For specific delimation, the tergal modification in the abdomen, the genital plates and their respective structures were analyzed. A key for males including all species of Poeciloderrhis is also given.

Wings of the fully winged species have many-branched veins and reach beyond the apex of the abdomen. Some species are smaller and green in color. These cockroaches are more than 40mm long; species have front femora with 1 to 3 spines on the ventroposterior margin and 1 at the tip; and lack arolia. The females of Blaberidae possess a brood sac, wherein the ootheca or loose eggs are retained until the eggs hatch (ovoviviparity). The phylogeny of roach families was explored by McKittrick (1964), Grandcolas (1994, 1996), Kambhampati (1996) and Klass (1997, 1998, 2001) (Grimaldi & Engel, 2004). We update knowledge of five species of Blaberidae from Brazil, based on a literature review and examination of the Blattaria collection in the Department of Entomology at the Museu Nacional of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (MNRJ).

The family also contains small to medium-sized species colored green. Tribonium Saussure is placed in Zeborinae, one of the 10 subfamilies within Blaberidae (Roth 2003). Tribonium is essentially Neotropical, with species presenting a general brown coloration brown with dispersed black spots mainly on the tegmina. These similarities make species identifications difficult and further morphological studies of the genitalia are needed. Tribonium has a geographical distribution from French Guiana and Colombia to Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina. The collection records are from tropical and subtropical forest, Atlantic forest, and regions of the Rio Grande do Sul. Currently, ten species are known, of which eight are Brazilian: T. conspersum (Guérin & Percheron), T. conspurcatum (Burmeister), T...

The genus was described in a key for the American Epilampra, which left only Asian-Australian species in the genus. Roth (1970) was the first to separate Poeciloderrhis from Epilampra with strong morphological characters. In this contribution, three species of Poeciloderrhis are described and a new record from Minas Gerais State is added. The genitalia of the female of Poeciloderrhis ferruginea are described for the first time. The genital plates were removed after dissection of the posterior part of the abdomen of males and females, using traditional dissection techniques. The parts were dissected on slides containing glycerin for examination under the stereoscopic microscope. Habitus images, and images of the pronotum, head and genitals were obtained with the help of a camera coupled to a stereomicroscope. The studied material is stored in glycerin inside mic...
