The surge in online learning has transformed education, impacting how acting is taught in Malaysi... more The surge in online learning has transformed education, impacting how acting is taught in Malaysian Art Schools. To ensure continual learning progress, diverse instructional strategies are employed, but the pandemic has disrupted traditional studio and in-thefield acting training. This study addresses the challenge of adapting fundamental acting education for lower secondary students at a Malaysian Art School in the context of remote learning. The conventional hands-on, in-person approach to teaching acting conflicts with the current demand for technology-infused learning, hindering cognitive growth. The absence of tailored Alternative Teaching Aids (ABM) for digital online learning further compounds the issue, emphasizing the need for a more engaging teaching method aligned with the school's curriculum. This project aims to evaluate the impact of interactive learning on the digital acting teaching approach within the existing syllabus. It seeks to provide teachers and basic theatre acting coaches with a comprehensive foundational acting module that embraces digital interactivity, catering to the needs of students at the Malaysian Art School and beyond. The study employs a hybrid teaching approach, merging traditional, recorded, and interactive mediums to develop a module based on established theatre textbook references. By integrating technology into the teaching process, the module addresses the limitations of the inperson model, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment. The results of this study hold potential significance for both the educational and industry realms. By incorporating interactive elements, the developed module not only enriches acting education at the Malaysian Art School but also provides a framework for similar institutions globally. The indirect technological applications of this training module extend beyond school settings, impacting various related sectors and contributing to the advancement of interactive acting learning systems worldwide.

She started singing professionally at 13. For a legendary singer of her stature, unfortunately, Saloma's contribution to the music industry in this country has not been properly documented, appreciated, and upheld. It is not known how many albums Saloma had released in the first 10 years of her career, as EMI Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the local distributor of artists signed to EMI Singapore Pte Ltd. As a result, most albums before 1970 were not listed.

Theatre productions in Malaysia have been enacted in many performance spaces. A mega show will be... more Theatre productions in Malaysia have been enacted in many performance spaces. A mega show will be performed on a cutting-edge technology stage, such as Istana Budaya. Some may also prefer an intimate room such as Stor Teater Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). These two productions are different when we discuss their visions in producing theatre. Their audience members also come from other types of people based on demographic, economy, and education. The paper aims to discuss the issues and viewership differences between both productions. This paper also aimed to compare the operational and production of both theatres - types of shows, technological possibilities and how productions solve limitations of space scale using creative performance concepts to perform a play. The researchers are focusing on contemporary theatre production from 2010 until today; the research may open a new spectrum of studies in making theatres in Malaysia. Using library research and qualitative in-depth interviews with theatre producers, managers, and performers will assist the research in finding relevant information about the studies. Alternative audience members mostly view small scale theatres. The audience members have more critical ideas and the desire to get more intimate experiences. In comparison, the show in Istana Budaya offers
mainstream performances suitable for the masses since Istana Budaya is a national theatre in Malaysia. Therefore, the business model is also different in marketing and production.

Hatta Azad Khan is a renowned Malaysian dramatist who always addresses social issues in his writings. Mayat (1978) is one of his prominent writings that uses this technique by questioning capitalism and people, innuendo and money, and distrust using humour in the dramatic text. Post-1969, Sino-Malay sectarian violence, also known as the 13 May incident in Malaysia, has presented arts differently compared to early Malaysia's independence. Most writings in the post-13 May incident used symbolism and did not address issues literally. The writings also apply to Hatta's writings. The sensitivity of the racial tension has to be appropriately addressed since it resulted in a declaration of Malaysia's national emergency in the same year. Muzikal berkaitan tokoh politik di Istana Budaya telah mendapat tempat sejak 2007 ketika Malaysia... more Muzikal berkaitan tokoh politik di Istana Budaya telah mendapat tempat sejak 2007 ketika Malaysia menyambut ulang tahun kemerdekaannya yang ke-50. Perkara ini difikirkan bersesuaian oleh kepimpinan negara pada waktu itu. Pertambahan jumlah karya muzikal tokoh politik ini memberi indikasi bahawa satu trend baharu telah terhasil dan bergerak seiring dengan zaman kegemilangan muzikal dari syarikat produksi Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina. Sambutan terhadap pementasan berkaitan tokoh politik mula menurun pada tahun 2012 atas beberapa faktor. Dalam kajian berkaitan muzikal Perdana Menteri ini, Tun Siti Hasmah the Musical (2012) tidak disenaraikan kerana beliau tidak memegang jawatan sebagai menteri. Penyelidikan kualitatif ini memberi tumpuan kepada muzikal tokoh politik sebagai tema. Beberapa faktor membuat persembahan dan bentuk persembahan muzikal Perdana Menteri dianalisis berdasarkan maklumat jadual pementasan Istana Budaya di antara tahun 2007 dan 2011. Penyelidikan ini bertujuan untuk mendokumentasikan persembahan sebegini dan akan membantu dalam penyelidikan lebih lanjut di masa depan. Penurunan penonton pada tahun 2012 dan tema baru dalam persembahan teater di Istana Budaya juga dilihat dalam kajian ini.

