Herwig Bruneel

Herwig Bruneel was born in Zottegem, Belgium, in 1954. He received the master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, the master’s degree in Computer Engineering, and the PhD degree in Computer Engineering in 1978, 1979 and 1984 respectively, all from Ghent University, Belgium. He is a full Professor in the TELIN (Telecommunications and Information Processing) Department and founding director of the SMACS (Stochastic Modeling and Analysis of Communication Systems) Research Group at the same university. His main personal research interests are in the area of stochastic modeling and (discrete-time) queueing theory. He has published more than 600 papers on these subjects and is coauthor of the book H. Bruneel and B. G. Kim, “Discrete-Time Models for Communication Systems Including ATM” (Kluwer Academic Publishers, Boston, 1993). Since 2009, he holds a career-long Methusalem research grant from the Flemish Government at Ghent University, specifically on Stochastic Modeling and Analysis of Communication Systems. From 1999 to 2018 he was the head of the TELIN Department. He was also a member of the Research Council of Ghent University for over 15 years. From October 2001 to September 2003, he served as the Academic Director for Research Affairs at Ghent University. From October 2012 to September 2019, he was a member of the Board of Governors of Ghent University since 2012. He reached emeritus status October 1st, 2019.
