Inside IT, software is a key aspect in the governance scenario. The increasing pressures by regulatory, and compliance efforts are changing the software governance arena, thus there is a need to focus on the current state of the topic. Despite this acknowledged need, the studies on Software Governance are still scarce. In this paper, authors expand the software governance model introduced by Chulani et al. [1] with new concerns derived from the alignment of the model with the IT Governance standard, ISO/ IEC 38500 and the experience of authors. Moreover, the new model proposes the categorization of these concerns to govern software development activities aligned with IT Governance.

The increasing number of users, especially due to the popularization of web applications and web-based services, produces continuously capacity problems at data centers due to performance requirements. These web applications, which run on web servers, have an influence in energy consumption at data centers. Thus, a new challenge directly related to this area of research emerges: the energy efficiency of web systems. Additionally, new server virtualization technologies are appearing and have significant benefits in terms of hardware utilization, energy efficiency and configuration flexibility for its performance. We propose a short study of energy consumption in relation to web server virtualization and performance.

Thus, recently the research community has focused its efforts on frameworks for optimised usage of the available resources that will result with energy-efficient and highly effective data centers. Toward this goal, in this paper we present a community-based framework for virtual machine placement inside a cloud data center. The framework is based on the complex network structural property of grouping tightly coupled nodes, and a matching process that maps virtual to physical communities while employing different optimisation functions on different hierarchy levels. The presented simulation results of the framework application reflect its high usage potential achieved by improvement in communication efficiency and reduced power consumption compared to the traditional heuristics.

The previously implemented and simulated framework using Matlab is being transferred to a richer cloud computing simulation environment that is CloudSim. The use of CloudSim permits, apart from validating the previous research, the introduction of many additional parameters and criteria in the simulated scenario thus enabling a far richer and in-depth analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of the proposed solution, such as power-awareness, that is an additional feature included in CloudSim libraries.
