Emmanuelle Waeckerlé is a (French) London-based artist, composer and curator whose practice and research have evolved from the single discipline of Fine Art Photography into multiple, interconnected work zones: conceptual writing, performance, new musical composition and artist-publishing. Between 2007 and 2014 she was part of the small team running the centre des livers d’artistes in St Yrieix-la-Perche in France.
Emmanuelle is a Reader in Fine Art and Relational Practices and director of bookRoom post digital research platform at UCA Farnham, an umbrella for a number of interrelated activities (publishing, a collection, conferences and exhibitions, PhD).
bookRoom is a conceptual/virtual space within the school of Fine Art and Photography at UCA, that has been engaged with editorial, curatorial and critical research since 2009, a playground and a platform for experimenting with, sharing, debating the conceptualization, materialization, dissemination of printed and published material. Through its activities and affiliated PhDs students, bookRoom has tracked the rapid growth and impact of digital technology on the way printed material (image, text, graphic) is created, consumed and shared as well as the parallel histories and practices of the artist book and the photobook
Emmanuelle has edited 2 anthologies of essays and works on contemporary publishing and the interplay between paper and pixel. The book is alive! (2013, RGAP) CODE X - Paper, Ink, Pixel and Screen (2015, bookRoom press). In 2016 She edited and wrote an introductory essay on artist working with Archive for RISE WITH YOUR CLASS NOT FROM IT.
Emmanuelle Waeckerlé is a multidisciplinary artist, experimental vocalist, free improviser and composer. Her practice emerges between text and performance, between the page and the body. Her scores, publications, installations, performances, and workshops propose alternative ways of engaging with interior or exterior landscapes and each other. Her music and scores are distributed by Edition Wandelweiser.
Recent publications include Reading (story of) O (uniformbooks, 2015), a direction out there, readwalking with Thoreau (MA BIBLIOTHÈQUE, 2021), a direction out there DOUBLE cd (ed. wandelweiser, 2021). Her works are held in collections including V&A, the Poetry Library at Southbank Centre, The Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, Centre Des Livres d’Artistes, Saint-Yrieix-La-Perche.
She is co-curating here.here, a series of streaming concerts of experimental music at UCA Farnham and Iklektik in London. She has been a longstanding attendee of Eddie Prevost improvisation workshop and founder member of Bouche Bée improvising duo with Petri Huurinainen (guitar)
Emmanuelle exhibits and performs regularly nationally and internationally, recently to launch her Ode (owed) to O cd (Wandelweiser, 2017) at Klangraum in Düsseldorf (July 2017), “Speak//If You can: Text, Scores with Antoine Beuger at London’s Cafe Oto (February 2018), with a.pe.ri.od.ic ensemble at Constellation in Chicago (April 2018), by APTLensemble at A Place to Listen in Victoria (Canada, January 2019). She is part of the Wandelweiser Composer meet Composer summer mentoring project and host a house concert series Cosy Nook since 2016.

Emmanuelle Waeckerlé studied Photography in the mid to late 80’s at sir John Cass college (now Metropolitan university) under Pavel Buchler, Mick Williamson, Sharon Kivland and Paul Trevor, all practicing photographers and artists linked to the influential and politically minded Camerawork gallery. Since finishing her MA in Fine Art Media under Stuart Brisley and Liz Rhodes at the Slade in 1996 she has been working as a practicing artist always operating at the experimental edge of photography, performance art and publishing
Since 1994 her teaching has been mainly in Photograph and Fine Art at BA/MA level as well as PHD supervision, specializing on the interplay of the medium with other ones; Photography and Performance art, the photograph and the printed page, the interplay between verbal, visual and sonic language.
