Movement in Sheringham Park is expressed on a number of different levels: it reflects correspondence between motion and social status and deals with the concepts of arrival and display; it acknowledges different speeds and kinds of movement, such as walking or driving in a carriage, and is concerned with constructing the best experience in each case; it challenges the ideas of 'inside' and 'outside' by facilitating free movement between them and thus blurring the boundaries; and finally, it addresses the metaphorical and metaphysical aspects of movement – movement of time, weather and even stages of life. The park and hall, built with great love and care, very much speak of Humphry Repton's philosophy as an architect and landscape designer and go beyond the common perception of the 'picturesque' – instead of a series of stations and beautiful snapshots, the park and hall present themselves in a fluid motion, deprived of a rigid route and full of minute changes. It is through a dynamic engagement with the visitor that the park is brought to life.
The Late Antique complex of buildings associated with St Stephen's church at Umm er-Rasas, Jordan... more The Late Antique complex of buildings associated with St Stephen's church at Umm er-Rasas, Jordan, is grouped around a core consisting of four conjoined ecclesiastical structures. The spatial arrangement of the complex, puzzling on first acquaintance, appears to respond to multiple uses and to be designed to accommodate the different aspects of liturgy performed in it -the overall space is architecturally zoned according to liturgical fucntions.

The Complex Associated with St Stephen's Church at Umm er-Rasas, Jordan-The Late Antique building complex associated with St Stephen's church at Umm er-Rasas, Jordan, is grouped around a core consisting of four conjoined ecclesiastical structures. The spatial arrangement of the complex, puzzling on first encounter, appears to serve multiple uses and to be designed to accommodate the different aspects of liturgy performed in it. The overall space is thus architecturally zoned according to liturgical functions. Being spread out but interconnected, these areas establish a sequential route for movement. As the space of the complex gradually unfolds, the visitor must undertake a physical journey while simultaneously taking a spiritual journey through the liturgy. The process symbolically parallels a Christian's journey through life. The significance of baptism, where the journey begins, is deliberately emphasised, and it is then echoed throughout, being especially prominently stated in St Stephen's itself.

This thesis offers an assessment of Anglo-Saxon sites-secular and ecclesiastical-featuring alignment, analyses their recurring features and addresses functional and cultic aspects of these sites. One of the resulting conclusions is that alignment is a fairly uniform phenomenon across both secular and ecclesiastical sites, and in fact secular and ecclesiastical contexts should not be treated as separate. It has also been possible to demonstrate that alignment is an Insular phenomenon and not a result of Continental influence, which challenges the existing research on this subject. Instead, it has been proposed that Anglo-Saxon alignment has its origins in the British Isles and was inspired by a multitude of existing prehistoric linear compositions in the landscape.
