A 24-year-old woman complained of an asymptomatic volumetric increase of the right maxillary region. Examinations revealed a tumor in the region of teeth 13 to 16, covered by a healthy mucosa, without phlogistic signs, not displaced, and teeth 53 and 54 with root resorption. Imaging examinations evidenced an area of mixed density delimited by a thin hypodense halo, with new bone formation at its upper limits, measuring 18.13 mm extension LL, 15.9 mm AP. An incisional biopsy confirmed ossifying fibroma. A histopathological analysis suggested the juvenile variant, psammomatoid. It was treated with mass removal in the region of teeth 11 to 16, under general anesthesia. Subsequently, the region was reconstructed with a tricortical graft of the iliac crest. After 8 months, with no signs of recurrence of the lesions, implant installation preparations were made.

The present study proposed histopathological criteria for the differential diagnosis between those pathological entities. Histological sections of lesions histopathologically diagnosed as Oral Fibroma (n=61) and Inflammatory Hyperplasia (n=75) and were submitted to different techniques (Hematoxylin-Eosin; Masson Trichrome and Phosphomolybdic acid - Picrosirius red) to allow quantitative and qualitative analysis. The qualitative analysis of collagen density was based on sections stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin and focused in the center and periphery of each lesion. Wound and collagen fibers were more frequent and higher in Oral Fibroma, while parallel fibers were more frequent in Inflammatory Hyperplasia (Fisher’s exact test, p

A semi-quantitative analysis of the amount of positive tumor cells was performed by two blind and calibrated observers (Kappa>0.75). The statistical Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to evaluate the data. The correlation between variables was investigated by the Spearman test, and the significance level set at p<0.05. We observed higher expression of Bmi-1 in tumors located in the palate (p<0.0001). In addition, poorly differentiated tumors had a greater amount of Bmi-1 positive cells (p=0.0011). Regarding the other correlations between variables, no significant as...

We reviewed, in a retrospective study, cases diagnosed as OKCs on histopathologic examination at the oral pathology department between 1991 and 2013. Fragmentation data were obtained from the records of the oral surgical department. Fragmentation of the capsules of OKCs during surgery did not affect recurrence, irrespective of the chosen treatment modality. The addition of techniques such as cryotherapy lowered the risk of recurrence of OKCs (P = .013) compared with after enucleation alone. Furthermore, patients with associated nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome had a greater recurrence rate than that of those with no associated syndrome (P = .033). Fragmentation of the cystic capsule does not play an important role in the rate of OKC recurrence. The rate of recurrence can be modified by using add...

Faced with this situation, the diagnosis hypothesis was pemphigus vulgaris. The patient was sent to the dermatologist who confirmed the hypothesis by clinical examination and direct immunofluorescence. The patient was hospitalized with profound anemia and was submitted to a new treatment for pemphigus vulgaris. Despite the improvement of mucosal lesions, other multiple lesions in the scalp, abdomen, chest and breasts were observed. Currently, the patient is waiting to undergo routine dental treatment.

The aim of this paper is report a total resolution of oral manifestation of PBL without any oncological treatment; this process is extremely rare and we discuss the mechanism which can occur. We present a case of PBL in left maxilla and oral mucosa in a woman HIV-positive patient. After an incisional biopsy an unusual outcome of spontaneous regression of the disease occurred, we reported the diagnostic process, the management and the Case Study

We describe two clinical cases with histopathological diagnoses of ameloblastomas who did not show clinical or radiographic signs of disease before microscopic examination.

The purpose of this study was to analyze p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression in 4 different odontogenic lesions. expression of p53 and PCNA was analyzed in radicular and dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) using monoclonal antibodies for detection of p53 and PCNA. PCNA expression was significantly greater in the basal layer of radicular cysts and in the suprabasal layer of odontogenic keratocysts; the percentage of p53 positive cells was significantly greater in the suprabasal layer of odontogenic keratocysts. The patterns of p53 and PCNA expression in dentigerous and radicular cysts were similar although the two lesions are of different origin. In odontogenic keratocysts and Gorlin cysts, results indicate a different pattern of tumor growth.

Reductions in the amount of saliva are known to increase the risk of oral diseases. This study investigated the factors associated to salivary flow alterations and its relationship with age, burning mouth syndrome, psychiatric and sleep disorders, systemic diseases and chronic drug use. METHODS: A total of 30 patients complaining of dry mouth without unbalanced systemic diseases were included. Questionnaires regarding socio-demographic data, xerostomia, burning mouth, depression and anxiety symptoms, and sleep disturbances were applied. Measures of salivary flow rates were obtained using spit method. Correlation of hyposalivation and quantitative data was determined using a multivariate regression model. RESULTS: The age range was 31-83 years, hyposalivation was correlated positively with sleep disorder (β=0.079, 95% CI, 0.033 to 0,124) and negatively with burning mouth (β=-0.043, 95% CI,-0.083 to-0.002). CONCLUSION: These results provide evidences regarding the association between reduced salivary flow and burning mouth, sleep disorders and chronic use of psychotropic medicines, and Factors associated to salivary flow alterations in dry mouth female patients* Fatores associados a alterações no fluxo salivar em pacientes com xerostomia