Muslim society in Malaysia acknowledge the existence of Shafi'i madhhab since the spread of Islam... more Muslim society in Malaysia acknowledge the existence of Shafi'i madhhab since the spread of Islam in this region. This madhhab had influenced the society's thoughts and practices through the traditional education system, literatures, laws and the local scholars. Basically, Muslim society in Malaysia are bound by the opinion of Shafi'i madhhab as declared in the enactment of the states. Nevertheless, there are rooms for another madhhabs to be selected and practiced in Malaysia if certain issues are related to public interest (maslahah). On the other hand, the use of madhhabs, talfiq and takhayyur have become a polemic among the scholars regarding its necessity and validity. Hence, this article attempts to estimate to what extent the practices of Muslim society in Malaysia in devotion aspect are still bound by the opinions of the Shafi'i madhhab. The related issues that will be discussed are ablution (taharah), prayer, fasting and zakat. To obtain the data needed, questionnaires had been distributed to selected respondents with religious education background from Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah, Johor and Kuala Lumpur. These states represent north, east, south and middle part of Malaysia. Besides that, interview with several informant also had been conducted.

Kajian seni persembahan Melanau banyak memberi fokus kepada perubatan seperti bebayoh dan juga tarian seladai. Kajian mengenai objek budaya pula banyak melibatkan dakan ataupun belum. Melanau mempunyai persembahan bertopeng dibuat daripada pokok rumbia yang digunakan untuk pelbagai tujuan. Dalam kajian ini, topeng tersebut dinamakan topeng sagu Melanau. The trend of publishing political musicals in Istana Budaya has been popular since 2007 when Mala... more The trend of publishing political musicals in Istana Budaya has been popular since 2007 when Malaysia celebrated its 50th anniversary of independence. Istana Budaya has at least one musical of any politician since then. Normally, the politicians are former Prime Ministers and renowned ministers prior Malaysia's independence in 1957. The first performance in Istana Budaya which represented a politician as a theme was Muzikal Cheng Lock (2007) followed by Muzikal Tun Abdul Razak (2009), Muzikal Tun Mahathir (2010), and Muzikal Tun Mahathir 2 (2011). In 2012, Lawak Ke Der has changed the trend with comic performance and put an end to politician musical. Copying, repetition, appreciation, action and reaction are the elements included in the techniques practised in acting. This study is fully dedicated to the implementation of dialogue pronunciation through improvisation technique which is often highlighted for the actors and actresses in acting. However, what goes unnoticed is the fact that the way a teacher delivers a lesson in a classroom has similarities in function and role as a stage performer. Voice is the main instrument which needs to be used during the whole lesson or performance. The problem statement in this study can be seen from the inability of the teacher to apply an effective dialogue projection technique in their lesson, causing a somber and gloomy classroom. Apart from that, understanding the teaching content alone is not enough if dialogue pronunciation is unclear throughout the lesson. Therefore, this study aims to give exposure on the techniques and introduction to voice mechanism so that the lesson can be delivered more effectively and interesting by the teachers. The process of this study leads towards qualitative form guided by observation and open interviews to review the current teaching methods as well as using suitable library and database references. The result of this study shows the importance of understanding the improvisation in dialogue pronunciation in teaching which can be implemented consciously in teaching and learning process in school.

Matinya Seorang Pahlawan (1992) was one of Malay language theatrical performances that has been p... more Matinya Seorang Pahlawan (1992) was one of Malay language theatrical performances that has been performed overseas for non-Malay speakers in SOAS, London. Therefore, surtitles has been introduced in theatre world to overcome the language barrier issue. However, the production has not using surtitles on stage due to some reasons and budged constraint was one of them. This may be difficult for the viewers since foreign performances are alien for the audience members who do not speak the language and do not understand the culture. The research analyses factors and effects on avoiding surtitles on the production. A number of people that involved in the production-theatre makers and viewers were interviewed and documentations and writings about the production are also reviewed in order to get a deeper result on the research. This qualitative research used triangular method to identify and conclude either the production has achieved its main goal to promote Malay language and culture to the world or otherwise.

