Interesting encounter in London [27 May 2012|07:38pm]
Spotted in a pond on a "nature reserve garden" in a small park near my house in London - I think this explains why I've never seen any amphibians in there. I was a bit astonished, given the occasional coldness of the British climate, but it's probably several years since we had enough sustained cold weather to freeze the pond:Shell length about 4", I think. Almost certainly a red-eared terrapin.

Petition against the UP cat killer [04 May 2009|01:10am]
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/102/Justice-for-TengtengJustice for TengtengTarget: Faculty of the University of the Philippines, Diliman There are over half a million stray animals in the Philippines, and this is the story of just one of them. Tengteng was a month-old stray kitten who lived precariously on the grounds of the University of the Philippines at Diliman. Those who knew her spoke of a kitten who benefited from random acts of kindness including handouts of food, water, even a new collar to make herself look pretty. She enjoyed fleeting but happy moments with students who gave her a scratch or two, a tummy rub, and pats on her head. The only known photograghs of Tengten are the ones you see on this site. One can say that Tengteng was not as hard up as other strays in the Philippines, but she was without a regular source of food, a home and a family to protect her. Tengteng, like all animals, was God's child. But her life came to an abrupt end when on April 13th a second year physics student named Joseph Carlo Candare took her life and bragged about it on the web. On his blog entry for that day, Mr. Candare mockingly called Tengteng's death " an accidental Crime." However, by other accounts, Tengteng's killing was a deliberate and blood-thirsty attack fueled by Mr. Candare's visceral and sadistic hatred of cats. How much hate, you might ask?Mr. Candare was described as taking a running start, leaping into the air, and then landing on Tengteng with the full force of his weight and momentum. Tengteng, who could not have weighed more than two pounds, was crushed under the grown man's weight. This was a conscious act, and Mr. Candare had ample opportunities to change his mind. Whatever life was left in Tengteng's body, the last few ounces of strength she had, enabled her to seek shelter in a hovel where she ultimately died moments later, alone. The imagery is horrifying, but we have been spared the deathly sounds that must have been blood-curdling. The agonizing scream of a kitten, the crushing of her bones, the taunting of the victor over the vanquished, it was a triumphant moment for one but unnecessarily tragic for another. Why should we care? Some have argued that we care too much about a kitten who did not belong to anyone. Some said tha there are many strays; why care about this one? All animals deserve respect. When we disrespect an animal, that says more about us than the animal. It is not how many animals are abused, but it is the knowledge that a most heinous crime was committed on a defenseless and sentient being that behooves us to act. Such acts, however singular, offends our sense of decency and righteousness. If there is one abused animal, then that is one too many. When we are confronted by cruelty, we must address it. Acts of abject cruelty towards animals, like Tengteng's killing, are simply unacceptable. It is up to the enlightened and the compassionate to stand up and speak in behalf of those on the receiving end of humankind's brute force. Why take my word for it?You do not have to. I am reproducing Mr. Candare's blog entry for your perusal. Here, you can read his own words, his self-confession as a serial killer of cats, his disingenuous pang of conscience, and his not-so-veiled threat to kill more in a month ( English translation in brackets) : "An Accidental Crime. First day sa supercon. Lunch time came. On our way out of old NIP I saw the cat I almost killed last Tuesday. Now everyone knows I hate cats. It's an unexplainable feeling towards them. Like some internal hatred. Hindi ko talaga alam kung bakit pero anumang pagpipigil sa sarili ay hindi sapat upang mapangibabawan ang panggigil ko sa mga pusa. [ I don't really know why my self-control is not enough to overcome my hatred of cats ] I pulled it on its tail and threw it. Then like some pro wrestler I jumped on it and my feet landed on it's torso. Slam! Felt good! But the cat didn't die, well not yet. It ran for its life and just as I was about to catch up on it somebody yelled: " Pwede bang pabayaan mo yung pusa?!" [ Can you leave the cat alone? ]. It was instant and involuntary. I stopped on my tracks. Nobody ever stopped me when assaulting cats. Well I guess there's always a first time for everything. The cat got away. Or at least that's what i thought. So we went to lunch Mel, Jayson, Tracy and me. After lunch, balik na sa kung anumang naiwang gawain [ we went back to whatever unfinished work we had ]. Then Tracy and Mel told me " Hui Jc napatay mo yung pusa" [ Hey, JC, you killed that cat ]. Hours later, habang abala sa XRD [ while busy at XRD ], a guy came in. Tanong niya: " Sinong pumatay dun sa pusa?" [ He asked, who killed that cat? ] Bang! Dat was me boi. Guilty as charged. I didn't see it die pero sabi ni Myles [ but Myles said ] it coughed up blood or at least something like that daw. Didn't realize I gave it a fatal hit. This isn't the first time I've killed a cat but this time it's different. It didn't occur to me back then that the cat had a leash. So I think somebody owns it. Well it's very well loved in NIP from what I heard and I just ended it's life. So there you go I'm sorry. And I wont be striking another one for maybe about a month. It feels good when your beating it(a cat) up but you suddenly feel something strange when it turns off permanently. That's how I feel right now. And maybe for the next days. Dang, am I a cat serial killer? "To Whom Should We Appeal? We are appealing to the high officials of the University of the Philippines at Diliman (U.P.) namely Dr. Sergio Cao, Chancellor of UP, Dr. Arnel Salvador, Director of the National Institute of Physics at UP, and to Dr. Caesar Saloma, Dean of the College of Science UP. These gentlemen, in their respective capacities, have the authority to set things right at the university. They can condemn, reject, and punish those who practice animal cruelty within the ranks of the university. They are gatekeepers to the long and illustrious history of the university. The conduct and safety of the student body are under their purview. We, therefore, are calling upon these gentlemen to apply the only just and appropriate punishment for Mr. Candare which is immediate expulsion from the university and to assist in seeking proper medical attention for Mr. Candare. I am asking for one thousand signatures. If you agree with the spirit of this petition, please sign it and offer your opinion for the benefit of these learned gentlemen. I will post updates when new developments occur. I thank you for helping engender a more compassionate Filipino society.Addenda: There were questions about criminal charges. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is in the process of gathering affidavits from eye-witnesses. Yes, Mr. Candare violated the provisions of the Philippine Animal Welfare Act, Republic Act 8485. PAWS' volunteer lawyer will be mapping our their legal case against Mr. Candare.05/02/09 I had Mr. Candare's name as John C. Candare in the initial post because he presented himself as such on another blog, but someone corrected me. His real name is Joseph Carlo Candare.05/02/09 You may express your outrage but please no personal threats against Mr. Candare. I have to submit this petition to UP officials, and I want it fair and clean. Substantive comments will greatly help the impact of this petition. Thanks. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/102/Justice-for-Tengteng

