Unfortunately, more research is needed for the definition of which type of content should be used in the design of these tools. One possibility is the use of emotional stimuli, which are known to enhance attentional processes. According to the Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, as people age, the emotional salience arises for positive and neutral, but not for negative stimuli. For this study we developed a cognitive-motor VR task involving attention and short-term memory, and we investigated the impact of using emotional images of varying valence. The task consisted of finding a target image, shown for only two seconds, among fourteen neutral distractors, and selecting it through arm movements. After performing the VR task, a recall task took place and the patients had to identify the target images among a valence-matched number of distractors. Ten stroke patients participated in a within-subjects experiment with three conditions based on the valence of the images: positive, negative and neutral. Eye movements were recorded during VR task performance with an eye tracking system. Our results show decreased attention for negative stimuli in the VR task performance when compared to neutral stimuli. The recall task shows significantly more wrongly identified images (false memories) for negative stimuli than for neutral. Regression and correlation analyses with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Geriatric Depression Scale revealed differential effects of cognitive function and depressive symptomatology in the encoding and recall of positive, negative and neutral images. Further, eye movement data shows reduced search patterns for wrongly selected stimuli containing emotional content. The results of this study suggest that it is feasible to use emotional content in a VR based cognitive-motor task for attention and memory training after stroke. Stroke survivors showed less attention towards negative information, exhibiting reduced visual search patterns and more false memories. We have also shown that the use of emotional stimuli in a VR task can provide additional information regarding patient's mood and cognitive status.

The two input devices are a webcam and a Leap Motion controller. Volcano Salvation is an immersive strategy game that contributes to the field of game design by offering players novel challenges that require coordinating complex head and hand orientations, which it achieves through the game's unique use of these two touchless input devices.

In this context, this paper proposes a multistage approach for dynamic truck dispatching in real open pit mine environments, implemented in the commercial package SmartMine®, marketed by Devex SA. The first stage of this approach defines the optimal number of trucks that maximises the tonnage production by means of a robust linear programming model, which considers the operational constraints of a real mining process. The second stage uses a dynamic dispatching heuristic joining computational simulation and multicriterion optimisation techniques for decision making for truck dispatching. Another relevant contribution of this work is the publication of realistic instances collected from a dispatching system managing an iron mine, containing information about the hauling and loading fleet, the equipment situation when the working shift starts, cycle times, the time ...

Experimental results illustrate the relative effectiveness of our algorithm on several different network topologies and size, in the presence or absence of noise, and networks of different radio range and/or number of anchors and/or noise factor.

In this paper, we propose a heuristic for the SLP. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm on four instances of Niewiadomska-Szynkiewicz and Marks (2009)

His mother was a 17-year-old primigesta. Birth weight was of 2860 g, and Apgar scores were 9/10/10. A duodenal perforation and multiple ileal atresias were visible at the operation theater, as well as several accessory spleens. As the conglomerate of atretic segments seemed swollen and extremely difficult to individualize, the surgeon of the time decided to perform a second procedure some days later. Duodenostomy and primary abdominal closure were performed as a first operation. According to the operatory report of our former colleague, "bowel loops were easily reintegrated without much pressure into the abdomen." The report does not offer full details about the technique for primary abdominal closure, but current inspection of the vertical skin scar suggests a direct approach of peritoneum, muscle, and skin in separate layers and probe-coated, transverse retention sutures. Parenteral nutrition was onset, and a second procedure was performed at 37 days for multiple anastomosis and resection of atretic, perforated segments. The remaining small intestine was about 70-cm long. The surgeon followed the scar line of the first operation by resecting its borders and reapproaching them in the same vertical fashion.

This can be normal and accidentally found during herniotomy or inflamed and present as acute scrotum, although the latter is less frequent. We present a case of a male infant with scrotal abscess resulting from Amyand’s hernia, with appendicitis and periappendicular abscess.

ABSTRACT The concept of a partially shared neural circuitry between action observation and action... more ABSTRACT The concept of a partially shared neural circuitry between action observation and action execution in healthy participants has been demonstrated through a number of studies. However, little research has been done in this regard utilizing eye movement metrics in rehabilitation contexts. In this study we approach action observation and action execution by combining a virtual environment and eye tracking technology. Participants consisted of stroke survivors, and were required to perform a simple reach- and-grab and place-and-release task with both their paretic and non-paretic arm. Results showed congruency in gaze metrics between action execution and action observation, for distribution and duration of gaze events. Furthermore, in action observation, longer smooth pursuit segments were detected when observing the representation of the paretic arm, thus providing evidence that the affected circuitry may be activated during observation of the simulated action. These results can lead to novel rehabilitation methods using virtual reality technology.

Twenty placentae were obtained after vaginal delivery (VAGG) and eleven after elective cesarean sections (CESG). Slides were prepared with chorionic villosities samples and labeled with anti-CD68 antibody, specific for macrophages. Labeled and nonlabeled cells were counted inside the villosities. Non-parametric statistical tests were used for the analysis. among the 6,424 cells counted in the villosities' stroma from the 31 placentae, 1,135 cells (17.6%) were stained by the CD68+. The mean of cells labeled by the anti-CD68 was 22+/-18 for the VAGG group and 20+/-16 for the CESG, in each placentary sample. there were no significant differences in the percentage of macrophages (CD68+) in association with labor.
