The conversion of the concept and the teaching of approximation function for analog low pass filt... more The conversion of the concept and the teaching of approximation function for analog low pass filter to computer aided numerical class project as an active learning strategy is presented. Governing equations for five approximation functions are presented and discussed. It is recommended that students are tasked to develop computer programs in any convenient computer programming language to make the pole-zero plot, obtain the transfer function, and plot the frequency response of low pass filters. Steps for such programs are suggested. Typical programs were developed and tested. The pole-zero plots and frequency response graphs generated are good illustrative and innovative teaching aids. Linear-phase response over the passband is a characteristic of Bessel approximation function but suffers less amplitude discrimination in the stopband. Chebyshev and Inverse Chebyshev approximation functions have the same order requirement which is usually greater than that of Elliptic approximation function but less than that of Butterworth approximation function. Elliptic approximation function is the best choice although it is more complex than the others. Through this computer aided numerical class project, the authors themselves gained more insight in the subject matter; certainly, students will learn actively.

Using drip irrigation set up for fertigation allows the root zone of the plant to be continuously supplied with nutrients and water throughout the farm season. Conventionally, fertigated systems are controlled using pre-set timers to turn on and off fertilizer injectors and irrigation pumps, and also to set the frequency and duration of supply. Therefore, fertigation management is usually based only on predictive algorithms or historical data, which may not be accurate for all situations. Development of a microcontroller-based fertigation management system within the Nigerian (Sub-Saharan Africa) region using a capacitive soil moisture sensor and a JXCT-IOT Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR) soil nitrogen sensor is presented. The sensors are placed in the soil around the root region of plants to enable a microcontroller to monitor the soil properties, determine how much water or nutrients the plant needs, and supply the amount needed through a drip irrigation framework. The tap water and urea solution are placed inside separate reservoirs and supplied to the plant through solenoid valves controlled by the microcontroller. Furthermore, an Internet of Things (IoT) client (Blynk IoT) was integrated with the fertigation system so that the fertigation process, as well as the soil state, could be monitored and controlled remotely. The data read from the sensors as well as the state of the solenoid valves were sent over the internet to be stored on the Blynk servers. A website and mobile (Android) dashboards were also created using the Blynk IOT platform to display the states of the valves and the sensor readings. The automatic fertigation system was found to be functional. The system keeps the soil moisture and nitrogen content between the recommended ranges: moisture content between 25% and 46% and nitrogen content between 20 mg/kg and 30 mg/kg for cucumber crops. Fertigation events occur every morning between 5 and 6 am.

This global pandemic has spread almost all countries and continents of the world. The pandemic has undoubtedly impacted on global economic growth leading to review of the global outlook by most rating agencies. The policy makers were confronted with decision dilemma of either saving lives or continue the pursuit of political and economic gains. The bitter bill of shutting down businesses, schools inclusive, crystalizes the dilemma. These interruptions will not just be a short-term issue, but can also have long-term consequences for the affected stakeholders. School lockdown disruptions to daily routine affects psychological wellbeing, academic, education approaches and finance models. The degree of impact on stakeholders varies. Covid19 is novel with little or no evidence on its impact hence the need to investigate the phenomenon. A total of 291 participants located in the 5 local government areas were involved in the survey. The survey data was tested for validity, reliability and value. Interview complimented the quantitative data. Even though a short period of schooling lockdown, the effect provides a guide to reasonably peep into likely possible outcomes as an extremely rough measure of the impact of the current school closures. The real quantitative impact will be better analysed post lockdown and covid19 era. This paper adopts regression research design in the analysis, specifically, smart PLS modelling was used. The study has implications on students, parents, leadership of schools, and operators of businesses on campus. The study further provides concept deployment, evidence from Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria and useful addition to theory, literature and practice. The study found that 10 of the 12 hypotheses were supported and 2 unsupported. In addition, change oriented leadership moderated the relationships. The underpinning theory, change oriented leadership, the methodology, and implications of quantitative and qualitative data were discussed. The paper concludes that there is a significant positive relationship between change oriented leadership and the independent variable thereby confirming the model theorised. Also the compliments of interview result reinforced the postulation. In conclusion, the present study has added valuable theoretical, practically and methodologically to the growing body of knowledge in the field of social sciences and management.