SSPCA vs. RSPCA [10 Feb 2009|12:54pm]
http://scottishspca.createsend4.com/T/ViewEmail/r/0B71A3890D71333B/6D011B2B0AE9E6832540EF23F30FEDED#92AABBB562110EC3The RSPCA won't save RosieThe Scottish SPCA has challenged the RSPCA to stop stealing food from the mouths of Scotland’s defenceless animals and tell the truth to the Scottish public.Scotland’s animal welfare charity has launched an unprecedented campaign calling for the English and Welsh charity to admit it can’t save a single animal in Scotland.Chief Executive Stuart Earley said, “Many people do not know that the RSPCA does not rescue or rehome any animals in Scotland and by advertising here it has been intentionally adding to the confusion to make money.“The RSPCA is in breach of Institute of Fundraising guidelines it helped draw up which require charities to be explicitly clear about where they work. Occasionally using small print to tell the Scottish public it is registered in England and Wales is in no way explicit.“We are a completely separate charity and have asked the RSPCA to make it clear it does not save animals in Scotland so people can make an informed choice about who to donate to. However, after six months of talks we are no further forward.“This has been increasing the huge pressure on our resources for many years and enough is enough. It’s time the RSPCA told the truth.”Research has demonstrated that 70% of the Scottish public believe the RSPCA saves animals in Scotland. High profile RSPCA campaigns in Scotland last year included a membership drive in Scottish supermarkets and adverts on Scottish radio stations.“The RSPCA seems determined to portray itself as a UK charity, even if it is at the expense of animal welfare in Scotland,” said Mr Earley.“Further RSPCA advertising has included television adverts on UK channels. While these particular adverts cannot be restricted to England and Wales, they should not deceive the Scottish public.“We are therefore calling for the RSPCA to be explicitly clear in its advertising that it does not rescue or rehome animals in Scotland.“This could be by explicitly stating where it works or even describing itself as the ‘RSPCA for England and Wales’. Either would clear up the confusion almost immediately.“We are also calling for the RSPCA to at all times make it clear to anyone donating from Scotland that their donation will not help animals in their country.“This should extend to any legacies it receives made out to the ‘Scottish RSPCA’ or ‘RSPCA Scotland’. We believe these should come to us and be used to care for animals in Scotland but even this basic and fair principle has been rejected.“It is impossible to quantify how much we have lost to the RSPCA but any loss is damaging because we receive no government or lottery funding and rely on public support.“While anyone can of course support any charity they wish, we know the majority of the Scottish public would prefer their donations to help charities in Scotland and it is on this basis, in defence of the abandoned and neglected animals in need of our help, that we are taking this stance.“We did not want to have to campaign in this way and very much hope this brings about a change in RSPCA policy.”Mr Earley continued, “People will ask why we don’t merge. The answers are simple, the most significant of which is the Scottish SPCA is subject to Scottish law and, like the police in Scotland, is a reporting agency to the Crown Office, a status far greater than that afforded to the RSPCA.“Animal welfare is also a devolved issue in Scotland and the Scottish SPCA is in effect a legally recognised defender of animal welfare on behalf of the Scottish Government, which again is a status the RSPCA does not have in England and Wales.“Indeed, we are extremely proud of our influential role in the development of the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act of 2006 and subsequent legislation, which is a reflection of the excellent reputation the Scottish SPCA has with MSPs.“The Scottish public have their own animal welfare charity in the Scottish SPCA and it is essential they are aware of this fact.”

