The questionnaire used was translated from the work of Niklas Gericke et al. (2018), some questions elaborated on the basis of UNESCO's definition of sustainable development, aimed at knowing the awareness that people show towards sustainability. In the proposal of these authors, knowledge, attitudes and environmental, social and economic behavior were measured. In our study, whose representative sample has been 3rd grade students in primary school teacher, of the Jaume I University, the same parameters have been used. The results we found were positive to the extent that we showed that the sample has an acceptable knowledge, as well as an implication and responsibility on the subject. As conclusions, we can highlight the need to include the subject in teacher training, with the aim of improvin...

In this sense, the training of business studentsfuture entrepreneurs and managers-in these topics is important in order to prepare them to assume responsible roles in society. A relevant question in this area lies in knowing the extent to which students actually believe that business studies should educate about ethical and CSR issues. However, business education literature lacks data on students' attitudes towards such education. Along this line, the main objective of this paper is to analyse the attitudes of students toward the role of business education in preparing them to make decisions affecting social needs. Our study is based in a sample of 124 Spanish undergraduate business students at the Universitat Jaume I (Spain). We use the BERSI (Business Education's Role in addressing Social Issues) scale which incorporates questions dealing with the value of student learning about awareness of and solutions to social problems, civic leadership, discrimination, service, and general CSR issues. Firstly, the findings strongly imply that students at this university are quite positively disposed to the idea that business education should encompass substantial coverage of social issues. Students tended far more to agree than disagree with statements in the BERSI scale. Secondly, we find that there are differences between students' attitudes toward business education's role in addressing social issues and what this education really is. Specifically, the values of these students' attitudes are higher that their perceptions regarding that the business education is. These results imply the need to incorporate into the business studies more social contents. Furthermore, gender was found to have a limited effect upon students' attitudes toward business education's role in addressing social issues.

Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 740 citizens living near a petrochemical complex in Tarragona (Spain). The results were analysed using structural equation modelling. Findings Based on institutional theory, the key findings of the study are that CPA and political CSR are differently related to citizens’ trust in companies. The results also verify that the negative relationship (between CPA and trust) outweighs the positive one (between political CSR and trust). Practical implications The lack of fit between political CSR and CPA in the complex analysed suggests that firms are neglecting approaches shared by the...

However, the increasing problems facing society are highlighting the need to change this logic. In this context, a growing body of literature is developing around what are known as hybrid organisations, entities characterised by their combination of a social and/or environmental mission with the pursuit of economic benefit. This research uses a descriptive case study approach in order to examine how a Spanish winery—Celler la Muntanya—has implemented a sustainable business model to create positive social and environmental change. The agricultural sector is receiving increasing attention in the sustainability field because of its impact on society and the territory. In addition, agricultural activity generates tensions between social/environmental dimensions—such as the preservation of ecosystems and...

This research contributes to the literature on the management of firm-local community relationshi... more This research contributes to the literature on the management of firm-local community relationships in polluting industrial agglomerations. Taking as reference a previous quantitative study on residents' perceptions of economic benefits and risk in the vicinity of two Spanish petrochemical complexes (Castellón and Tarragona), the aim of this paper is to analyse how companies in the two areas have built and manage, individually and collectively, their relations with the local community, while assessing the extent to which a more committed management has resulted in a more favourable perception by the public. For this purpose, we conducted indepth interviews with managers of the main companies on the two sites. The results show different patterns of behaviour by firms in the two industrial agglomerations. Companies located in the area of Tarragona, where citizens' perceptions were more favourable, have historically been more committed to building stronger socioeconomic links with the local community and encouraging a sense of community, and to making greater efforts to engage local residents through a process of dialogue. Moreover, the existence of a collective strategy in Tarragona, coordinated through a local industry association, has also played an important role in facilitating the industry's relationship with the local community. The findings of the study suggest the need to consider the industrial agglomeration and the firms' collective actions in research on relationships with the local community alongside actions by individual companies.

