Systematic surveys carried out in the southernmost part of the Iblei plateau during the last two ... more Systematic surveys carried out in the southernmost part of the Iblei plateau during the last two decades have brought forward consistent evidence on a tight network of Late Antique cemeteries located between the Irminio and Tellaro valleys. This research plan is currently entering its second stage, aiming at systematic investigations, whenever possible, on particularly relevant sites by means of a cooperation agreement with the University of Hradec Králove (Czech Republic). That is the case of the archaeological excavations at Scorrione, in Modica territory. The site is located next to the road connecting the Modica plateau with the coastline; judging from the abundant funerary sites connected to it, this communication axis was intensively used during Antiquity. The cemetery of Scorrione is formed by two funerary clusters; the southernmost one is formed by at least four visible hypogea. The investigations at the site have been focused both inside and outside hypogeum D, a trapezoid funerary chamber with a central baldachin which, before the start of the excavations, was filled with detritus almost up to its sealing. The stratigraphic excavations have freed the whole of the chamber’s inner spaces, down to its trampling surface. Besides unveiling the whole of the baldachin and its access structures, the removal of the superficial layers has revealed a number of relevant finds in terms of both inhumations with grave goods and of significant architectural features.

CE, Carthago Spartaria (modern Cartagena) became one of the most important cities in the Byzantine province of Spania. Recent archaeological excavations at Cerro del Molinete have significantly increased our knowledge of the ancient city, enabling the exploration of an early Byzantine neighborhood built over the Roman Forum district. A cast bronze ewer of type Werner A2 was found in a pit dug over the temple that presided over the Forum. The associated materials, mainly pottery and glass vessels, are compatible with a deposition between 580/90 and 650/60 CE. This assemblage improves our understanding of the trade networks interconnecting the Mediterranean basin during the 6th and 7th c. CE. In this context, we argue that the unknown production center of the A2 ewers was located in the northern Adriatic, probably in Ravenna

Alessandria / I) can be better understood in the wider framework of the production and circulation of cast bronze vessels in the early medieval Mediterranean and Central Europe areas. New typological proposals, refined dating and thorough distribution analysis prove suitable research tools to provide a renewed survey on early medieval trade among different Western territories: here, new production centres seem to have emerged, while the extent of the contacts with the Eastern Mediterranean appears weaker than traditionally assumed. These results mirror the major economic and political transformations underwent by Western Europe and the Mediterranean basin throughout the 7th and 8th centuries, according to a trend also attested by other categories of archaeological finds.

Only a small part of them is stratigraphically or spatially related to early churches, and the overwhelming majority lacks completely any archaeological context. Against this background, the objects discovered in 1897 at Morbello – an ewer, a lamp and a thurible in cast bronze – convey relevant data on the composition, the chronology and the function of such assemblages. The items from Morbello – studied here in comparison to not only other archaeological finds, but also to written and iconographic sources – provide new data on the circulation and use of liturgical implements in the West during the 6th-9th centuries. At the same time, the assemblage represents an excellent starting point for addressing other prominent issues, more generally related to cast bronze items and the so-called Coptic vessels.

Numerous archaeological indicators of the Chernyakhov culture and of the later "federate culture"... more Numerous archaeological indicators of the Chernyakhov culture and of the later "federate culture" underwent became significantly widespread in different territories of Western and Central Europe between the late 4th and the first half of the 5th century. The explanations of the phenomenon may differ from one case to another: population displacements, political and military events, state presents... Nonetheless it appears to be significant enough to deserve a study from a general perspective. Our paper takes as starting point the materialization of the phenomenon in two distant territories: the area of the Vinaříce group in Bohemia and the Garonne valley and the Narbonensis in Southern France. Further centres of reception of "eastern" influences such as Southern Moravia, the Middle Danube provinces, North-Eastern Italy or the South-Western corner of the Iberian Peninsula are also considered. The arrival of the "eastern" features and their local development is examined from a diachronic perspective, addressing continuity issues on the basis of the comparison with later contexts, such as the cemeteries of the central Castilian plateau in Spain and the Vandal-period grave goods in Northern Africa. Such an approach outlines a consistent background in which the late 5th and early 6th century evidence of direct contacts between Bohemia and the Visigothic area can be placed.

