The simple theory of income choice, which focuses on decision confronted by individuals to start-up firm and become self-employed or entrepreneur has been the basis for a range of studies. This theory affirms that high rate of unemployment will lead to an increase in business activities been start up by individuals who are not employed because the opportunity cost of not starting a venture has reduced On the other end, the unemployed do not have a stable mind to come out with innovative ideas and also tend to possess lower endowments of human capital and entrepreneurial talent or skills required to start and sustain a new venture. There is also an argument about whether entrepreneurial activities can help reduced unemployment or not.
This thesis aims to contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by seeking the relationship between the two conflicting concepts; entrepreneurship and unemployment.
This thesis reviewed the relationship between entrepreneurship rate and unemployment rate using exploratory research. Using primary data from Ghanaian students in Beijing it attempts to know the students opinion about the lack of precision existing between the two concepts. Furthermore a case studies about China’s employment policy to find out whether Chinese Government recognizes entrepreneurial activities to help reduce employment in China.
However, it was assumed that increase in entrepreneurship activities reduced unemployment, at the same time, high rate of unemployment lead to slowdown or decrease in entrepreneurial activity in Ghana. Using available literature and the research including case study about Chinese policy to solve unemployment, the thesis tried to justify this notion and reconciled the two conflicting concepts, for policy-makers and researchers as well.