The training of business students in this area is an important part of their preparation to assume responsible roles in society. This paper analyzes students' attitudes to the role of social issues in business education and to companies' responsibilities (about what a well-run company is). Findings show that students define a well-run company from a stakeholder perspective. Furthermore, the students surveyed claimed that social issues are not adequately covered in their current business studies.

For this reason, their long-term involvement with this mode of transport will be conditioned by their expectations concerning the future opportunistic behaviors of their new suppliers, the shipping companies. According to transaction cost analysis, this article argues that a road transport firm’s level of uncertainty about the future behavior of a shipping company can be reduced by two main factors: the shipping company’s reputation and the road transport firm’s trust (in this study we distinguish the two dimensions or motives of trust: honesty and benevolence). Using the partial least squares (PLS) approach, and data from a sample of 106 “road transport firm–shipping company” relationships, we estimated a model to analyze the joint effect of trust and reputation dimensions on the long-term orientation of international road transport firms in their relationships with shipping companies.

The current legislation has forced hazardous companies to improve their communication policy with the local community, but this entails the difficulty that each individual has a different need for information. This study considers the main antecedents of need for information to explain these differences. The paper analyses, to our knowledge for the first time, the direct influence of personal beliefs about environmental issues on the individual’s need for information. The research focused on the residents (992) of an area near to a petrochemical complex. The results, derived from the structural equation modelling analysis, confirmed the influence of environmental beliefs, trust in companies and negative affective response on the need for information. In the light of these results, we recommend that the companies of the complex develop a risk communication policy based on personal environmental beliefs, in order to understand the public’s concerns and their needs for risk information. Finally, the analysed companies need to see risk communication as a long-term and ongoing process that involves active dialogue and enables stakeholders’ participation, with the aim of establishing a communication network.

Perceived risk of environmental threats often translates into psychological stress with a wide ra... more Perceived risk of environmental threats often translates into psychological stress with a wide range of effects on health and well-being. Petrochemical industrial complexes constitute one of the sites that can cause considerable pollution and health problems. The uncertainty around emissions results in a perception of risk for citizens residing in neighboring areas, which translates into anxiety and physiological stress. In this context, social trust is a key factor in managing the perceived risk. In the case of industrial risks, it is essential to distinguish between trust in the companies that make up the industry, and trust in public institutions. In the context of a petrochemical industrial complex located in the port of Castellón (Spain), this paper primarily discusses how trust-both in the companies located in the petrochemical complex and in the public institutions-affects citizens' health risk perception. The research findings confirm that while the trust in companies negatively affects citizens' health risk perception, trust in public institutions does not exert a direct and significant effect. Analysis also revealed that trust in public institutions and health risk perception are essentially linked indirectly (through trust in companies).

As a result of this integration, an industrial district can be identified as a network of dense and strong ties. According to this description, industrial districts benefit from fine-grained and tacit knowledge exchanges and from norms and values promoting cooperative strategies. Consequently, these characteristics benefit individual firms for the exploitation of existent technologies and opportunities. However, using the same logic, these characteristics might not be suitable for exploring new technologies and opportunities. Nevertheless, we suggest that proximity facilitates the creation of third-party relationships, such as those between firms and regional institutions or other regional intermediaries. These institutions provide individual firms in the district with indirect links to sources of knowled...

Abstract At present, the tourism sector is undergoing major structural changes. The development of tourism has a very important role for the local sustainable development, which becomes a key and unavoidable aspect in the current tourism planning and management for a more responsible local development. The human-nature imbalance, on a global and local scale, requires strengthening the role and capacity of localities in the implementation of programs that allow us to approach more sustainable territories. However, this research has a potential to focus the evaluation of the municipality of Staoueli and ability to integrate the process of sustainable tourism development on the west coast of Algiers, this through the adoption of a method of strategic analysis to the tourist destination of Staoueli situated in Algiers community of Algeria's country, and its Role in local sustainable development of the municipality and propose better actions. keywords: Local development, sustainable development, Tourism development, sustainable tourism, propose improvement actions.
