The teaching area of English for Specific Purposes has consolidated itself as a teaching approach... more The teaching area of English for Specific Purposes has consolidated itself as a teaching approach focused and oriented to attend specific learners' needs interested in developing competences that help them to participate in occupational and/or academic contexts meaningfully. One of its branches, English for Academic Purposes, can be considered a current tendency in language teaching due to its aim at focusing on specific communicative needs of members that participate in the academic contexts either conducting research and publishing results or interacting with foreign researchers through the target language. The internalization process of Brazilian universities, the role of English as the language of science and English teaching programs at universities (such as Language without Borders) has intensified the proposal of courses for specific purposes, especially for academic purposes, which categorizes itself as a current tendency in English teaching contexts.
Programas de internacionalizacao das ciencias por meio de intercâmbio de alunos em contexto acade... more Programas de internacionalizacao das ciencias por meio de intercâmbio de alunos em contexto academico tem se intensificado em nosso pais e tornaram-se realidade durante a graduacao de alunos brasileiros. Considerando esse panorama, este trabalho tem como objetivo discutir necessidades linguisticas e pragmaticas apontadas por alunos de uma universidade publica do Estado de Sao Paulo, participantes de programas de intercâmbio (por meio do programa Ciencia sem Fronteiras), especialmente nos Estados Unidos, Canada e Inglaterra, para que se possa pensar em pressupostos ao se planejar cursos e materiais didaticos que considerem necessidades e desafios linguisticos previsiveis para universitarios brasileiros candidatos a intercâmbio em paises de lingua inglesa. Para alcancar tal objetivo, temos como base teorias relacionadas a analise de necessidade (DUDLEY-EVANS E ST JOHN, 2010), questoes pragmaticas (ANDRADE, 2013) e culturais (HINKEL, 2012). his paper discusses how teaching material design can contribute to educate efl teachers to consid... more his paper discusses how teaching material design can contribute to educate efl teachers to consider their prospective students' proiles. his professional activity requires the student teachers to take a set of decisions, make choices and explain the reasons for them. he described practices in teacher education are carried out at a public university in the southeast of Brazil, and larsen-freeman's (1983) assertion that teaching is about making choices, which should be informed, is closely considered. he author describes three diferent contexts of practice and presents student teacher considerations about the experiences. here are challenges and gains in the process of teaching/learning how to design elT materials, but as has been pointed out by the participants involved in this practice the gains are worth the challenges.

O objetivo deste trabalho e analisar o papel designado a gramatica em um material didatico de lin... more O objetivo deste trabalho e analisar o papel designado a gramatica em um material didatico de lingua inglesa destinado a alunos do nivel avancado. Pretendemos tracar a proposta apresentada pelo livro ao passo em que avaliaremos quatro atividades nas quais a gramatica e utilizada, verificando essas atividades a luz da teoria que postula o ensino de gramatica como como habilidade (Batstone, 1994 e Larsen-Freeman, 2003).

This paper presents a discussion of how a micro structural genre analysis combined with focused ... more This paper presents a discussion of how a micro structural genre analysis combined with focused attention to language choices can be productively combined in pedagogical activities aiming at teaching EFL writing to prospective EFL teachers. Besides favorable results, it points out important variables to be considered in future research.
