The article aims to combine the areas of Design Anthropology and Design Activism with practices within a popular feminist course. By research through design, we aim to contribute to new practices in participatory design processes in relation to specific socio-political contexts. We present the main concepts of Design Anthropology and Design Activism and relate these theories and practices to three field experiments, analyzing the use of conversation disposifits in partnership with a popular feminist course. The research provides inputs to rethink the investigative practice and the knowledge-making in design and proposes a political action for research and practice in design.

We will approach how Paulo Freire's pedagogical propositions can add layers of social and political reflection to discussions about democratic design, articulating the notion of Design Things. It is based on a literature review and proposes the confrontation with broader sustainability concepts according to Sachs, Sen and UNESCO, who uses also the territorial, cultural and political perspectives besides the traditional economic, social and environmental tripod. The exemplary case of an iniciative of communitary theatre project, named " Entrou por uma Porta " (Entered through a Door), placed in Asa Branca's favela, in Rio de Janeiro city, is an experience to discuss and plan solutions to the local development in the neighborhood. The case will be presented and analyzed in relation to the concepts of sustainability. As main result, we identified a close relationship between sustainability concepts and cultural production evolving in Rio de Janeiro's favelas. Moreover, this paper proposes that the study of culture production in favelas can be covered, situated within the context, in the ethical production and consumption

The argument draws on the work of scholars who are engaged in counter-hegemonic design research and practice, and questions the knowledge production structures within academia. ‘Militant research’ is presented as a Latin American theoretical-political approach to knowledge production in social sciences, engaging processes of research, educational, and political actions, and uniting organic intellectuals, researchers, and social movements. Inspired by this perspective, principles for Militant Design Research are outlined to stimulate alliances between designers and social movements for the collective production of knowledge, to overcome situations of oppression in and out of academia.

In this full day interactive workshop, we hope to map practices of Participatory Design Otherwise, and reflect about what does it means to participate by/from the Global South, especially Latin America. Our intention is to make visible the nature and territoriality of these ways of doing. Understanding that this event will be held for the first time in Latin America, we seek a theoretical alignment with Latin American thinkers, running this workshop based on the techniques and methods of Theatre of the Oppressed, developed by Augusto Boal. We will also use references inspired by black and indigenous ancestry, as the “Pedagogia das Encruzilhadas (the Pedagogy of the Crossroads) and the “Pedagogia do Parente” (Relative's Pedagogy). As indigenous leader Ailton Krenak says, we need to “postponing the end of the world” by nurturing our subjectivities and expand our horizons to other creativities and narratives. That's what we expect to see in this rich encounter.

The goal is to turn peer review into a critical tool to inform established knowledge in PD with Latin American perspectives, using five principles: citational justice, epistemic justice, emancipation, relationality and positionality. Through this exercise we offer reflections, experiences, and literature to critically expand PD's core as the field moves to global contexts. We discuss two tensions in this move: 1) design as socio-historical production, and 2) emancipatory commitments of participation when 'turning South'. We end with a critical reflection about the potential and limitations of our reformulation of peer review and its Southern politics. We offer these reflections to PD as a way to invite radical political solidarities across borders.

Moreover, we compare the CFs in different types of settlements to test the “low-carbon illusion of cities” hypothesis. In territorial assessment schemes, highly urbanized areas are often reported as low-carbon areas in comparison to country averages or regional averages, but at the same time they are the key centers for consumption and actually just outsource/externalize the emissions they or their residents emit. Therefore, while cities often show reduced transport related emissions compared to less urbanized areas, the emissions from other forms of consumption typically increase and the overall CF can be greater in the densest settlements. What we found is that the CFs are the highest in the most highly urbanized areas and somewhat lower in more rura...

This is one of the main questions of the project LASIN – Latin American Social Innovation Network. Specifically, one of the main activities of LASIN is to design and run what are called SISU – Social Innovation Support Units, i.e., units dedicated to support the promotion of social innovation processes between university community members and external actors. Universities are privileged contexts for the experimentation of creative projects in social innovation if the focus is placed on fostering the interaction between internal and external actors, which can be significantly empowered by design practices. The specific objective of this paper is to describe a model for the SISU operation together with principles based on the design approach to social innovation. The recognition of the importance of the design in the promotion of social innovation has been particularly highlighted throug...
