Today we publish the findings of the first two years of LitUp, our schools outreach partnership with National Literacy Trust. The aim is to boost reading pleasure and frequency in Hastings - one of the lowest literacy areas of the UK. And the results are significant! 📚 54% of children who claimed they rarely or never read in their free time before LitUp now read weekly 📚 65% of children who lacked confidence now describe themselves as ‘very good’ or ‘good’ readers 📚 79% of children said author visits made them ‘want to read more’ 📚 59% of parents said they are ‘more confident to support [their] child’s reading at home’ The NLT’s latest national research shows that reading is at an all-time low amongst children and young people, which is why effective projects like LitUp are so important. As the programme enters its third year, we are thrilled that our work is having an ongoing positive impact on the children, parents and teachers in Hastings. We are pleased to announce that Rahul Srivastava will be joining Bloomsbury Publishing India as Managing Director, as Rajiv Beri retires after 12 years with the company. Srivastava will report to Vafa Payman, Managing Director, Asia and Head of Acquisitions and Corporate Development, and joins Bloomsbury India in early 2025 from Simon & Schuster Publishers India, where he is currently Managing Director, South Asia. Rahul Srivastava brings 30 years of experience across Simon & Schuster Publishers, Random House, Penguin Books, and India Book House. Last week was International Open Access Week: a chance for Bloomsbury Academic, together with the wider academic community, to reflect on our journey towards the goal of making more and more important research available on open access (OA) terms – i.e. freely available online for anyone with an internet connection to read, download and share. Whilst open access isn’t new to us – we have almost 500 OA titles in our academic portfolio – we’re always considering ways we can widen access to vital research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. That’s why last year we launched Bloomsbury Open Collections, our equitable model for publishing collections of books open access at no cost to the authors.