This paper proposes a combined study of the grave goods, the topography and environment of cemeteries and their links to the ‘centers of power’ enabling to outline some archaeological traces of social stratification. They also help define a number of aspects of the diachronic development of the social and economic organization of both rural and urban communities. A new, multi-factorial approach to the material evidence of social and economic processes as well as their relations with other cultural phenomena (such as fashion diffusion) is also suggested.

The results enable to hypothesize the existence of almost invisible outbound-and-return population transfers between both territories.

The liturgical furnishings and equipment of the churches from the 8th to 9th century. Antique and... more The liturgical furnishings and equipment of the churches from the 8th to 9th century. Antique and modern, local and imported objects according to archaeological, written and iconographic sources.
The bulk of remains of early medieval churches surviving to the present day consists little more than parts of their former architectural plan and their floors. Even in the best preserved buildings the interior furniture and décor underwent dramatic changes throughout the time. The early medieval liturgical stone furnishings (altar screens, ciboria, ambos etc.) are almost always found in fragments, reused as building material in the high and late medieval ages, and they seem destined to stay (also in scientific publications) detached from the metal, glass or textile objects to which they were once closely related. Nevertheless, these architectural elements must be imagined in their original context, enriched by precious curtains, lamps, candelabras, colourful icons, whereas liturgical implements such as chalices, patens, thuribles, jugs and paterae were displayed during the celebration of the mass.
This paper is an endeavor to reconstruct the main features, locations and uses of such elements. In order to do so, we have adopted a multidisciplinary approach integrating data from archaeological, iconographic and written sources (the Stuttgart-Psalter being our main figural source, owing to its reliability and exceptional attention to details). This method has enabled us to identify which liturgical implements could have been used in an early medieval church. They are characterised by very different chronologies and production centers. Among them, some were nearly contemporary with the written and iconographic sources (end of the 8th - beginning of the 9th centuries), others were real antiquarian pieces, produced up to 300 or 400 years earlier. This fact reflects a pattern of accumulation which finds an echo both in well-known church treasures and in the furniture of present-day churches, in which some of the liturgical objects still used can be products of the Renaissance or Baroque period.
Owing to the particular complexity of the issue and the considerable scientific debate, special attention has been devoted to the so-called »Coptic« bronze vessels, used both in »sacred« and »profane« backgrounds. The analysis of securely dated contexts and a more careful typological classification convey new perspectives on the links between such objects and the early medieval liturgical spaces.
In the addendum (»Appendice«) we collected all the miniatures of the Stuttgart-Psalter which display elements of church impements (chalices, patens, thuribles, jugs and paterae, lamps, processional crosses, curtains etc.), in an attempt to render more easily accessible the comprehensive documentation of the Psalter.

The Conference aims to bring together a range of experts in the fields of archaeology, history, epigraphy, and anthropology for the establishment of new methods and theoretical perspectives in the study of death and burial in late antique and early medieval society in the Mediterranean and neighbouring regions between the 4th and the 9th centuries. In particular, the discussion will focus on the concept of “privilege” and the means of self-representation in the funerary sphere. Scholars from all over Europe have already confirmed their participation.
The Scientific Committee is now inviting submission of abstracts for posters!
Posters are invited on current issues and research in the funerary archaeology of Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages, including excavation of cemeteries and single tombs, monumental and topographical features of cemeteries, artefacts, epigraphy, funerary iconography, analysis of human remains. Two poster sessions will be held during the conference (June 28 and 29, afternoon) where the authors will be present to discuss and answer questions regarding their research presented on their posters. Extended versions of the selected posters will be included in the publication of the conference proceedings, scheduled for late 2018.
All abstracts and posters can be submitted in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish.
The authors of the chosen proposals will be responsible for printing and bringing the poster to the conference. Unfortunately, the budget restrictions do not allow the conference's organization to cover the authors' travel and meal expenses. Nevertheless, we will be happy to pick them up at the Novara train station or at Milano-Malpensa international airport and to help them find suitable accommodation in Pella or in the neighbouring villages. Authors travelling by car will find free parking at the conference's headquarters.
Participation is free. Those interested should complete and send the attached form and to sepoltureprivilegiate2017@gmail.com by February 15th, 2017. The authors of the chosen proposals will be contacted per email before the end of April.
We are looking forward to meet you and to hear about your research in Pella!
