In Brazil it is considered an endangered species because of natural habitat destruction and illegal hunting. In reptiles, the thyroid gland plays an integral part in ecdysis, reproduction, tail regeneration, growth, endocrine function and metabolism rate. The aim of the present study was to characterize the thyroid gland morphology of C. latirostris, based on histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques. The thyroid glands were fixed in Bouin's fluid and serial cross sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin, Mallory’s trichrome, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Alcian blue (AB pH 1.5 and 2.5). The immunohistochemical technique for 5-HT-IR cells was used. The thyroid gland has a dense irregular connective tissue forms a capsule enveloping the gland. There are several follicular acini of varying size lined by simple cuboidal or columnar epithelium in the thyroid gland. The follicles are connected by interfollicular connective tissue which contains blood vessels. We observed the presence of lymph nodes around the entire gland. There was a positive PAS reaction and negative AB reaction in the colloid. 5-HT-IR cells were detected around the follicle cells. No striking morphological differences were observed between C. latirostris and other domesticated mammals.

As exclusion criterion, were not analyzed bones of children or damaged. For the quantitative analysis of the data, the software Graphad Instat was used. Fisher exact test was used considering the p≤ 0,05 as significant. After analysis of the scapulae, 30,76% (68/ 221) presented the ossified STSL (p≤ 0,0001) of which, 52,94% (36/68) were ossified on the right side and 47,05% (32/68) on the left one. The 153 scapulae that did not present the ossified STSL, it was observed in 19,6 % (30/153) of these bones, the superior edge varying in the transverse plan, increasing superior angulation and, modified the width and depth of the scapular incisure. This anatomical curiosity should be kept in mind by clinicians that approaches painful syndrome of the shoulder, as well as, this anatomical curiosity should be kept in mind by students that may manipulate this anatomical area.

Megaureter, ureterocele, and H shaped ureter are diseases that involve this particular structure. Furthermore, these pathologies are often associated with other conditions, such as horse shoe kidney and ectopic kidney. Bifid ureter is one of the malformations of the kidney collecting system-the minor and major calyces. It can be complete, when the division is total and the supernumerary ureter joins the bladder through another orifice, or incomplete, where the ureters merge together. The incidence of this condition is 0.8% in the overall population, although it is more common in women. It is also more commonly found as a unilateral condition. We report a case of bilateral bifid ureter on a male cadaver, discussing the many forms of variation and their clinical significance.
The respiratory system of the turtle is formed by specific organs that convey air from environmen... more The respiratory system of the turtle is formed by specific organs that convey air from environment to small air sacs used for gas exchange called alveoli. In Podocnemis expansa, the trachea bifurcates into two primary extrapulmonary bronchi that, at the hilum, enters each lung of a spongy appearance, and are located just beneath the carapace. Four tissue layer structure the trachea: mucosa, submucosa, cartilage and serosa. The mucosa is lined by typical respiratory epithelium, resting on lamina propria of loose connective tissue. Just beneath, the submucosa is poorly developed and continuous to the perichondrium of the hyaline cartilage piece. The serosa is constituted by connective tissue with elastic fibers. The intrapulmonary bronchus exhibits similar trachea morphology but the cartilage pieces are fragmented. Inside the lung, projections depart from the pulmonary wall and project into the lumen, forming cup-like chambers named alveoli. Considering the projection size and the type of the lining epithelium, they are classified as primary, secondary and tertiary trabeculae. Two types of pneumocytes lined the lateral surface of trabeculae: lining pneumocyte type I and pneumocyte type II, which is also responsible for surfactant production. The trabeculae is supported by loose connective tissue rich in blood vessels, containing collagenous fibers, scarce elastic fibers as well as smooth muscles cells. The morphological analysis revealed that the trachea and the lung of Brazilian Amazon turtle possess similarities with other chelonian species with phylogenetic proximity.

However, the sperm motility decreased by 19% (p¼0.012) and viability by 46% (p¼0.0002) in the adult group of immediate effects analysis. The sperm viability decreased by 24% (p¼0.0049) in the adult group of late effects analysis. Seminiferous tubule diameter of the prepubertal and adult groups of immediate analysis showed a reduction of 4% (p¼0.0254) and 6% (p¼0.013), respectively. In the prepubertal group of late effects analysis, the density of tubular and intertubular compartments showed a decrease of 2% (p¼0.0027) and increase of 18% (p¼0.0027), respectively. Conclusion: Chronic stress caused morphological changes in testicles during prepubertal and adult age, nevertheless, spermatozoid alterations were observed only when it occurred during the adulthood. Hence, alterations promoted by chronic stress stimuli are more important in adult rats than in prepubertal animals. Source of Funding: Capes, CNPq and Faperj.

The aim of this study was explored the duplicity of renal artery in a specimen of Cerdocyon thous, focusing on the possibilities of clinical-surgical implication of this anatomical variation. Materials and methods. Were dissected 32 specimens of Cerdocyon thous, obtained from the collections of the Laboratório de Ensino e Pesquisa em Morfologia dos Animais Domésticos e Selvagens do Departamento de Anatomia Animal e Humana, da Universidade Federal Rural do Rio
de Janeiro e Laboratório de Anatomia Animal da Universidade Federal do Pampa. Results. Were observed a numerical variation in the left renal artery in an adult female cadaver. The left kidney had two renal arteries, one cranial and another caudal. The first renal artery of the left kidney, measuring 2.25 cm in length, originated laterally from the abdominal aorta at the level of the third lumbar
vertebra. Moreover, it emanated two pre-hilar branches, one dorsal and one ventral, with the ventral branch supplying also to the adrenal gland. The second renal artery also originated laterally from the abdominal aorta at the level of the third lumbar vertebra and measured 2.36 cm in length. It also emitted two pre-hilar branches, one cranial and another caudal, which emitted the ureteral branch. Conclusions. Numerical variations of the renal arteries should be considered in the execution of surgical, radiological and experimental procedures in order to avoid mistakes made due to lack of knowledge of the possibility these variations both in domestic and wild animals.
