Nancy, a lung cancer patient, shared that she felt guilty for smoking prior to her lung cancer diagnosis, but having the courage to seek treatment when she did has allowed her to live 20 years cancer free. There are over 2.4 million people living with lung cancer globally, many of whom deal with stigma after diagnosis. Anyone can get lung cancer, and nothing should stand in the way of a patient receiving treatment for their disease. Loono, founded by Kateřina Šédová 10 years ago, runs educational workshops about cancer, cardiovascular disease, and mental & reproductive health in Czechia, helping young people live longer, healthier lives through prevention. The Young Health Programme Lead2030 Challenge grant, given in partnership with One Young World, has helped Loono to develop a mobile app and online educational materials for young people, as well as foster partnerships with relevant organisations. Barbara refused to let stigma define her life despite her lung cancer diagnosis, and as a result, early screening led her to curative treatment. Too often, stigma associated with lung cancer prevents people from seeking care, leading to delays in diagnosis that can potentially worsen their prognosis.
