Based on case studies linked to different territories in the extensive Iberian area, we look at these processes from different scales of approach. We begin with the complex and heterogeneous definition of town models to arrive at an analysis of the territories and ways in which the oppida expanded, by analysing and categorising the settlement and territorial organisation patterns. In particular, we propose an update of the settlement model typology, taking into account the nucleation and spatial structure variables, as well as the presence and/or absence of defined settlement rankings.

This research forms part of the studies of this conflict in the Upper Guadalquivir, the main objective of which is to develop an interdisciplinary methodology for its analysis and interpretation. It also seeks to understand the impact and consequences of the conflict on the local communities, focusing on the evaluation of the social and cultural transformations that took place after the Roman victory and during the wider Roman conquest. The tasks of photointerpretation, digital terrain modelling, geophysical surveying and archaeological surveying and excavation, along with a critical review of the classical texts, have revealed a complex situation in the historical trajectory of Iliturgi, characterised by the presence of two different locations for its capital. During the 6th and 3rd centuries BC it would have been on the hill known as Cerro de la Muela. However, at the end of the 2nd century BC, following a profound demographic and social crisis in the territory, it was on another hill, Cerro Maquiz, where it was laid out according to the urban guidelines of the Roman world and acquired its own legal status and citizenship rights.

In this work we analyze the evolution of Cástulo’s territory from his conformation up to his disarticulation, as a consequence of the Second Punic War. We analyze this process from different scales, but always from the perspective of the local factor. The relationship of the information proceeding from the political territory supraoppidum, the changes documented in the territorial sanctuaries and the regional dynamics help to complete the map of the transformation of the High Guadalquivir.

It is a key example
for understanding how Attic imagery was redefined in the Iberian context, intermingling with tradition and generating original compositions.

We present an interdisciplinary analysis of a past temporary paleo-wetland located at an important junction between the valleys of the Rivers Guadalquivir and Guadalimar in the province of Jaén (Eastern Andalusia, Spain). We applied a high-resolution protocol to identify the paleo-wetland used for ritual purposes during the Iron Age. Based on archaeological excavations and analyses (soil micromorphology, pollen and phytoliths analyses, optically stimulated luminescence [OSL] datings, and other techniques), we found a palaeosoil formed in a wetland environment active during the Late Holocene, dating back to the 9th century AD

Employing a traverse perspective, we focus on a variety of prehistoric and protohistoric case studies from the Iberian Peninsula as well as from the ancient Mediterranean in general. Our proposal follows three principal lines of research: first, we reflect on the stereotypical images of prehistory which have produced profoundly distorted models of the past. Second, we examine the question of corporeal identities based on a group of selected burials. Finally, using bioarchaeological data, the third line is a comprehensive overview of social status, level of care, and visible changes in female bodies within the context of their specific life cycle. We offer a general reflection which allows us to present the current state of research that has been undertaken by the group Past Women. This covers the study of corporeal identities in the past as a fundamental analytical basis to analyze social behavior and the construction of collective identities. It also helps generate new narratives, collective and inclusive, based on rigorous research.

The aim is to differentiate the contexts in
battlefields –including the case study of Baecula and sieges. For the latter, Scipio the African’s siege of Iliturgi in 206 BCE has been chosen as a practical case for comparison and experimentation. We have used the techniques of photointerpretation, digital terrain modelling, geophysical prospection and archaeological excavation, together with a critical review of the historiographic and archaeological background with reference to the classical texts that tell us of the outstanding role of Iliturgi in the second Punic war. All these have led us to suggest a different location for this oppidum in the Alto Guadalquivir region that is traditionally believed to have been located at Cerro Maquiz. We propose two different locations: the first on the hill known as Cerro de la Muela between the 6th and 3rd centuries BCE and the second on Cerro Maquiz from the 2nd century BCE, both forming part of the same
historical process.

It is an open-air site with a 3rd century BCE votive deposit. A large part of the interest in this case study lies in the application of a strongly interdisciplinary protocol which combines archaeological excavations, systematic magnetic micro-surveying and combined analyses (soil micromorphol-ogy, pollen and phytolith analyses, OSL datings, 3D ground-penetrating radar studies and metallographic analysis). This protocol has made it possible to document the ritual dynamics involving this small area of paleo-wetland. The site is placed at a key point on the ritual itinerary between the town of Baecula (Santo Tomé, Jaén) and the sanctuary of La Cueva de la Lobera in Castellar (Jaén). The present study re-veals the complexity of the religious landscapes in a territory similar to that of Cástulo (Linares, Jaén) in the 4th and 3rdcenturies BCE, in which the natural landmarks with strong specific cultural significances played an important role

In this case, we aim to analyse this activity as a productive function, endowing it with the value it merits as part of the so-called maintenance activities, linking it not only to the social sphere, but also to those of the economy and culture. In particular, this article focuses on the analysis of hitherto unpublished complexes and contexts associated with this Iberian oppidum. This analysis is crucial since the empirical base is fundamental for inferring interpretations associated with these activities. The analysis of the various selected archaeological contexts provides information about the wide-ranging economic and social dimensions this activity acquired during this period.

habitados del I milenio a.n.e.

Taking into account the scarcity of analysis focused on ritual mobility from an archaeological perspective and the abuse of historical explanations especially exported from the Classical Archaeology, we propose a session that incorporates an archaeological and methodological focus to the debate. Our aim is contribute to enlarge the theoretical and conceptual framework for the analysis of symbolic landscapes and ritual mobility.

Some natural places, such as caves, shelters and rocks, usually have intrinsic sensorial power which helps to create a symbolic atmosphere shared across time and space. When analysing transversely these contexts in the Ancient Mediterranean, from Bronze Age to Classical times, coincidences start emerging. The material record connected to the cultural and social values is increasingly shedding light on the reconstruction of these practices, their performers and their audience. Taking the rocky space as a common element in ritual places, the main aim of this session is to examine the rituality which was experienced in caves, shelters and rocks in the Ancient Mediterranean from a broad perspective and over a long period of time. We propose to discuss this topic by referring to different aspects: research of repeated practices, the meaning of places anchoring the memory in the landscape , the ritual journeys or the sensitive and emotional experiences perceived during the whole performance , among others. Different approaches and methodology which can enrich research on ritual archaeology are welcome. With this in mind, we seek contributors that present their study cases or theoretical contributions from different locations situated in the Mediterranean area from Bronze Age to Classical times. Different periods, different people and different cultures and beliefs which share one common link: rocky natural as symbolic places.
