The voluminous bibliography produced during these years, links the associations’ 19th- and 20th- centuries establishment and proliferation to urban sociality, the emergence of the middle classes, democratization, and the requirements of nation-building. Despite the abundant literature on the associational phenomenon of the Greek communities in the Ottoman Empire and Greece, voluntary associations in Cyprus have been understudied. Illuminating references notwithstanding, the associational history of the island has not been comprehensively analyzed. This is a vacuum that my research project titled “Expanding the public sphere, enhancing popular activism: Greek associations in Cyprus (1878-1931),” aims to address.
The project falls into three main parts. The first is to map, quantify and explain the growth of Greek voluntary associations in the six main cities of Cyprus (Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Famagusta, Paphos and Kyrenia) from 1878 to 1931, during the first phase of the British colonial rule. The second is to examine their role as channels of formation and dissemination of modern political ideas (nationalistic, secular) and as means for the expansion of the public sphere of Cyprus. The third part concentrates on unravelling the networks of membership, tracing the professional occupation of their administrative boards and analyzing their political activity. This will allow the study of associations as assets to emerging politicisation and popular activism, and to correlate them to local, family and professional networks.
The basic sources for this research include official and private archives of the 19th and 20th centuries in Cyprus, Greece and Great Britain, newspapers as well as secondary bibliography. The deliverables include an article in an international peer-reviewed journal, an annotated catalogue of the educational and philanthropic associations of Nicosia and Limassol, two presentations (one at a conference and one in a workshop), a seminar at the University of Cyprus, and a dataset stored in a web application.

Researching this case-study, the thesis aims to elaborate on a question of diplomatic history: to what extent and in what way can a diplomat transcend the limits of his profession and contribute not only to the implementation but also to the formation of his country’s foreign policy? With a comprehensive introductory part, the thesis sets the stage for situating Gennadius’ professional activity. It appraises fundamental features of his beliefs and ideology, his educational and family background, and his generation’s experiences and relations with the British factor. The context and the ideas of his first journalist endeavors are presented and his 180page treatise for the Dilessi Murders (1870) is thoroughly anatomized being the blue print of his defensive rhetoric about the inadequacies of the Greek Kingdom, as well as the spring-board for his career in the Greek diplomatic corps. The main body of the thesis focuses on Gennadius’ diplomatic activity during important Balkan and European crises, such as the Eastern Crisis (1875-1878), the Eastern Rumelia Crisis (1885-1886), the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and the First World War (1914-1918). Within or parallel to these events, less known aspects of Gennadius’ contribution to foreign politics such as the cultivation of relations with the British Liberal party and the planning and execution of a wide range propaganda in favor of the Greek claims are unveiled. Finally, the settlement of the outstanding loans of 1824-1825 and the successful negotiations for the American and British tariff on the Greek currants are also analyzed being two diplomatic successes in favor of both the country’s foreign affairs and its economy.

Having spent most of his life in England to the Greek legation of which he had been appointed for more than 20 years, Gennadius was influenced by the ongoing British discussion on the “American miracle”. His perception was, however, fostered during two visits there, a professional (1888) and a private one (1893). He was involved in its political life as the official negotiator of the Greek Government but also enjoyed the culture, witnessed the wealth, the galloping development and made many acquaintances. All this left on him an impression. He commented on the importance of the British influence on the American civilization, he acknowledged mostly the material and intellectual progress of its people and foresaw the potential of its thriving economy in world politics.

This reaction was majorly triggered by Venizelos’ handling of the country’s foreign affairs in 1912-1913.The anti-Venizelist’s rhetoric against Venizelos diplomacy invested heavily in tradition and the role of king and was a harbinger of the national schism of 1915-1916.

Founded in 1871, and functioning uninterruptedly ever since, the Brotherhood faced the challenge of simultaneously coping with a constant stream of refugees, while adapting itself to the changes brought about by the city’s incorporation to the Greek state after 1912. Three major activities of the Brotherhood constitute the backbone of the article’s analysis: the management of the city’s cemeteries, which had been within its jurisdiction since 1875, the awarding of scholarships, and the financial assistance to individuals, social agencies and refugee associations. The Brotherhood’s functioning during this period does not only show the scale of charitable activities but also reveals its flexibility to changing times.
