He carries with him the ascetic experience of Orthodox monasticism, being himself an ascetic figure of the Orthodox Church and the child of a pious priestly Serbian family that was since his early childhood initiated to the truths of the Holy Scripture. Having acquired the mind of Christ, he discerns between the philosophy according to man and the philosophy according to Christ. He authentically assimilates the Christ-shaped thought of Saint Paul as well as the entire apostolic and patristic tradition, in a conscious attempt to meet the tough challenges the Western world faces with amidst a theologico-philosophical tradition tripping in the turbulence of atheism on the one hand and of self-deification on the other.
In this paper I attempt to argue for the boundaries that philosophy, in a broad sense, encounters with, once one acknowledges the paradoxal identification of the First Principle of the Greeks, the Good or the One of the Neoplatonists, with the Person of Christ the Logos, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. My ambition is to add a tiniest little stone to the appreciation of the enormous ascetical, theological, and philosophical contribution of this great Serbian Church Father, and to highlight the significance of his spiritual legacy in East and West.

St Justin the New of Celije (Popović)᾽ thought evolves in an engagement with the universal philosophical and theological tradition. This engagement is condensed and even evaluated in the work of a personality of global recognition, universal intellectual, philosophical and theological value, and a person imbued with the Orthodox dogmatic teaching and ecclesial experience. To grasp the philosophical and theological contribution of St. Justin as well as his decisive and tough criticism of Western Christianity, one must briefly review the historical frame of the Hellenic gentile world and the novelty of the Christian universe, as these are two fields from which the Saint draws lines of his thought.
His thought is not only critic but also philanthropic. Pervaded by a cogent personal experience that Christ is the truly, and only, New under the sun, St. Justin has the courage and the strength to criticize the modern European human being and the European world that, as he proves in his works, remained ‘gentile’, albeit with a Christian garment. More specifically, with St. Justin becomes evident and plain how western scholastic theology was at large identified with Aristotelian and Neoplatonist metaphysics. This theology gave birth to its immediate offspring, the post-medieval western philosophical tradition, i.e. subjectivism, rationalism, empiricism, materialism, atheism, criticism, idealism, existentialism, nihilism and the recent ecumenism, all of which determined the route of modern western world. St. Justin is aware of this sequential development and by firmly standing upon his orthodox ecclesial experience he philanthropically and in the spirit of Christ, though harshly, criticizes the western stream of criticism that leads to atheism.
This chapter is focussed on, and highlights aspects of the orthodox foundation of St. Justin’s criticism, with the aim to underline the significance of the Saint’s theological and intellectual contributions to the modern European and western Christian world.

Platonism and Christian Thought in Late Antiquity, Jun 1, 2019

The present chapter aims at offering insights into Dionysius the Areopagite’s notion of theurgy, ... more The present chapter aims at offering insights into Dionysius the Areopagite’s notion of theurgy, both with respect to the metaphysical principles that connect with “θεουργία” and the particular sacramental reality that emerges from it. Pavlos argues that despite the linguistic affinities and terminological appropriations - whether Iamblichean or Proclean - Dionysius’ premises on the matter remain radically different from that of Neoplatonism, both in terms of the sacramental tradition he recapitulates and the wider Christian metaphysical contours he adheres to. Of central importance in the argument is the striking fact that, throughout the Corpus Dionysiacum, “theurgy” is a term exclusively used by the author to refer to the works of Christ in His earthly historical presence, and to the whole divine providential, creative, sustaining, and divinising activity and work of God. Consequently, if for Dionysius a “theurgist” (θεουργός) could not be any human being, but only Christ Himself, the God-Man, Dionysian theurgy aims at the deification of man, which is nothing other than Christ-likeness.