Ferrets [26 Jul 2008|06:17pm]
A friend has just adopted a couple of ferrets from an animal rescue, and while he seems to be reasonably well clued up on them (and has his first bitemarks), I was wondering if anyone had any hints and tips to pass on, or sites to recommend. They're both females, not very old, and he says:Dawn is a ferret's ferret who likes to get at my socks, steal things and explore ridiculous places. Dusk is a bit of a scaredy-polecat She tends to keep to the bottom levels of the cage, is wary of jumping off things and most importantly is scared of Dawn and squeaks at her and shits when Dawn wants to play rough. She's adjusting a lot more slowly, doesn't want to play fight with Dawn or me or play with any of the toy's I've offered. She does like exploring when I walk her, but tires quickly and decides to lie down in the street. They're still acclimatizing to his home, any hints, handling suggestions etc. could be useful.

Incas first show.. [09 Dec 2007|07:00pm]
Yesterday was Incas first agility show as Dog Vegas are running Grade 0 classes, for dogs between 15-18 months. What can I say?? She was a STAR!! (Its just a shame about the handler!)Her first (ever) run was Grade 0 agility. I was worried about keeping her in the ring and not going after the dog in the next one (or at the start line, or 3 rings over..). She got all her contacts and did all the jumps, however, I tried to race her out of the tunnel which inevitably didn't work as I had my back to her - I should have turned facing her I know. I was certainly impressed with the little lady, just not so much with myself. Her next class was Grade 0 Tunnel Happy. Happy she was but she wasnt so keen on the flat tunnel so in the end the judge had to hold it open. However, after that she flew round...its a shame we didn't start at the 3rd obstacle. Her final class was Grade 0 jumping. Again she suprised me and flew round the course. She just had to take a slight detour to see if dad was standing where he used to be (which he wasnt as I told him to hide around the corner, hence the video footage being taken from far far away). Still, a fantastic note to end on as she recieved just 5 faults!!