Image de-noising has remained an active area of research. Results of numerical experiments on the robustness of median filter for suppression of Salt and Pepper Noise (SPN) and Random Valued Impulse Noise (RVIN) of varying noise densities are presented and discussed. Varying densities of SPN and RVIN were simulated and used to corrupt five selected test images which have different image frequencies. The corrupted images were filtered with Median Filters which has 3 by 3 kernel size. The effects of larger kernels were also examined. The performance metrics are the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Gain. SPN is found to have more adverse effects on images than RVIN. However, the Median filter is found to achieve a higher degree of noise suppression with SPN than RVIN. Effects of SPN and RVIN increase with an increase in noise density. Median filtering of SPN and RVIN corrupted images are found to be satisfactory with 3 by 3 kernel for n...

Existing autoclaves are mostly unaffordable by rural healthcare practitioners, and when they managed to procure them, the electricity supply to power the autoclaves is epileptic. The solar-powered autoclave alternatives are too bulky with a very high initial cost. Hence, low-cost biofuel-powered autoclave becomes an attractive option, and this study sought to present the design, development and clinical evaluation of the device performance. With the global drive for the adoption of green energy, biofuel will not only reduce greenhouse gas emission but also provide revenue for local producers and reduce biomass associated health complications. The theoretical energy requirement for the sterilisation process was calculated. The standard pressure and temperature needed for sterilisation were tested to be 121 °C and 15 psi. The device was also clinically tested with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria obtained from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital using Brain heart Infusion Broth, MacConkey and Blood agar as cultured media. No bacteria growth was observed when the samples containing the bacteria colony were autoclaved by the designed autoclave and incubated at 37 °C for 2 d. Hence, the device met the mechanical and biological validation standards for effective sterilisation.

Blurring due to relative motion between imaging system and object is simulated. Image restoration in the frequency domain by Wiener filter is implemented. The parameters of motion blur, length and direction, are varied. The parameter K (NSR-Noise to Signal Ratio) and Gain of Wiener filter are evaluated. The quality of restored images is also observed and recorded. The study is carried out with six test images. With parameter K set to zero, the Wiener filter is put into inverse filter mode; Gain is negative in all cases and quality and appearance of restored images are very poor. Clear images are obtained with K > 0. Wiener filter’s Gain increases as K increases from 0 to a value termed ‘Optimum K’ when the Gain is maximum; the Gain reduces with further increase in K. Motion blur functions of the same length but opposite directions are equivalent as they have same values of...

The resultant effect is that some features of the acquired image are obscured. Image enhancement processes an image so that the resulting image will be more suitable than the original image for a specific application. Algorithms for various image enhancement techniques are developed as digital computer programs and tested in Matlab working environment. The effects of the various image enhancement techniques are compared. The choice of the best technique is a function of input image and desired effect. Histogram processing and Linear Point Transformation (Auto-scaling) are found to improve both contrast and brightness. Logarithm and exponential transformations have opposite effects on input image. Post-processing has been used to correct the problem of poor illumination. It has helped in bringing out obscured details in images. Significant improvements in contrast and brightness have been recorded.

A transmission line may be single-core conductor or stranded conductor. Stranding reduces line reactance, skin effect and the tendency of occurrence of corona effect. Transmission line parameters such as inductance and capacitance depend on the geometric mean radius (GMR) of the line. GMR is essential for Voltage and Voltage-Drop analysis which is necessary to ensure save operation of power system. Arithmetic and logical models of triangular, hexagonal, circular and sector shaped stranded conductors are presented. The models which accurately predict the Cartesian coordinates of centers of strands are coded into computer programs which facilitate both the accurate graphical drawing and accurate computation of GMR of stranded conductors.

