse of the term sacrifice to interpret, define, or describe the religious practices. But too often some scholars of religions fail to remember that sacrifice is not the reality of what it denotes, rather it is a successful shared representation and a symbolical device. The issue at stake is not the definition of what sacrifice should be or denote, rather what place it takes in the interpretation of any religious phenomenon despite the critical attempts to rethink the performative nature of any ritual act and the debate inspired by the linguistic turn. The panel aims to discuss the relationship between theory and practice in the Western cultural history and its impact on the cultural filters and paradigms through which the scholars of religions have conceived and interpreted the ‘empirical labor’ involved in any religious code of behaviour.
