Abstract

Surface photographic photometry in the B system is given for NGC 3898 and NGC 4036 up to a threshold brightness level of 27.0 microns mag/arc sq s. Faint features are detected in the luminosity profiles of the two axes in both galaxies. The integrated apparent magnitude of NGC 3898 is considerably brighter than quoted in the literature. Assuming an Hubble constant of 100 km/s Mpc, the overall dimensions of the two objects, the sizes of the nuclear regions and the absolute luminosities appear comparable. This investigation has revealed the presence of absorbing matter in the E/L galaxy NGC 4036 and confirmed a typical trend in the ellipticity curve, detected also in NGC 3898, which has been found in most of the systems studied in this series of papers.