The second-order statistics were adopted as image features by the system as a means of distinguishing between images. The numbers of co-occurrences of pairs of gray values in an image are recorded in the Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). Five of the second-order statistics which usually have values greater than 1 were selected; Contrast, Dissimilarity, Entropy, Mean (μ), and Standard Deviation (σ). Thus, fifteen features were recorded for each image from the Horizontal GLCM, Vertical GLCM, and Diagonal GLCM. During Database querying, features of the Query Image are computed and compared with those of the Database images, and Euclidean distance is computed as a similarity measure. The system displays the Query Image, the Retrieved Image (if any), the Best Match Image, and Eight Close Images with their Euclidean distances from the Query Image. The scheme embeds a rgb color watermark in a rgb host image. The Watermark is pre-processed such that it’s converted from rgb color space to index image and then to binary bits. The watermark embedding is done only in the Y component of the host in YCbCr color space. The Y component is sub-divided into 8-by-8 blocks of pixels which are transformed to frequency domain using Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Hosting Pixels in the DCT 8-by-8 block are classified into regions: Low-Frequency, Middle-Frequency, High-Frequency, Low and Middle-Frequency and the whole 8-by-8 block. The watermarking scheme was subjected to image compression attack and Gaussian noise attack and found to be robust to both attacks. A coding constant 5 a is found to produce satisfactory compromise between imperceptibility and robustness. Highest robustness is recorded wit...

However, pressure due to busy life style, work and sometimes physiological factors have placed constraints on adequate and healthy sleep pattern leading to several sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. Sleep disorder affects the quality of life of such patients as it grossly reduces efficiency at work and leads to poor mental and physical health. Available drugs to treat this disorder are addictive with strong adverse effects, while existing devices to provide intervention are very expensive. Hence, the development of an affordable, portable electronic sleep inducer with display unit is presented. In this paper, a method of embedding a color image as digital watermark into a host image is proposed. The watermark is first converted from the rgb color space to an index image. The index image is decomposed into a series of binary digital images for implementation as multiple watermarking. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to reasonable image processing operations and the lossy compression techniques such as JPEG compression. Furthermore, application of democratic approach in signal sampling is found to produce better signal to noise ratio compared with uniform quantization approach.

Inpainting is required to recover the missing portions. Inpainting is cleaning off dirt, filling discolored sports, and repairing torn, warped, or cracked in a damaged image. The existing Navier-Stokes Partial Differential Equations (PDE) method for inpainting is iterative by nature, with a time variable serving as iteration parameter. For reasons of stability, a large number of iterations can be needed which results in a computational complexity that is often too large for interactive image manipulation. A non-iterative automated mechanism for image inpainting is proposed. Colors are treated as fluid that flow or diffuse from the surrounding areas into the empty region. Gains ranging from 9.44 dB to 19.49 dB were obtained with the non-iterative automated inpainting scheme. The automated inpainting scheme overcomes the computational complexity associated with the existing Navier-Stokes PDE inpainting method, and is more suitable for interactive image manipulations.

The process of switching the electronic devices in a power electronic converter from one state to another is called modulation. There are a number of modulation strategies. The less the degree to which undesirable harmonics are created the better the modulation strategy. The figure of merit or criterion of performance is the first-order weighted total harmonic distortion factor (WTHD0). The analysis of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Schemes is discussed. Numerical Integration Based Solution is proposed. The results obtained from Matlab sub-programs developed for the analysis are presented. The proposed solution improves both the speed and the accuracy of analysis.

Columbia Object Image Library image collection of 7,200 i...
The development of a digital watermarking scheme associated with YCbCr color space in the Discret... more The development of a digital watermarking scheme associated with YCbCr color space in the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) Domain is presented.

High level digital image processing such as object recognition, segmentation and robot vision depend on the accuracy of edge detection. Adding product of the detected image edge and a scaling constant k to the original image is useful for image edge enhancement for better visual perception. Numerical Experiment on high pass spatial filtering for image edge detection and image edge enhancement is presented. Eleven alternative combinations of Mean filtering function hm, Gaussian filtering function hg and three versions of Laplacian filtering functions hL1, hL2 and hL3 are considered. Changes in Frequency Estimate, Brightness and Contrast produced by the eleven alternative combinations of filtering functions are measured and recorded. Results show that Laplacian functions are high pass filtering functions while Mean function and Gaussian function are low pass filtering functions. hL2 is found to be the best among the three...

It uses geomagnetic property of the earth coupled with electromagnetic wave induction to stimulate sleep. The signal frequency was generated by IC4047 coupled with Arduino Uno and ATmega 328p for device control. The output of this electronic sleep inducer is found to satisfactorily...