Πλωτίνου, Περὶ ἀρετῶν, Ι.2 [19], 1.1-10 Since it is here that evils are, and ''they must necessarily haunt this region,'' and the soul wants to escape from evils, we must escape from here. What, then, is to escape? ''Being made like god,'' Plato says. And we become godlike ''if we become righteous and holy with the help of wisdom'', and are altogether in virtue. If then it is virtue which makes us like, it presumably makes us like a being possessing virtue. Then what god would that be? Would it be the one that appears to be particularly characterised by the possession of virtue, that is, the soul of the universe and its ruling principle, in which there is a wonderful wisdom? It is reasonable to suppose that we should become like this principle, as we are here in its universe. Armstrong, A.H., Plotinus, Ennead I.2 1 2. The good is perhaps the core idea, both literarily and metaphorically said, all philosophical discussions in Late Antiquity permanently pay attention to. Irrespectively of how is one classifying a thinker to be, a Platonist or an Aristotelian, one cannot omit to count the good. Daring a generalization, one could remark that the entire thinking of that period is based upon the good. Participation is that fundamental term and concept the entire Platonic language employs in order to ground and then s...

To reveal and respond to some of them it seems it is not only a matter of strength, of an appropriate contemplative power or philosophical capacity we may possess. It would be rather effectual for it to adapt our thinking to the spirit of Plato, when he admits the difficulty of speaking of the God in the Timaeus 1 , as well as to listen carefully to Dionysius the Areopagite, who in his treatise On the Divine Names, declares: 'We must not then dare to speak, or indeed to form any conception, of the hidden super-essential Godhead, except those things that are revealed to us from the Holy Scriptures' 2 . But if we have to trust to the above quotations, how then is it possible to accept the claim that God is Good and, moreover that we, the human beings, have the cap...

Plotinus is a key figure in such an examination. This paper proposes a preliminary study of the Plotinian concept of aptitude, as it emerges throughout the Enneads and aims at shedding light to certain aspects of Plotinian metaphysics that bring Plotinus into dialogue with the thought of Church fathers by means either of similarities or differences between Neoplatonist and Christian thought. It will be argued that the concept of aptitude is crucial as it involves the relation between the One and the many, the reality of participation, the relation of the cosmos with, and its dependence on, the superior spheres of being, the bestowal of divine gifts upon beings, and the possibility of the deification of the human being.

It explores the concept of aptitude (ἐπιτηδειότης) as a critical component of the Dionysian development of participation, with a view to the Neoplatonic background of the concept, especially as established by Plotinus and Proclus. The aim of the study is to argue for a novelty consisting in the fact that the Areopagite regards aptitude as a fundamental element that sets forth the respective capacity of beings as the regulatory principle for participation in the life of divinity.

The good and the participation in the good are major concepts upon which the most radical diverge... more The good and the participation in the good are major concepts upon which the most radical divergence between Platonism and Christian Platonism, Pagan Platonism and Christianity, is based: namely, the no longer remoteness of the One or the Good from the intelligible and sensible beings, for the sake of the providential, economical and, finally, redemptive identification of it with the human being, which opens the road to deification for the soul and the body together as a union, as a unity.

A certain principle pervading the whole of Dionysian authorship has been commonly acknowledged by... more A certain principle pervading the whole of Dionysian authorship has been commonly acknowledged by the readership of the works of a much-questioned author. That is the reality of participation that frames the ground upon which the dimensionality of Dionysian thinking flourishes: the Christological, the Liturgical, the Ecclesiological, the ontological aspect. The manifold of scholarly insights on this Christian, nonetheless Neoplatonic figure of the disputable author, fairly recognizes the participatory character of his thinking.
Nevertheless, there is a feature in Dionysius’ philosophical system that seems to be crucial. Except for some sporadic remarks -few comparing to the tremendous amount of relevant studies- and in spite of the elaborations of it by Saint Maximus the Confessor, it has not been paid an attention proportional to its centrality. This is the concept of fitness (ἐπιτηδειότης).
In this paper I shall attempt to study why and how the particular instantiations of fitness planted in the works of Dionysius are critical in building the grounds of participation. I will not ignore nor neglect relevant suggestions offered by Plotinus and Proclus. What I aim at is to investigate the frame of this concept in Dionysius, intending to argue for a Dionysian novelty consisting in the fact that the Areopagite grants fitness the privilege of becoming the regulatory principle for participation in the life of the divinity for all beings.

