It is a type of investment that considers the environmental aspects within the context of rigorous financial analysis. Accordingly, this study attempts to identify factors influencing Muslims’ intention to adopt green investment. The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) framework was adopted which include attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, knowledge, reputation and religious values. The data for the study were collected through self-administered questionnaires using a six point Likert Scale among 270 respondents in the Klang Valley area. The study adopted a qualitative method where the information on the issues of Islamic LCs was gathered throughout interviews with different bankers closely involved in LC issuance from 12 Islamic banks in Malaysia. The results indicate that there are three vital issues related to LCs offered by Islamic banks which lead to Shariah non-compliance issues. The issues revolve around the conversion of LC Wakalah (agency) to LC Murabahah (cost-plus), the existence of a sale contract between the customer and exporter and lastly the title of goods stated in the bill of lading. The findings recommend several solutions in relation to LCs within the underlying Shariah contracts to ensure that their operation compl...

As far as trade and commerce is concerned, al-Qur'an has indeed pointed out that trade and commerce is made permissible in order to develop human being so that they will not suffer in poverty and difficulties. Contemporary Management and Science Issues in the Halal Industry, 2019

The sustainability of productive economy should also be supported by the Islamic banking industry... more The sustainability of productive economy should also be supported by the Islamic banking industry, through the realization of Shariah principles, especially in promoting trade and the halal economy. Trade financing is one of the main banking facilities offered by Islamic banks in Malaysia. However, as of 2016, Islamic trade finance represents only 3.4% of total trade, and less than one third of the overall trade finance of the banking system. Apparently, the Central Bank of Malaysia aspires to increase a 10% growth in Islamic trade finance of the total trade, locally and internationally, in the next three years. Therefore, this study intends to highlight the bankers’ opinion in relation to the roles of the Central Bank of Malaysia, particularly in facilitating the growth of Islamic trade finance in Malaysia. Furthermore, this study also identifies the reason for the slow growth of Islamic trade finance in Malaysia. This study adopted the qualitative method where interviews were conducted with bankers from three main banks that offer Islamic trade finance facility. Consequently, it is suggested that the Central Bank of Malaysia needs to promote the growth of Islamic trade finance by providing more incentives to the banks and customers, predominantly in terms of the pricing, stamp duty remission and rebate, and some other forms of reinforcement. Additionally, the Central Bank of Malaysia has to encourage all the conventional banks which have Islamic banking windows to apply “Islamic first” policy to support the growth of Islamic trade finance.

Even though the development of Islamic banking in the southern hemisphere is not as rapid as in the northern hemisphere, this does not imply that small western countries such as New Zealand are not interested in this niche sector. The increasing number of the Muslim population in New Zealand, which grew to 70,000 by 2018, shows that there may be a potential demand for Islamic financial services. This perception study which is part of a larger feasibility study uses a quantitative approach to examine the perception level of New Zealand residents towards their intention to use Islamic banking. Using purposive sampling technique, 300 questionnaires were distributed to potential banking customers, irrespective of religion, residing in New Zealand. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to capture whether the variables based on the theory of reasoned action including knowledge, religious values, subjective norms and attitude had an effect on the New Zealand residents' intention to use Islamic banking. It was interestingly noted that only attitude had a significant effect on how New Zealand residents perceive their intention to use Islamic banking in their daily lives. Overall, this study has ascertained the level of perception towards their intention to use Islamic banking among potential customers in New Zealand. The results of this study can be used as a framework for the setting up of an Islamic banking system in New Zealand.
