It is an “Endangered” species and its natural history is poorly known. We studied the Cipo Cinclodes breeding biology at Serra do Breu, where we found six nests on rock outcrops in 2009 and 2012. At least one nest was reused in different years. Breeding season was from September (nest building) to January (dependent juveniles). Nests were shallow cups or beds placed in chambers at the end of earthen and/or rocky tunnels or crevices on rock outcrops. Clutch size was 2–3 eggs. It exhibited biparental care during all nest stages. We demonstrated that the nesting habits of Cipo Cinclodes agree with those reported for other species of the genus, although some details differ from what is known for the closely related species, the Long-tailed Cinclodes Cinclodes pabsti.

Available data about Cipo Canastero’s breeding biology are scarce, incomplete or inconsistent. All nests found to date were built in the plant Vellozia nivea. Based on 84 nests found from 2009 to 2017 in four sites at Serra do Cipó, we described in detail their nesting habits focusing on three groups of characters: nest architecture, composition, and placement. Also, we described nest building. Our major new findings on the nesting habits of A. luizae were: three nest layers distinguishable, inner lining covering the entire nest interior, tunnels and tubes are absent, and the nest sites are not restricted to V. nivea. We recorded a wide range of nest sites, from ground, grasses and rupicolous bromeliads to shrubs and trees, including at least 30 supporting-plant species. Nest supports varied among study sites. Nest building lasted 22 days (one nest) and was done by both members of the pair. Our data can be useful for species conservation and contribute to the knowledge of the natural history of the genus Asthenes.

The park lies in the southern Espinhaço range, a significant biogeographical barrier that separates the forest areas of the Atlantic Forest on its eastern slope and the savanna-like vegetation of the Cerrado to its western slope. Representative habitats include open grasslands, with patches of rocky outcrops and woodlands. We recorded 151 species between 2007 and 2010. Most species occurred in woodlands, with the minority in rocky outcrops, eleven species are of conservation concern, nineteen are endemic to the Atlantic Forest, three to Cerrado, and four to the southeastern Brazilian mountaintops, two of which are restricted to campos rupestres of the Espinhaço range. Our results corroborate that the campos rupestres of the Espinhaço range are not only associated with the Cerrado biome, but harbor species associated with both surrounding biomes (Cerrado and Atlantic Forest) and to t...

We describe two cases of well-documented congenital CHIKV infection in Salvador-Brazil, where CHIKV has been identified since 2014. The outbreak in the city led to the clinical CHIKV diagnoses of both pregnant women 2 days before delivery. Urine and blood samples from the mothers and newborns were collected and tested for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis for Zika, dengue, and CHIKV. Both neonates and mothers had positive urine and serum PCR results for CHIKV. The newborns had significant perinatal complications and were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The purpose of our case report is to show how severe congenital CHIKV infection can be and the importance to include CHIKV infection in the differential diagnosis of neonatal sepsis when mothers have clinical signs of the disease and live in an affected area.

It has been suggested that this species may be nomadic because of its rarity and low density. We tested this suggestion throughout observations of two banded individuals in a 'campos rupestres' site at Serra do Cipó, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We also described some aspects of its natural history, including a preliminary estimation of the home range size. Estimated home ranges of the pair were 15.02 and 16.56 ha using two different methods. Home range comprises mainly rocky outcrops, with low-height vegetation, used for foraging on small arthropods. The pair showed year-round residency and long-term site fidelity for at least 3.5 years, thus contradicting the nomadism hypothesis.

ABSTRACT The play behavior of a Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) chasing a flock of White-... more ABSTRACT The play behavior of a Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) chasing a flock of White-naped Jay (Cyanocorax cyanopogon). Play behavior in birds is difficult to recognize and interpret, and poor documented in Brazil. In this note, we describe an opportunistic record of play behavior for a Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) individual chasing a flock of White-naped Jay (Cyanocorax cyanopogon), in cerrado of southeastern Brazil. The Sharp-shinned Hawk individual performed silent and slow chase flights, without evidence of aggression. The jays intensively uttered many vocalization types, including imitative calls of Roadside Hawk (Rupornis magnirostris) and Collared Forest-Falcon (Micrastur semitorquatus), moving between perches. Despite the existence of other potential hypothesis for such observed behavior, like predation or defense, we rely on play behavior due the many features of the event, such as its repetitiveness and long duration, and the lack of investment in attack and speed and no success of the hawk. We hope this report can contribute to the awakening of field ornithologists for avian play behavior, encouraging the publication of new records.

It was recently found in Minas Gerais at Rio Preto State Park. Here, we present further records for Minas Gerais, in the highest part of Serra do Cipó National Park. In the new locality, Lesser Grass Finch occurs sympatrically with two closely related species, Wedge-tailed Grass Finch Emberizoides herbicola and Pale-throated Serra Finch Embernagra longicauda, but is restricted to marshy areas; it is the first record of all three species occurring together at the same locality. Serra do Cipó becomes the second locality for the species in Minas Gerais; both sites lie within the main Espinhaço range in central Minas Gerais. Isolated records of this species on the mountain-tops of south-east Brazil support a distributional pattern exhibited by other taxa found at mid or low elevations in southern Brazil and adjacent areas.