Stolen Dog [08 Dec 2007|09:08pm]
Ross Green had his car stolen Friday night while at a service station just off Junction 13 of the M1 on the way home from LKA (Toddington) his Sh Ch black and white Border Collie Tyson was in the back.Car registration details: Registration KJ55 XFZ Dark Blue Vauxhall Vectra Estate.Last seen J13 of M1 close to Milton Keynes.Anyone in the area please be aware - and keep everything crossed that the thief at least has the compassion to ensure the safety of the dog.Dog Lost Link:http://www.doglost.co.uk/forum.asp?ID=11724Poster Link:http://www.doglost.co.uk/poster.asp?ID=11724 Further information from an two emails (mixed together below) received on a forum: Friday Evening 7/12/07 .. A DARK BLUE VAUXHALL VECTRA ESTATE, Reg. KJ55 XFZ. with blackened windows was stolen from the garage opposite a training venue (Marston Moretaine, MK43 0LG). Ross & Judith were returning home from a Championship Show at the NEC, Ross Green stopped at a service station, just off the M1 at J13. Whist paying, he saw a white youth jump into his car. Ross ran out, tried to smash driver window and then managed to open rear passenger door but as he did so the youth started the car and sped away towards the M1. They sped off heading toward the J13 - M1. In the back of the car was his and Judith Gregory's Black & White Border Collie, Tyson, (ShCh Tonkory Guinness) ... Police are searching but the service station was just a mile from the M1 and the driver could have gone in either direction. There was approx 150 miles worth of fuel in car. Please keep an eye out incase you see either the car or Tyson. If so, please contact Ross Green, tel no: 01234 838380 and/or the police. And pray for Tyson's safe return. This is a tragedy for both Ross and Judith. We are concerned that the car will have been abandoned and the dog would have been left inside. There is a reward and the telephone number to ring is 01234 838380 or myself on 08703216225 or email info@kukura.co.uk ... Any help would be appreciated. If you could forward this on to anybody you know that might travel in the surrounding areas that would be great. Thanks ... Darren & Val Tiller

Ecopetbed [24 Nov 2007|08:22pm]
I am thinking of switching to Ecopetbed instead of using my current card supplier (for various reasons). What I was wondering is if there is anyone who would be interested in either splitting a pallet or buying some off me if I did this. I'd much rather buy the full 24 bales rather than buying just 12 bales at almost the same price. I would obviously only be asking for the price I pay for the bales themselves(not for profit).Part way transport of the odd bale or two might be possible as I often travel about for dog shows (agility, obedience, breed).VickiSorted

Kitty Litter [05 Jul 2007|09:43pm]
[ **mood** | worried ] Hiya, I am new here. I've been looking around for a community in which I can get some adivce about my cat, Crystal. I am sorry if it is the wrong place to ask and if it is I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction please :)Crystal is quite an old cat at about 13 years old now. I love her to bits! Very recently she has been extremely picky with her food and sometimes not eating anything at all. She has also been sick once or twice and has suffered with really smelly diarrhea and we thought that it may be to do with my dad feeding her scraps at dinner. For now I've asked my dad not to feed her scraps and since then she hasn't thrown up, her eating habbits have gotten a little better and I don't think her diarrhea has been as bad. However, her kitty litter still really smells very bad! We usually clean it out every 3-4 days, but now when we clean it out it smells straight after her going in it! It's becoming a real problem, because the kitty litter is outside my bedroom door and my room really stinks of it every day, unless I clean it out every time she's been in it, which shouldn't be necessary.Would it be worth taking her to see a vet? Or could it just be simply be answered by changing the food she eats or changing the brand of cat litter? I just don't know why her litter smells so much, after 13 years of it being fine. I am happy to take her to see a vet but I just thought I'd get some opinions first and perhaps ask if also this has happened to your own cat before? Thanks in advance :)

[ **mood** | determined ] I'm taking part in the Flora London Marathon 2007 on 22nd April to raise money for Hearing Dogs For Deaf People.Fundraising has been going well. I've appeared in several local papers....and apparently I even train with all 4 dogs!!! ;)I have edited the online page so not to include gift aid in the total as apparently this doesn't count towards my target. However, Hearing Dogs does obviously benefit from the extra money so please remember to tick the gift aid box if you are a UK tax payer. I've got just over £1000 so far, but still need help to reach my goal of £1600.Please take a moment to sponsor me online. It's really easy - you can donate online by credit or debit card at the following address:http://www.justgiving.com/vickiblackshawAll donations are secure and sent electronically to Hearing Dogs For Deaf People. If you are a UK taxpayer, Justgiving will automatically reclaim 28% Gift Aid on your behalf, so your donation is worth even more. Please join me in supporting Hearing Dogs For Deaf People and a fabulous cause. Thanks everyone for your fantastic support,Vickiwww.girruf.com

Wales to ban shock collars [23 Jan 2007|06:28pm]
The Welsh Assembly intends to outlaw electric shock collars for dogs when the new Animal Welfare Act comes into force in March. The RSPCA are calling for the ban to be extended to England and Scotland as well. What's everybody's opinion on this? Do you think shock collars will be outlawed in the UK? Do you think they should be? Do you think a ban will work? Is anyone aware of any other country with a similar ban? I'd be interested to know everybody's opinion. :)x-posted with uk_dogsEdit: Whoops, forgot the link.
