This work is about the architectural Protomodernism in the town of Pelotas-Brazil, more precisely... more This work is about the architectural Protomodernism in the town of Pelotas-Brazil, more precisely, of a sample of buildings designed and constructed within a period between the decades of the thirties and the fourthies of the Twentieth Century; between the Historic Ecletism and the brazilian Modernism, close to the International Style. The term Protomodernism (a regionalism) is often apllied to those buildings, influenced mainly by the Art Déco. Accordingly to previous surveys, traces of Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and De Stjil can also be sensed by an educated eye in the whole historical center of the town. Protomodernist buildings are numerous and lack conservation, too. The present research links three main issues which may contribute with proposal of criteria for proper preservation: 1 – reinvention of the aesthetic value of the Protomodernist architecture; 2 – interpretation (reconstruction of the sense) of stylistics in the architectural practice in that period; 3 – effec...

Central areas were surveyed by some means and techniques of registration specially oriented to produce evidence of aspects and traits of potential patrimonial value. The main steps of the methodology are: 1) Search for morphological traits which depend on what is to observe especially on urban facades. Each profile of the blocks of a street is scanned in order to reveal the stylistics traits that are necessary to attribute to the building-type the property of “traditional” or “non-traditional” type. 2) Typological classification. Historical aspects of the Region, cultural habits and ancient forms and techniques of building were examined. 3) Analysis under the possible “loss-of-character degree” (loss of stylistic traits, too) of the buildings. 4) Attribution of a preservation priority (varying from one to three). Once the basis for preservation guidelines for patrimonial areas must be formulated on definite criteria, these procedures can background the elaboration of inventories of patrimonial goods (edifices, or other objects in urban spaces). Therefore, proposals of preservation guidelines for whole sites may be supported by this research methodology.
Key Words: Urban patrimony; theory, history and critics of art and architecture; urban morphology; typological analysis.
