How important it is for the identity of that community or to what extent it symbolizes that community can only be established after in-depth study. It is crucial that revitalization activities involve the community. If not, efforts would be pointless. Mak Yong is one of the Malay performing art traditions that has been revitalized over the last five years. It is an art form that originates in southern Thailand and was brought to Bintan in the Riau Islands (Kepulauan Riau, Kepri) via Singapore. It combines dialogue, dance, singing, music, and stories and may still be found in the Riau Islands in Indonesia. It is interesting to show how Mak Yong has represented and expressed Malay dynamics by means of revitalizations efforts.

Likewise in Indonesia, tradition is often placed as something unattractive and lacking in attention. The assumption is actually not right that makes many people, especially young people feel not modern / out of date when following or related to tradition. Therefore, it is not surprising that news about traditions that become internationally respected cultural heritage is also considered as less interesting news. Even when the Government of Indonesia ratified the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the protection of cultural heritage and in 2017 enacted special laws that protect traditions in the form of various cultural objects, the community paid almost no attention. This paper presents the potential of tradition in Indonesia as an intangible cultural heritage that has cultural strength to build civilization and be the basis of sustainable development. Traditions contain local wisdom and traditional knowledge which can be inherited and developed as a source of scientific development.

Ways of seeing and understanding vernacular knowledge centred on the production of the traditional Acehnese house are revisited with this research through a multimodal platform coined in this study as the "Aceh Method." This is a method devised as a means or producing a new resource through collating, interpreting, recording, drawing, capturing and engaging with the newly collected data to rethink and reexamine the Acehnese house. It includes re-envisioning remaining evidence and understandings of these traditional domestic timber buildings of the Acehnese to bring together new insight. The main aim is to offer alternative futures for urban development in Aceh which consider socio-cultural conditions and the tools for communities to meet their individual aspirations. This paper reports on the fieldwork activities conducted for July 2017 which have led to the piloting of the "Aceh Method." The three main forms of recording of four houses and some selected streetscapes in Lambunot Village, Indrapuri, Aceh Besar involved 1. VERNADOC-analogue measuring and drawing on site; 2. Digital capture of the surrounding environment through the gigapan; 3. Documentary filming and an ethnographical study of the interactions between villagers, researchers, students around the implementation of the above methods. Rather than investigating sites for additional remains of the Acehnese past in the conventional sense of writing history, this proposal contributes to ways of understanding past built environments in promoting a field of knowledge based on regional conditions, onsite cultural immersion with the subjects and artefacts and to disseminate to the world the value of Acehnese built cultural heritage.
