It is possible to define an atomic order 1, ..., n and solve the problem iteratively using an exact method, called Branch-and-Prune (BP). The main step of BP algorithm is to solve a quadratic system to get the two possible positions for i, i > 3, in terms of the positions of i−3, i−2, i−1 and the distances d i−1, i , d i−2, i , d i−3, i . Because of uncertainty in NMR data, some of the distances d i−3, i may not be precise and the main problem to apply BP is related to the difficulty of obtaining an analytical expression of the position of atom i in terms of the positions of the three previous ones and the corresponding distances. We present such expression and although it is similar to one already existing in the literature, based on polyspherical coordinates, a new proof is given, based on Clifford algebra, and we also explain how such expression can be useful in BP using a parameterization which depends on d i−3, i . The results suggest that a master equation might exist, what is generally not believed by many researchers.

The software industry has also followed the same trend, motivated by the globalization of services, facilitated by the Internet explosion, and a stronger presence of the emergent countries in software production, such as India. This has made the software-producing companies seek for mechanisms that guarantee the quality of all processes involved in the creation and maintenance of their products. The ISO (International Standardization Organization) 9000 Series Standards, and the CMM model (Capability Maturity Model) developed by SEI (Software Engineering Institute), offer reliable standards to achieve quality software products.

Control of the number of Ag nanoparticle seeds is found to provide a fast and effective route by which to manipulate the size and morphology of nanoparticles produced via a combined galvanic replacement and reduction reaction. A lower number of Ag nanoparticle seeds leads to larger nanodendrites with the particles' outer diameter being tunable in the range of 45 to 148 nm. The size and surface morphology of the nanodendrites was found to directly affect their catalytic activity. Specifically, we report on the activity of these AgAu nanodendrites in catalyzing the gas-phase oxidation of benzene, toluene and o-xylene (BTX), which is an important reaction for the removal of these toxic compounds from fuels and for environmental remediation. All nanodendrite particles produced were found to be catalytically active, even at low temperatures and low metal loa...

The AgAu tadpoles display nodular polycrystalline hollow heads, while their undulating tails are single crystals. The unusual morphology suggests an oriented attachment growth mechanism. Remarkably, a 1 nm thick Ag layer was found to segregate so as to cover the entire surface of the tadpoles. By varying the nature of the seeds (Au NPs), double-headed Au tadpoles could also be obtained. The effect of a number of reaction parameters on product morphology were explored, leading to new insights into the growth mechanisms and surface segregation behavior involved in the synthesis of bimetallic and anisotropic nanomaterials.

Establishing the genetic diversity and structure of populations is critical to define long-term strategies for cupuassu conservation presently threatened by rapid deforestation. Three natural populations collected at the putative center of diversity, three groups of accessions established at a germplasm collection, and one derived from commercial plantings were analyzed. The genetic diversity was assessed using 21 polymorphic microsatellite loci originally developed for Theobroma cacao, disclosing a total of 113 alleles. The estimated genetic diversity parameters averaged over cupuassu populations (A=3.53 alleles per locus; H e =0.426; H o =0.346) were lower than the values reported for other Neotropical tree species. The three natural populations presented a positive and significant fixation index (f), ranging from 0.133 to 0.234. Cupuassu apparently adhered to a general pattern of genetic diversity structure of some Neotropical tree species occurring at low densities, with a low intrapopulation genetic diversity and important levels of endogamy, possibly due to biparental inbreeding derived from the presence of spatial genetic structure in the populations. A high level of genetic divergence was detected among the natural populations (θ p =0.301), a strong differentiation caused by limited gene flow, and suggesting that human interference in spreading and/or stimulating plantings might have had a smaller effect than expected. The approximate location of the T. grandiflorum center of diversity could not be confirmed by analyzing natural populations from the putative region.

Forty-eight microsatellite loci developed for the congener Theobroma cacao were tested in cupuassu , and 29 (60.4%) produced robust alleles. The analyses of 216 cupuassu accessions using the 21 polymorphic microsatellite loci revealed a total of 113 alleles. The number of alleles per polymorphic locus ranged from two to 11, with an average of 5.38 alleles per locus. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.343, while the mean expected heterozygosity was 0.614. The successful transferability of T. cacao microsatellite primers to cupuassu was consistent with currently accepted phylogeny.

However, field tests such as the 6-min walk test (6MWT) and the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) are simple and effective in evaluating the same. Despite the increasing use of ISWT, no studies that used the test in patients with Chagas heart disease (CHD) were found and only few studies have evaluated the health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) in this population. The objective of this study was to correlate the distance walked in the ISWT with distance walked by 6MWT and peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) by CPET and HRQoL in patients with CHD. A total of 35 patients with CHD were evaluated according to the FC and HRQoL. The FC was assessed by CPET, 6MWT and ISWT. HRQoL was assessed by the generic short-form health survey (SF-36) and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Descriptive data were shown as mean and standard...

New AgAu tadpoles have been synthesized in a one-step reaction involving galvanic replacement between Ag nanospheres and AuCl4 (-) (aq.) in the presence of citrate. In their Full Paper on page 12314 ff., S. J. Haigh, P. H. C. Camargo and colleagues report how the tadpoles display nodular polycrystalline hollow heads while their undulating tails were single-crystalline, in agreement with an oriented attachment growth mechanism (top image). Remarkably, a 1 nm thick Ag layer (shown in red, bottom image) is found to segregate so as to cover the entire surface of the tadpoles (Au is shown in green).

The performance of the scheme is investigated for solving Burgers and Euler's equations. In particular, 1D shock tubes, 1D inviscid turbulence (Burgers equation) and 2D supersonic/transonic flows are simulated. The numerical results show good agreement with numerical and experimental data.

Research paper thumbnail of Assessment of Functional Capacity in Chagas Heart Disease by Incremental Shuttle Walk Test and its Relation to Quality-of-Life
