Academic interests

I address pedagogical and didactical issues facing the global crises of our time related to the environment, climate, societal inequity and threats to diversity. In the context of United Nations the current crises are conceived as a matter of sustainability.

I conceptualize sustainability as concerns for justice, encouraging a reflexive approach. This implies, among other things, to situate the concept historically and clarify how it is employed with regard to what and who are included and excluded.

Within the field of environmental and sustainability education I am engaged in normative and ethical issues and explore the relationship between school and society. This also involves the relationship between the nation state and global challenges. Here my interest is drawn towards emerging tensions and contradictions, also related to notions of the common good.

Other issues that concern me, are the relationships between school subjects and transformative and transgressive practices related to Bildung and interdisiciplinarity. I adhere to both philosophy of education, general didactics/curriculum studies, and subject didactics and often cross the borders between well-established research fields. I have teaching commitments related to professional ethics, and here address the societal mandate of professions and conditions related to the practicing of professional deliberation. I also have an interest in religious education that I currently explore as part of the humanities´ contribution to sustainability didactics.
