In-laws are also included in the definition of incest. The definition of exogamy refers to the practice of marriage outside one's own group. An example would be to marry someone that is not a primary or secondary relative. There is also cultural exogamy, which refers to marrying someone of a different race, such as Caucasian marrying an Aboriginal, or a Japanese marrying a Chinese, or an Italian marrying a German. b). Why is the understanding of these terms and rules crucial to the understanding of family structure and kinship organization? According to Janeway (1981) the understanding of these terms and rules are crucial to the understanding of family structure and kinship organization because incest is considered to be "a violation of morality or a religious code" and is the cause of low self-

The theories, I believe, that could be applicable to these criminal acts is the hedonistic and material-gain seeker typologies. Hedonistic in that the accused strives for pleasure and thrill seeking. The accused is also a material-gain seeker in the sense that she seeks money and material rewards.

When someone says that word, the first images that come to mind consist of a mother, father, and siblings. However, this is not always the case. For example, what if it was one of the parents that were being asked, "how's the family?" The images could be quit different, yet similar. The meaning of 'family' within the Euro-Canadian and American culture is defined as a father, mother, and children. The term 'family' within this context also implies the role that each family member plays. Yet, if one asks the same question to a member of the Ma'anyan or Nayar culture, the definition of 'family' takes on a whole different meaning.

According to Vanier Institute (2004), some evidence of double burden is shown mostly in marriages where the mother works outside the home for pay, and then tackles housework, laundry, cooking, and childcare (p. 71). The housework is also referred to as domestic labour and is unpaid. The hours in domestic labour is twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, whereas paid labour outside the home averages about eight hours a day, five days a week. To understand the effects of the social situation of women, the study of the concept of the double burden is a good start. It is a good start, as it shows the unfairness that women who are mothers seem to have a double duty. The first, in the realm of paid employment, where they work at least an eight hour shift, then come home and become the homemaker, doing unpaid, domestic labour. Some might ask, "why is it important to have an understanding of this concept?" I would argue that to come up with a workable solution to make the situation fair and equitable, it is important, first, to study the concept of the double burden, and how it developed and evolved.

For example one could refer to their family as mom, dad, brothers, and or sisters. Yet, for another, their family make-up could consist of a dad, step-mom, brothers, and, or stepbrothers, sisters, and, or step-sisters. And for another, their mom (or dad) and siblings, if any (Baker, 2005, pp. 4-6). And for another, their family could be either two moms, or two dads. And yet, for another, their family could consist of either adopted parents or foster parents. These descriptions are typical of both Euro-Canadian as well as French-Canadian families. Yet speaking to an Aboriginal Canadian, East Indian Canadian, or even a Chinese Canadian, 'family' as whole different meaning. For example, an Aboriginal Canadian family doesn't just consist of the mother, father, brothers, and, or sisters. The whole community is considered to be members of the family, and all have a part in raising the children, including aunts, uncles, and other relatives. Elders, are extremely important in raising the young children in the community. The philosophy surrounding the Aboriginal family pattern is that children are the future, and what they learn about their culture and history, they pass on to the next generation. The purpose of this is to keep their culture, and history alive (Hanlon, UFV Soc 331 Online Discussion, Winter, 2010).
