Teleconferencing has been the choice technology for such courses, due to its quick evolution and falling prices, and to the increase in the capacity for data transmission in the telecommunications sector. In a teleconferencing class an environment is created in which both instructors and students, though physically and geographically distant, can communicate by means of sound and image in a common virtual time and place. By its own similarity/difference to the face-to-face class situation, the teleconferencing distance learning model casts light onto qualities and defects in the “bank” education currently offered in our universities. The goal in the present paper is to discuss how far a critique to that traditional kind of education is allowed by comparing it to the teleconferencing mode. It also aims at debating on the necessity for a more democratic didactics. In order to do so, this paper examines the functioning structure of the teleconferencing mode, as well as the perceptions and adaptation strategies adopted by professors and students in two Production Engineering Graduate courses currently being offered to two large Brazilian companies.
