Materials and methods: Retrospective cross-sectional study of 7730 digital panoramic radiographs collected from Alexandria city in Egypt. The sample was examined for the presence of maxillary impacted canines. The radiographs were selected from the records of several private dental clinics and the archive of a radiographic center. Results: Among the panoramic radiographs analyzed, 229 radiographs had at least one maxillary canine impaction with a prevalence of 2.96%. The percentage of impacted canines in males was 36.24% and in females was 63.76%. A higher number of impactions were seen unilaterally 82.1% than bilaterally 17.9%. Right side impactions (42.79%) were less common than left side impactions (75.1%) in relation to the total number of radiographs with canine impactions. When including the unilateral impactions only, right...

Some patients might do “shopping” for both before deciding on an appropriate one. This study was designed to identify factors affecting the choice of patients or their guardians when choosing a practice. Methods: Methods: Methods: All participants to take the questionnaire were 18 years and above and if under 18 their guardians were asked to fill in the questionnaire. The questions where presented both in English with a translation to “Arabic”, the national language. The questionnaire consisted of 37 items covering various domains about the practitioner and his/her practice. The orthodontic offices were first contacted and those who accepted to participate in the study were paid a visit. For standardization, one of the authors was in charge of explaining the questionnaire to both the orthodontist and the staff. Responses were given on a visu...

Research paper thumbnail of Absence or Presence of Mid-Palatal Suture in Patients with Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate, (A Retrospective Study)

Background: The absence/presence of the mid-palatal suture in patients with cleft lip and palate ... more Background: The absence/presence of the mid-palatal suture in patients with cleft lip and palate has never been well investigated, although this is essential for the rapid palatal expansion and maxillary growth modification. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the mid-palatal suture is present in patients with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP). Methods: Twenty-three consecutive growing patients with UCLP who received cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and maxillary growth modification at the bone age of cervical vertebral maturation stage 2 (CVS2) from 2007-2013 were included. For each patient, the CBCT axial sections right before the treatment were examined for the prevalence of presence, extent of suture in maxilla, and maturation of mid-palatal suture at the basal and alveolar bone levels. The data were analysed statistically. Results: The prevalence of presence of mid-palatal suture was 100.00% at the basal-bone levels but decreased significantl...

Research paper thumbnail of The influence of low-level laser on orthodontic relapse in rats

MATERIAL AND METHODS Maxillary rat molars were moved mesially for 10 days. Animals were randomly assigned to group I (non-irradiated) or II (irradiation with LLLT). Appliances were removed, and the molars allowed to relapse for 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, or 21 days; rats in group II received LLLT according to a protocol. Bone density of periapical alveolar bone was measured using radiographs and Digora software. Dental supporting structures were examined histologically with haematoxylin and eosin and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase. RESULTS In both groups, first molar relapse was rapid 1 day after the end of active treatment; by 21 days percentage relapse was measured as 86.11 per cent in group I, and 72.22 per cent in group II. Osteoclast number was highest at the end of active OTM, and thereafter successively decreased d...

Large scalestudies using this technique and material had never been ventured in maxillary clefts. This prospective study aims to compare the grafting outcome of rhBMP-2in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients and the iliac crest graft treated cases, as evident by the eruption pattern of the cleft side permanent maxillary canine. Subject and Methods: A total of 16 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, with average age 10.5 years were selected and randomly allocated to two groups. Group A (n=8) received BMP-2 and Group B (n=8) underwent iliac traditional crest bone grafting of the alveolar cleft defect. A third control group was selected from the contralateral canines on the non-cleft side of the same patient Group C. Cone beam computed tomography scans before grafting and 11/2 years post-grafting were obtained. The data obtained from the CBCT scanning were imported into the OnDemand 3D sof...

Research paper thumbnail of Effect of Prophylactic Fluoride Application on Mechanical Properties of Different Types of Ceramic Brackets: An in Vitro Study

The differences in tie-wing strength of fluoridated and non-fluoridated ceramic brackets were investigated. Fracture strength testing was done for sixty ceramic brackets of 3 different brands (1 monocrystalline and 2 polycrystalline alumina brackets) with the Lloyd universal testing machine and 0.012 inch stainless steel ligature wire. Distoincisal tie-wings were tested to failure at a crosshead speed of 10 mm/min. According to the data obtained, fluoridated monocrystalline ceramic brackets showed statistically lower significant difference of tie-wing fracture strength than non-fluoridated monocrystalline brackets. No significant difference was shown between fluoridated and non-fluoridated polycrystalline brackets. Fluoride treatment had deteriorating effect on tie-wing fracture strengt...

Research paper thumbnail of Occlusal and Labial/Buccal Approaches for Measuring MesioDistal Width of Teeth on Chairside Digitally Scanned Models

Materials and methods: 3D intraoral digital models and stone models were made for each patient in a sample consisted of twenty randomly selected orthodontic patients. Mesiodistal teeth width and arch perimeter measurements on the digital models taken by occlusal and labial/buccal approaches were compared with those on the corresponding stone models. Results: There was no statistically significant difference, regarding the mesiodistal width measurement of all the teeth, between digital and stone models when using both measuring approaches. However, there was a significant increase in digital measurements than manual measurements for maxillary posterior segments and for maxillary total arch perimeter only when measured by occlusal approach. While all arch p...

Research paper thumbnail of Tongue pearl: A novel technique for treatment of an infant with median facial cleft and microcephaly

The appliance was custom designed and modified with a pearl-like acrylic structure attached to its lingual surface for pushing the extremely protruded tongue back to its normal position to facilitate anesthesia and surgical lip closure. Total treatment time was 5 weeks. Regaining normal tongue position, in turn, facilitated both intubation and extubation, preventing the postoperative respiratory distress the authors had experienced with similar cases.

This study was performed to evaluate low level laser therapy (LLLT) effect on bone density after diastema closure and to determine whether increased density will prevent diastema relapse.
