Design/methodology/approach – First the author will explore the metaphorical concept of the house as a machine in two different contexts, the industrial age, and conversational age, discussing how each concept can generate variety in the built environment. Second, the author presents some examples of conversational customization in architecture along with the Woka, an ongoing research project that attempts to create a more conversational design process. Finally, the author will discuss the possibility of conversational customization in design as a possible solution to a more open and intersubjective process in design. Findings – The author finds that a possible way to reach a true paradigm shift in the process of production of architectural space is to use conversation as a design approach, from design to use, shifting the focus from the o...

It presents the design process of an experimental interactive object intended to meet the former discussion and test the limits and difficulties that might arise during the process. Such an object was developed by Lagear (UFMG), as a response to the exhibition Homo Faber: Digital Fabrication in Latin America, CAAD FUTURES 2015.

It first introduces the physical and social context of the rehabilitation of the city, in which the cascade, called Ituita, was proposed. Different to the ephemeral character of most urban interactive installations, Ituita intends to become a permanent reference for the citizens, being as much as a playful interface for interaction as a place for raising and putting in evidence issues related to the city. This paper, thus, presents the three different levels of interaction—reactive, pro-active and dialogical—proposed in the interface designed for Ituita. Then, it discusses the possible urban benefit of such a proposal and concludes with assessments of both technological and social slant.

Supported in these reflections, the electronic book produced differentiates itself, in the way and the manner it was produced in relation to what has been presented on the Internet.

Woka was developed as a dialogical design process that empowers self-builders to act in a more autonomous way, expanding the traditional role of design practice and the way buildings are created. The advent and popularization of new design and fabrication processes have encouraged a flux of new theories and project strategies based on computing, each with its promise of changing the architectural practice. Some of these resulted in intellectually seductive; visually provocative and complex shaped architectures, generating a new formal repertoire, but doesn’t indicate a paradigm shift in the process of production of architectural space, still based on authorship. Woka challenges this traditional process proposing dialogue as a design approach, shifting the focus from the object to intersubjectivity, amplifying the poten...

The article is written by the two professors of the course, who drafted and conducted the proposal with a group of 14 students, along with a researcher who participated in the critical analysis of the course and the students’ work.
