The wood cames from Mozambican Miombo Woodland. The following machining operations were performed: planing, shaping, milling, tearing and boring based on technical standard. The wood had a surface quality approval rating above 70% in all tested machining operations. A perfect surface quality was obtained with a feed speed of 6 m.min-1 in planing. Brachystegia spiciformis had easy workability and extremely well performance compared to Julbernadia globiflora. Nevertheless, both wood species have great potential for use in higher value-added products such as furniture and frame production.

Its special characteristics of rapid growth, short harvest cycle, diversity and excellent mechanical properties. The objective of this work was a physical-mechanical analysis of flooring manufactured by a combination of bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) laminate slats and wood (Pinus taeda) edge-glued panels (EGP). It was based on the ASTM D2394-83/1994 standard, which describes the procedures for mechanical simulation of in-service floors, such as indentation loads applied on small areas, falling ball impact, rolling load, abrasion and friction tests. The results were satisfactory when compared with those of other types of wood. The research showed lignocellulosic composite of Pine EGP with a bamboo surface, in terms of mechanical strength according the ASTM’s standard, is viable and feasible. Therefore, it results that “EGP/Bamboo” composite can be successfully applied for internal floors.

The variation in the radial direction is the most perceptible and important for wood uses. This research aimed at evaluating the influence of the wood radial sampling position in the charcoal quality of six Eucalyptus clones. For evaluating the experiment it was adopted the randomized design disposed in split plot, where clone represented the effect of the plot and radial position the effect of the split. The results indicated that the clone effect was significant for charcoal and fixed carbon yield, apparent relative density and fixed carbon content. The effect of radial position was significant for apparent relative density, volatile materials and fixed carbon content. The effect of clone x radial interaction position was significant for charcoal yield, volatile materials and fixed carbon content.

Falling steel sphere, static and dynamic friction, indentation caused by loads applied in small areas, rolling load, and abrasiveness impact tests were simulated. The results were subjected to analysis of variance and Tukey’s test at 5% significance, and Pearson’s correlation was performed between the basic density and the indexes of each flooring. The basic density of the wood flooring made from the evaluated species ranged from 0.735 to 0.958 g.cm-3. D. odorata, Handroanthus spp. and H. courbaril woods were classified as heavy, while those of A. Lecointei and B. Virgilioides as moderately heavy. It was possible to indicate D. odorata, Handroanthus spp., H. courbaril, and B....

Wood density was assessed in clonal tests represented by 150 Eucalyptus urophylla x grandis hybrids with 6-year-old growing under different conditions. The main difference among the sites was the slope of the terrain: the clonal tests were replicated at plan site (0° of inclination), at site with 20°, and 40° of inclination. In order to provide experimental data to perform this study, gravimetric (reference) method and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were combined for assessing the wood density in a large sampling of Eucalyptus wood. Hence, regression model based on NIR spectra was developed for estimating such wood traits from NIR spectra recorded at different radial and longitudinal positions along the height of the tree. This approach allows the examination of the patterns of spatial variation of wood densi...

Research paper thumbnail of Predicting moisture content from basic density and diameter during air drying of Eucalyptus and Corymbia logs

In air drying of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs for the production of charcoal... more In air drying of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs for the production of charcoal it is necessary to be able to predict when logs have reached the required moisture content of ≤ 35%. This study is aimed to produce models using basic density and diameter to predict the moisture content of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs after 30, 60 and 90 days drying. 1,2 m long logs were taken at three different heights from three C. citriodora trees and three trees each from two E. urophylla clones (VM4 and Mn463). The 27 debarked, end sealed logs were air dried under cover for 90 days during which the change in moisture content was monitored. The relationship between density and drying was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient and the models for predicting the moisture content based on the basic density and diameter were produced. The density and the drying showed a high correlation coefficient. The coefficient of determination of the models was above 0,89 with a standard error lower than 6%. The use of the density and diameter to estimate the wood moisture content simplifies the production of the models, which can be used for Eucalyptus and Corymbia genetic materials.