There are two ways that grant access to the reality of the Orthodox Christian mode of being, the ... more There are two ways that grant access to the reality of the Orthodox Christian mode of being, the knowledge about life and its source.
The one way expands through studying the infinite amount of primary sources we have been inherited from our fathers, the Church fathers. Their thinking reveals an unprecedented spiritual richness and intellectual depth. Among the merits of this way belongs the privilege of encountering a way of thinking that goes far beyond the limitations of the human reasoning, and the boundaries of the ontological categories. It is in this scope that cataphatic and apophatic language have been equally called forth to articulate a word on the origin and the source of divine eros.
The other way prerequisites our involvement to the experiential sphere that lies as the foundational ground upon which the aforementioned wisdom is flourishing. This way simply implies the participation in the life of the Saints, which constitutes a genuine imitation of the life of Christ, and could be recognized today as the ecclesiastical mode of being.
In this paper I shall refer to a person whose life has showed in the most distinct manner that the above two ways are mutually complementary, since they derive from the same source of divine eros. In this respect, it is a privilege to refer to a man who is no longer just a blessed ascetic figure of the Greek monastic life but also, since 2013, a declared Saint of the Orthodox Church. Indeed, Saint Porphyrios is neither a philosopher nor a theologian by profession but, as himself confirms, by παθὼν καὶ μαθὼν τὰ θεία. Thus, I consider himself as the most appropriate person to explicate how the goodness beyond being exceeds remoteness and enters into the spatially and timely being in order to redeem the beings by granting access to the One through Divine Eros.

Participation is that fundamental term and concept the entire Platonic language employs in order to ground and then secure the coherence of its ontological and metaphysical construction.
In this paper I attempt to discuss some facets participation in the good entails in Plotinus and Dionysius the Areopagite’s thinking on the topic, among which are the doctrine of receptivity according to the capacity of the recipient (ἐπιτηδειότης), the Plotinean two-side motion of procession and return (πρόοδος - ἐπιστροφὴ), as well as the Dionysian reception and use of the scheme of the internal and external activity of the substance.

Is there any relation between Plato’s political thinking and his cosmology – physical theory? If ... more Is there any relation between Plato’s political thinking and his cosmology – physical theory? If there is, how can it be outlined? Does the natural world constitute for Plato a leader thread, so that he can give shape to his ideal Republic (Politeia)? Which are the ratios that are shown? In which way does Plato derive ideas to form his political theory, through nature? Is the platonic state too much of an ideal to be considered utopian not only from philosophy scholars, but also from the majority of people? Or is it, instead, absolutely consistent to the platonic cosmological prototype that the Athenian philosopher creates in Timaeus to explain creation and being? Why does Plato in his mainly cosmological work decide to dedicate a noteworthy part to speak, primarily, about the achievements of the city where he himself and all those who converse with him live? The above questions outline the framework of the present work, which aims to locate and underline the principal –in our opinion- developments in Plato’s political thinking, in Timaeus and the Laws. Timaeus is widely known because it is primarilt a complete – although tough in understanding- expression of Plato’s cosmological and cosmogenic perceptions. Laws, and in particular the 10th book we are concerned in the current study, offers –after Plato’s Republic- a new perspective of his concern about the citizen, the city, and politics. The parallel approach of these two platonic works aims to point out the close relation of Plato’s political thinking with the greater knowledge of the construction and function of the world, and to highlight the holisticity of platonic thought.

This paper attempts to examine those conditions under which the Aristotelian notion of Eudaimonia... more This paper attempts to examine those conditions under which the Aristotelian notion of Eudaimonia could signify what Plato would have called perfect participation in the good. For Plato the good is the most divine reality. It is well known that Plato's theory of ideas has been hardly criticized by Aristotle. In his criticism Aristotle finds participation to be merely an empty word. Moreover, he seems to disagree with Plato's views on the relation between Metaphysics and Ethics. However, the way he conceives of the good in Nicomachean Ethics book I, and the identification of eudaimonia with the divine activity of theoria in book X seems to provide sufficient space to discuss a positive aspect of the hypothesis herein. The overall purpose is to show that despite the differences in part, the ultimate ethical good of Aristotle is identical to the sharing in the life of the metaphysical extreme principle of goodness.