Selain daripada menjadi satu ritual untuk pembersihan melalui pemberian kepada Ipok, Kaul juga boleh dilihat sebagai satu seni persembahan bagi etnik Melanau. Kajian seni persembahan Melanau banyak memberi fokus kepada perubatan seperti bebayoh dan juga tarian seladai. Kajian mengenai objek budaya pula banyak melibatkan dakan ataupun belum. Melanau mempunyai persembahan bertopeng dibuat daripada pokok rumbia yang digunakan untuk pelbagai tujuan. Dalam kajian ini, topeng tersebut dinamakan topeng sagu Melanau. Fungsi budaya berdasarkan kepada tradisi dan kesan moderniti dibincangkan dalam kajian ini. Ini dibuat untuk melihat perbandingan antara fungsi asal bertopeng, perubahan konsep bertopeng, dan juga penyesuaian budaya bertopeng ini dalam kebudayaan moden. Untuk menjalankan kajian ini, kajian lapangan telah dibuat di Mukah sebelum Pesta Kaul dan juga semasa Pesta Kaul. Pengenalan Ritual ialah perkara utama yang perlu dibincangkan dalam seni persembahan tradisi masyarakat Borneo kerana kebanyakan seni persembahan Borneo berasaskan kepada ritual yang mempunyai pelbagai tujuan seperti perubatan, peniruan terhadap persekitaran dan juga untuk memberi keseimbangan kepada dunia realiti dan mistik. Bertopeng dalam masyarakat Borneo mempunyai kesemua perkara ini tadi. Peniruan terhadap haiwan wujud dalam elemen topeng hudok manakala fungsi perubatan topeng terdapat dalam kebudayaan Bidayuh untuk mencari roh yang sesat untuk dikembalikan kepada pesakit. Ini merupakan fungsi asal bertopeng yang diamalkan oleh masyarakat Borneo. Namun begitu, perbahan telah berlaku dengan kehadiran dunia moden apabila praktikaliti kebanyakan kebudayaan tradisi telah berubah mengikut kesesuaian semasa. Walaupun masih banyak tradisi yang dikekalkan oleh masyarakat namun, nilai tradisi ini sudah berbeza. Mengambil contoh penggunaan sape dalam muzik Borneo. Tradisi asalnya ialah untuk tujuan ritual dan tidak boleh dimainkan oleh perempuan. Dunia moden telah menyebabkan tradisi ini berbeza walaupun masih terdapat praktis ritual dalam permainan sape. Perkara ini juga memberi kesan kepada budaya bertopeng dalam masyarakat Borneo. Diperhatikan bahawa, kebanyakan budaya bertopeng tradisi ini telah tidak diamalkan kerana pelbagai faktor. Budaya bertopeng untuk tujuan perubatan sudah semakin berkurangan kerana kehadiran cara perubatan moden. Begitu juga budaya bertopeng untuk tujuan peniruan persekitaran kerana kehadiran topeng moden yang dikenali melalui budaya popular seperti karektor komik dan filem yang popular seperti Batman yang diinspirasi daripada kelawar. Peranan bertopeng secara tradisi ialah sebagai satu penghubung secara visual untuk menggambarkan wujudnya komunikasi antara dunia manusia dengan alam lain. Kebiasannya, aktiviti ritual ini dilakukan oleh bomoh yang mempunyai kebolehan untuk berkomunikasi dengan makhluk dalam alam mistik. Permintaan bomoh ini biasanya untuk mendamaikan kedua-dua belah pihak melalui perbincangan dan juga pelbagai cara persembahan selepas bomoh ini tadi menggunakan topeng. Tarian hantu dalam masyarakat Dayak yang mempunyai budaya bertopeng dipercayai boleh membantu komunikasi antara bomoh dan juga alam mistik. Untuk tidak mengganggu keadaan perkampungan, persembahan ini akan dijalankan semasa kanak-kanak telah tidur pada waktu tengah malam (Kassim Ali, 1983). Dapat diperhati bahawa nilai kudus wujud dalam kebudayaan bertopeng ini. Selain daripada untuk mengelakkan kanak-kanak daripada menjadi risau dan takut, persembahan yang dijalankan pada waktu tengah malam ini juga menjadi satu persembahan yang tidak dapat dimainkan tanpa melalui proses ritual yang betul.
