To allow high spectral efficiency, different frequency channels are separated by the symbol rate, regardless of their bandwidth (which is much higher than the symbol rate for quasi-constant envelope OQPSK signals), and we consider a multi-channel frequency-domain receiver with ACI (Adjacent Channel Interference) suppression. Our performance results show that it is possible to have high spectral efficiency with quasi-constant envelope OQPSK signals. This technique is especially interesting for the uplink of future broadband wireless systems since we can employ low-cost, grossly nonlinear power amplifiers at the mobile terminals and almost all signal processing is shifted to the base station. 1

Groupware applications are increasingly representative in the Internet home applications market, however, the Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the network is still a limitation impairing their performance. Such applications have found, in multicast technology, an ally contributing for their efficient implementation and scalability. Additionally, considering QoS as a design goal at the application level becomes crucial for groupware development, enabling QoS productivity to applications. The applications' ability to adapt themselves dynamically according to the resources availability can be considered a quality factor.Tolerant real-time applications, such as video conferences, are in the frontline to benefit from QoS adaptation. However, not all include adaptive technology able to provide both end-system and network quality awareness. Adaptation, in these cases, can be achieved by introducing a multiplatform middleware layer responsible for tutoring the applications' resources (enabling adjudication or limitation) based on the available processing and networking capabilities. Congregating these technological contributions, an adaptive platform has been developed integrating public domain multicast tools, applied to a Web-based distance learning system. The system is user-centered (e-student), aiming at good pedagogical practices and proactive usability for multimedia and network resources. The services provided, including QoS adapted interactive multimedia multicast conferences (MMC), are fully integrated and transparent to end-users. QoS adaptation, when treated systematically in tolerant real-time applications, denotes advantages in group scalability and QoS sustainability in heterogeneous and unpredictable environments such as the Internet.

In the current paper we present an algorithm for motion artifact detection based on the analysis of the variations in the time and the period domain characteristics of the PPG signal. The extracted features are ranked using a normalized mutual information feature selection algorithm and the best features are used in a support vector machine classification model to distinguish between clean and corrupted sections of the PPG signal. The proposed method has been tested in healthy and cardiovascular diseased volunteers, considering 11 different motion artifact sources. The results achieved by the current algorithm (sensitivity-SE: 84.3%, specificity-SP: 91.5% and accuracy-ACC: 88.5%) show that the current methodology is able to identify both corrupted and clean PPG sections with high accuracy in both healthy (ACC: 87.5%) and cardiovascular diseases (ACC: 89.5%) context.

It can lead to severe consequences such as injuries, high rates of hospitalization and reduced quality of life, especially in elderly populations. Therefore, information about the syncope triggers and reflex mechanisms would be of a great value in the development of a cost-effective p-health system for the prediction of syncope episodes, by enhancing patients' quality of life and reducing the incidence of syncope related disorders/conditions. In the present paper we study the characterization of syncope reflex mechanisms and blood pressure changes from the analysis of several non-invasive modalities (ECG, ICG and PPG). Several parameters were extracted in order to characterize the chronotropic, inotropic and vascular tone changes. Thus, we evaluate the ability of parameters such as Heart Rate (HR), Pre-Ejection Period (PEP) and Left Ventricular Ejection Time (LVET) to characterize the physiological mechanisms behind the development of reflex syncope and their potential syncope prediction capability. The significant parameter changes (e.g. HR from 12.9% to-12.4%, PEP from 14.9% to-3.8% and LVET from-14.4% to 12.3%) found in the present work suggest the feasibility of these surrogates to characterize the blood pressure regulation mechanisms during impending syncope.

These systems are based on physical devices, such as protective barriers, equipment and systems aimed at preventing the occurrence and propagation of accidents, and on human aspects such as regulations and procedures. This paper analyzes the use of a variety of procedures by nuclear power plant control room operators. The methodology consisted of analyzing the work of control room operators during the normal operations, shutdown, and startup of a nuclear power plant, and in full scale simulator training. This survey revealed that routine noncompliance to procedures was considered normal according to the operating rationale, which is based on technical, organizational and cultural factors. These findings indicate that the competencies nuclear power plant operators must possess far exceed proper technical training and the ability to follow written instructions.

One of the major projects contained within this work involves characterization of a DNA binding p... more One of the major projects contained within this work involves characterization of a DNA binding protein encoded on pBtoxis within Bacillus thuringiensis. This protein, TubR, was shown via Western Blotting to directly regulate expression of a downstream gene, tubZ, which is related to the class of filaments known as tubulins. TubR's DNA binding properties were shown via gel electrophoresis mobility shift assays. Together, this TubZ and TubR are responsible for the efficient stability of pBtoxis in daughter cells and spores, but whether this is due to proper replication or segregation is unclear. xiv Within the Bacillus thuringiensis phage 0305phi8-36, gp207 has been classified as a distant actin relative. It is most closely related to MreB. By fusing this gene to GFP and expressing it within both Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis, it was shown via microscopy to form a static filament within the cell. This represents the first characterization of bacterial actin encoded by a bacteriophage and lays the groundwork for studies on the role of cytoskeletal proteins in the life cycle of bacteriophage.

Three models are considered: proportional model, additive model and a novel hybrid schema based on the upper time limit model. The characteristics, behaviour and viability of these models are analysed as regards traffic delay differentiation. The impact of each model on traffic aggregation and on individual flows is also evaluated. This study is complemented by the analysis of delay differentiation from an end-to-end perspective. An adaptive differentiation mechanism is also proposed and discussed.

We consider iterative frequency- domain receivers that jointly perform the equalization, multi-packet separation and channel decoding operations. Our receivers allow a high throughput provided that the number of mobile terminals that is trying to access a given slot is equal to or below the multi-packet detection
