Now also integrated into the PPE Programme, where we consider Scotus' arguments [predating events in Florence & Venice] about debt, buying and selling money, the question of what a debt is, and questions about restitution and justice.

These films explore the concept of the virtual, of continuity in time, of intensity, and of memory. At the same time we examine the writings of the first major philosopher of the virtual, Henri Bergson. By studying the films, and short passages of Bergson’s otherwise difficult texts, and debating them in close detail, we come to understand the meaning and the immense ramifications of the Virtual in our world, and the all-consuming pervasiveness of it in our lives. We also come to understand why film itself and Bergson’s philosophy (especially of duration) are inseparably related.

Kenneth White is one of many modern and postmodern Scottish artists and intellectuals who were substantially influenced by Continental thought, even if White's self-conscious Pelagianism marks him out from the conservatism of the mainstream Scottish Pauline-Augustinian tradition. Therefore, aspects of Nietzsche, Deleuze and Prigogine are salient features of his poetry and prose, as well as connections to Buddhism. On a normative level, accepting White's cultural critique entails a "geopoetic" retrieval and reconfiguration of Scotland's historically European cultural heritage and resources, and resistance to the homogenising and nihilistic forces of angloamerican neoliberal culture. This cosmological-ethical imperative extends from Scotland and Europe to the world.
