This complexity stems from the general belief that anybody can teach. Beginning from the housewife who taught her daughter how to prepare food to a roadside mechanic who taught his apprentice how to service a car, it is the act of teaching that has taken place. The above impression of teaching also affects the societal perception of a teacher. Many people see nothing special in what a teacher does. Therefore, this paper is specifically focused on the perception of parents about how they perceive teachers and their duties in the ten Local Government Education Areas (LGEA) of Oke-ogun, Oyo state. A sample of 673 participants was taken for the study. This comprises of 391 men and 282 women with average age of 51.25years and standard deviation of 2.36years. Descriptive research design was used for the study and simple random sampling was used for the study. The study was carried out to identify the roles of the teachers as role models to the learners in the academic performance of learners in public examinations and in the mode of behaviour as means of providing solution to the problem. The manners in which they perform their duty are actually working against effective performance of our learners in schools and in their ways of life. The researcher recommends that the government should try as much as possible to inaugurate a very formidable monitoring group that will check the excesses of these teachers to forestall wastages in the educational sector. It is of the opinion of the researcher that if the abovementioned factors are put into consideration in teaching-learning process, there may be improvement in the performances and the behaviour of learners in our schools and society at large.

After passing the School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) conducted by either West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or National Examinations Council (NECO) and the University Matriculation Examination (UME), the candidates are admitted into various academic programmes. However, at the end of every session, the Grade Point Average (GPA) is used to assess the overall performance of the freshmen. More often, some students fail to meet the required number of units. This leads to withdrawal from such academic programmes. This, to a great extent, has cast aspersions on the integrity of the examination bodies. Studies have concentrated on school transition and adjustment of freshmen but little attention has been paid to the correlation between entry qualifications and university academic performance of the freshmen. This study, therefore, examined the predictive values of SSCE, UME scores, and Psycho-demographic factors (age, gender and academic self-efficacy) in respect of academic performance of university freshmen in SouthWest , Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design of ex-post-facto type. All the five federal universities in the southwest were selected for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 2,518 university freshmen (1,423 males and 1,095 females). The average age of the participants was 20.63 with standard deviation of 2.96 years. Secondary data were collected from the selected universities' Records and Admissions Offices. The Academic Self-confidence Scale (α=0.86) was used as a measure of academic self-efficacy. Seven research questions were raised and answered. Correlation and Multiple Regression were used for data analysis.

Simple random sampling technique was used to select 5 public secondary schools out of 18 found in the area. A structured questionnaire was administered to students and teachers using systematic and accidental sampling techniques. Data obtained were analysed using tables, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis. Result of Pearson's correlation revealed significant associations among the independent variables (time watched, time spent, number watch, type watched, parents' reaction and watch reason) and the dependent variable (academic performance) of secondary school students. The multiple regression result also showed that the academic performance of secondary school students is significantly influenced time watched, time spent, number watched, type watched, parents reaction and watch reason (F = 26.125, p<0.01). Time spent watching home video was identified by the model as the most potent predictor variable of academic failure (B = 0.349, t = 8.134, p<0.01). Hence, to tackle this recurrent phenomenon in our homes, parents are encouraged to monitor the shows, films and programmes their children watch. Also, to enhance students' academic performance, parents are advised to ensure that high-quality educational programmes be made available and children should be encouraged to watch informational, educational and nonviolent movies and programmes.

The study adopted a descriptive research design of correlational type. The secondary school teachers in Saki township were selected using multi-stage sampling technique and 718 teachers were selected at random for the study out of 2456 teachers working in this local government. The Teacher's characteristics scale (= 0.86) was used as a measure of teacher's characteristics factor. Three research questions were answered in the study. Correlation and Multiple Regression were used as tools of analysis. The eight variables (teachers academic qualification, teachers professional qualification, teachers content knowledge, teachers instructional quality, teachers' evaluation procedures, teachers' work value, teachers' classroom attendance' and teachers' job satisfaction) when combined, accounted for 54.6% of the total variance in the academic performance. There was also significant relative contribution of the independent variables (teachers academic qualification, teachers content knowledge, teachers instructional quality, teachers' evaluation procedures and teachers' job satisfaction) to academic performance of the participants (F(8,710)=47.48; p < 0.05). Also, the teachers content knowledge made the most significant relative contribution to the prediction of academic performance(B=0.544, t=7.692, p<0.05); followed by teachers instructional quality (B=0.531, t=12.767, p<0.05); teachers academic qualification (B=0.445, t=5.696, p<0.05), followed by teachers evaluation procedures (B=0.405, t=3.924, p<0.05) and then, teachers job satisfaction (B= 0.176, t=2.369, p<0.05). However, teachers' professional qualification, teachers work value and teachers classroom attendance were not potent predictors of academic performance of secondary school students in the surveyed local government area. The eight independent variables (teachers academic qualification, teachers professional qualification, teachers content knowledge, teachers instructional quality, teachers' evaluation procedures, teachers' work value, teachers' classroom attendance' and teachers' job satisfaction) considered in this study were potent factors to academic performance of secondary school students in the study area. Based on these findings, teacher's content knowledge and teachers' instructional quality could be regarded as adequate teachers' characteristics for brilliant academic performance.

Family & Community Health, 2003

A prevention program that promotes attitudinal and behavioral change has been repeatedly recommen... more A prevention program that promotes attitudinal and behavioral change has been repeatedly recommended as an effective measure for community prevention and control of HIV/AIDS. Within the past decade, disease control programs among African Americans have shown no significant changes, as HIV/AIDS and related infections continue as the leading causes of death and disability in this population. It is particularly acute among African American females who, although representing only 13.9% of the United States female population, presently account for over 60% of all AIDS cases among females in the United States. The epidemic nature of the disease in this group poses the issue of African American women's rights and underscores their physical, emotional and sociocultural vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. This study used an open-ended attitude, knowledge, feelings, and behavior questionnaire (AKFBQ) survey approach to assess knowledge and various HIV/AIDS high-risk attitudinal and behavioral factors that affect the incidence, mortality, and morbidity of HIV/AIDS among women in specific urban centers and rural communities in the United States. Data analysis showed no differences in factors favoring rate of infection and level of spread of HIV/AIDS among the women in both the urban and rural communities. Although level of knowledge was higher among the urban subjects than rural ones, their beliefs, attitude/feelings, and potential for behavioral change did not differ significantly among women in the two communities. This article advocates both an ethnically sensitive and gender-specific HIV/AIDS intervention program for African American women and a more active involvement in and participation of African American leaders, parents, and faith-based communities in AIDS control efforts for African Americans.

Family & Community Health, 2003
