It focuses on the application of a computer-assisted linguistic procedures, which aims to classify and quantify formal characteristics (e.g., morphology, semantics etc.) of recorded texts. These systems analyze vast amounts of content data and it also facilitates the comparison of the results with other data, e.g., with information about the communicators, such as their personality characteristics (personality traits, motivation etc.). These methods are employed within the CPACT research (Computational Psycholinguistic Analysis of Czech Text), which is carried out from 2016 at the University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic (EU), and which aims to enrich the current state of knowledge of the psycholinguistic analysis of texts and using advanced procedures for the Czech language processing. The paper describes relevant aspects of its methodology, the theory and the quantitative analysis specifics.

Journal of Quantitative Linguistics, Jun 12, 2018

The West Slavic languages are close enough for their speakers to use their mother tongues when co... more The West Slavic languages are close enough for their speakers to use their mother tongues when communicating with each other. In 1966, Einar Haugen referred to this type of communication as ‘semicommunication’. To this date, research into the mutual intelligibility of the semicommunication of West Slavic languages has been conducted exclusively by sociolinguistic methods. The presented paper, therefore, uses the mathematical-linguistic methods proposed by Moberg, Gooskens, Nerbonne, and Vaillette [Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands 2006: Selected papers from the 17th CLIN Meeting, p. 51–66 (2007)] to measure the mutual intelligibility of semicommunication. These methods are based on calculating the conditional entropy. The calculations are realized on the phonetic and graphemic planes of Czech, Slovak, and Polish. Conditional entropies were the lowest between Czech and Slovak. Between both the languages and Polish they were much higher. The asymmetry of the mutual intelligibility was confirmed for every studied relationship. Its extent was varied for each. The differences between content and function words, and various styles of material were also explored. The measurements in this research proved, in agreement with Moberg et al., that conditional entropy correlates with mutual intelligibility. The general conclusions mostly confirm the sociolinguistic conclusions. In many cases, the conclusions have been refined and supplemented.

ABSTRACT Neither the knowledge type tested (semantic or procedural knowledge) nor students&#3... more ABSTRACT Neither the knowledge type tested (semantic or procedural knowledge) nor students' preference for learning semantic or procedural knowledge has any major impact on the results of mathematic knowledge tests. The student's relation to the subject is of more importance. These results were obtained from analysing tests in Discrete Mathematics in terms of the type of task and the student cognitive style (N= 151). Psychological memory theory (Cirino, Morris, Morris, 2007) is the theoretical basis for task typology whereas the cognitive style theory applied to teaching mathematics (Rittle-Johnson, Star, 2007) is the theoretical basis for student typology. The analysis was carried out under real learning conditions that make students concerned with test results. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Secondary schools, with regard to their specialization, should determine what levels they want to achieve, and adapt teaching geometry to that goal. Our research also shows that Van Hiele levels are equally suitable for both genders.

It focuses on the connection between cognitive dispositions (IQ) and information behavior of preliterate children. The results show that pre-school children are able to extract information on subjects which are interesting for them from all available sources -ranging from traditional media such as books or magazines, modern digital media (computer, DVD) to natural conditions in which children live (city, nature). Surprisingly, the radio is used very rarely. If we compare subjective replies supported by the method of graphic scaling, we can see that gifted preschoolers obtain statistically significantly smaller share of information from TV or computer. It is also true that gifted children gain information on subjects interesting for them from a wider range of various media sources, they do not stick only to one of them (they do not sit "only" in front of a TV or a computer).

The family as a topic is an essential part of primary school curriculum in the Czech Republic. Th... more The family as a topic is an essential part of primary school curriculum in the Czech Republic. The present study describes the expressions used by teachers (N=219) to define the term family and the possible implicit theories behind the definitions. A total of 513 expressions were used by the respondents to define family, the ten most frequent ones being: člověk, ten, dítě, skupina, spolu, žít, blízký, rodič, my a rád (man/human being, this, child, group, together, live, close, parent, we and like). The initial analysis suggests that the teachers' implicit understanding of the concept of family is associated with 1) parenthood and blood kinship, 2) emotional relations (love each other), 3) the co-existence in the household. The teachers' implicit understanding is based on egocentric and pedocentric view (the family equals mainly me-child and my parents or me-parent and my children). The lexical trace makes it evident that the implicit understanding is deeply embodied in language (the expressions that occur to us are commonly used ones, which restricts the final concept) and that it reflects the changing socio-cultural discourse (for example, the modern concept of family is typically nuclear, based on partnership, which is a result of the postponement of parenthood, other phenomena include emancipation, economic independence, independent housing with variable individualized features, such as pets as a part of family structure). Czech teachers do not use in their definitions concepts like education, nation, culture or religion which sometimes appear in theoretical academic concepts of family.

The aim of the research was to find out how parents evaluate the cooperation between them and a school and how they see their children are prepared for the further studies. Method: non-standardized questionnaire, research sample: (N=176) the parents of children aged 10 to 15 years, parents age from 30 to 57. Partial results show that mothers feel to be more informed then fathers and mothers are more aware of the child's satisfaction in school. Furthermore, it has been proved that even older the child is, even worse evaluation the parents give to the level of its education. Parents of girls are significantly more persuaded that school prepares them better for further studies. The worse assessment children have, the lower parental satisfaction with the education is and these parents also think that their child is not properly prepared for future studies. Thereafter are commented in the paper expectations of parents and their requirements toward the school.

Three techniques were utilized during the research on the sample of 41 university students using the "blind" experimental setting. The setting includes presentation of emotional stimuli for sadness induction (emotional film clips), manipulative strategy for anger induction (interaction with human confederate) and real-life situation for induction of fear (examination situation). The paper also briefly presents the research EH (Emotionality in Handwriting, the Institute of Psychology of Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, 2010) which is a follow-up to a study focused on the effects of a given emotional state on formal parameters of handwriting (on metric characteristics of handwriting). Apart from general commentary on induction methods, the design of the EH experiment is described, including description of each mood induction procedure method, course of the experimental setting and summary of results obtained from participants by self-description scales. The research results are also significant in that the emotional changes studied may provide vital information on behavioural and personality characteristics. This subject has been for a long time more or less neglected by current research tendencies. The article also provides a commentary on possibilities of development of the method within psychological disciplines.

The van Hiele theory describes how young people learn geometry. It postulates five levels of geometric thinking. Usiskin later tested the ability of the van Hiele theory to describe and predict the performance of students in secondary school geometry. Our pilot study aimed to verify the test structure of the Usiskin´s test in the Czech secondary schools, and to compare the outcomes with American results.

The aim of this contribution is to document inventory descriptors which are used by teachers for description and explanation of this term. he research was participated by teachers from practice of studying a combined study of pre-primary and primary education (N=45, age: from 20 to 52). There were identified 31 categories used for a description and family evaluation. Individuals have reported an average of 4.95, at least 1 and not more than 9 different categories. The frequency shows that the "hidden" categories are: hetero/homosexual, city/village and Czech/minority. Within the framework of teaching we reveal some blind spots to students and we try to enrich towards open and freer explicit the interpretation of the concept and a better orientation at the problematic of its elaboration for children and pupils within the framework of cross-cutting theme of A child and a family. Teachers should be therefore able to explain to pupils all types of families and thereto in an acceptable, sensitive and, if possible, a positive way.
