These were mostly about the version of the past that should be taught to students. The debates over the selection of the story to be taught were essentially disputes over the identity that should be promoted through history education. On one hand the supporters of a Hellenocentric orientation argued in favor of promoting a Greek national identity, while the supporters of a Cyprocentric orientation supported the idea of promoting a Cypriot civic identity common for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The dominance of the Hellenocentric approach during the 20th century is being challenged by the Cyprocentric one at the beginning of the new millennium. At the same time a new disciplinary approach in history education has emerged. Although at...

The pack consists of three main sections: 1) a theoretical introduction to debates and approaches to history education; 2) an overview of missing persons from a global perspective, including case studies of Guatemala, Spain, Morocco, the former Yugoslavia and Cyprus;and 3) a lesson sequence which offers interactive educational activities that enable students to grapple with the question of how different societies have addressed this painful issue. The pack comes with a Resources CD with sample handouts, a DVD of a documentary film prepared by the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus, and a DVD of adocumentary film prepared by The Elders. This pack is the outcome of a collaboration among the AHDR, The Elders, and the International Center on Transitional Justice.
Historical Encounters: A journal of historical consciousness, historical cultures, and history education
History education in both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot educational systems in Cyprus... more History education in both the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot educational systems in Cyprus is dominated by ethnocentric approaches. In the case of the former this is the idea of history education promoting a Hellenocentric narrative which aims to cultivate a Greek national identity, while in the case of the latter the promoted Turkocentric narrative seeks to cultivate a Turkish one. In the Greek Cypriot educational system this narrative tells the story of Cyprus as part of the Greek nation and the hardships that Greek Cypriots have suffered from their enemies and especially the Turks (Perikleous, 2015a). A similar narrative in many aspects exists in the Turkish Cypriot educational system; however in this the roles are reversed (Onurkan-Samani & Tarhan, 2017). In this sense one can argue that the teaching of history in both communities is utilised as a medium not only to create a collective memory but also to antagonise one community to another. These narratives are challenged...

It can be argued that understanding past behaviour is essential for historical understanding, and therefore students' ideas about making sense of people in the past are important for history education. This article reports on aspects of a broader qualitative study of students' and teachers' ideas of historical empathy. More specifically, the study explores…

Drawing from literature within the areas of history education, philosophy of history and philosophy of mind, the paper argues for the impossibility and incompatibility of these notions in relation to historical empathy. It also discuss what is involved in understanding past behaviour and briefly suggests key issues that should be taken into consideration when teaching towards the development of ideas of historical empathy.

Thirty two students of a primary school in Cyprus, eleven in Year 4, nine in Year 5 and twelve in Year 6, completed two pencil and paper tasks which asked questions about two practices in the past. Child Labour in early 20th century Cyprus and boys’ education in Ancient Sparta. At the same time a new disciplinary approach in history education has emerged. Although at the moment this is wrongly associated by many with the Cyprocentric one, it is essentially radically different from both traditional approaches. Despite the fact that during the last 4 years history education has not been at the centre of attention, political agendas and the current implementation of the New Curriculum 2010 for history education can produce new debates.

Thirty-two students from a primary school in Cyprus completed two pencil-and-paper tasks which asked questions about two practices in the past: child labour in early 20th-century Cyprus and boys’ education in ancient Sparta.
In general, data analysis suggests that the students in this study hold similar ideas of historical empathy to those identified by international research. There is, however, evidence which, while it does not overturn the findings of previous studies, suggests possible new ways of understanding students’ ideas of historical empathy.
Based on the study’s findings, this paper suggests possible ways in which students’ preconceptions can be identified and addressed, in order for them to move to more powerful ideas which will help them in their attempts to make sense of people in the past.

Debates about history education are mostly about the kind of the past that should conveyed to the students and the social aims which should be promoted through history. A recently emerged community of educators specialised in history education advocates in favour of an approach in history education which aims to develop students' historical thinking. The current reform process has to either move towards a new approach or preserve the current status quo.
