From an institutional perspective, Jewish religious heritage was perceived as an obstacle to national identity. On the other hand, using the account of the everyday life in the Jewish colonies, I argue how Jewish narratives intersected and assembled with already secularized Catholic narratives in the construction of the “secular” citizen. The analysis provides a way to consider the complexity through which seeming secular discourses overlap and connect with religious ones in the making of kinds of people.

New notions of republicanism, with clear educational and moral implications, were introduced in Buenos Aires. A strong notion of agency and the pastoral role of the nascent state changed. The republican awards, given as prizes by the government to exemplary citizens, illustrate how the nascent republican government aimed to shape the early Argentinean citizen. In those years, the republican awards served as a pastoral technique employed by the republican government. The role of shepherding souls played by the Catholic Church for centuries in South America was now restaged in the domain of a republican pastorate through schooling, and specifically through the republican awards.

Through a genealogical discourse analysis, I examine educational reports issued by Argentinean authorities in the early twentieth century that made the Jew out to be a dangerous other, as well as the Gerchunoff 's account of the everyday life in Jewish colonies, to show how Jewish narratives intersected and assembled in the construction of the Argentinean republican citizen. In times when non-Western institutional religions are raising fears and anxiety in many Western countries, this article illustrates how a cultural historical approach to religion is essential for a comprehensive analysis of how religion shapes the republican citizen.

Through a genealogical discourse analysis, I investigate how religious discourses become interrelated and even undistinguishable as a system of reasons that shaped the Argentinean citizen in the early 19 th century. In fact, theological patterns of ordering and interpreting human experience shaped to a large degree the conditions, possibilities and limitations of the early Argentinean citizen. In order to analyze how Catholic narratives shaped the Argentinean republican citizen, the article examines Spanish Colonial narratives and republican ones.
