About us
C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis and create a future where everyone, everywhere, can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before. The current Chair of C40 is Mayor of London Sadiq Khan; and three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board. C40’s work is made possible by our three strategic funders: Bloomberg Philanthropies, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Realdania.

Today, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has concluded the 7th #U20 Summit. Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes presented the 'Urban20 Communique' to President Lula, underscoring the vital role of cities in combating the climate crisis. As #U20 draws to a close in Brazil, mayors reaffirm their call for US$800 billion annually by 2030 for urban climate action. Negotiators at #COP29 in Azerbaijan must take note - Despite shifts in leadership at the national level around the world, cities are doubling down on climate action. Local leaders know that we’re stronger together—and we’re committed to pushing for faster, fairer, and more impactful solutions, no matter the challenges. Our commitment is unwavering, and our resolve to protect our planet only grows stronger.
- The Women Leadership Session at #U20 is a testament to the incredible strength and vision of women leaders in the fight against the climate crisis. We were honoured to be joined by First Lady of Brazil, Janja Lula da Silva, on the deep connection between climate and gender equity. With women and girls disproportionately affected by climate change, their leadership must be central to the solutions The session was packed with dynamic conversations among influential women leaders. Mayors Kate Gallego, Carolina Basualdo, and Francineti Carvalho discussed their work to prioritise policies that support women and girls and the importance of women holding leadership roles to create a more equal and just world. Their expertise and passion are building momentum and driving local climate action. Keep an eye on our channels for more #U20 updates!
- Today at #U20, C40 and GCoM mayors revealed an urgent truth: cities are at the forefront of climate solutions, but their resources don’t match the scale to meet the challenge—or the opportunity. 🌱🏙️ 🇧🇷Mayor Eduardo Paes emphasised that current urban climate funding—$200B—is just one quarter of what’s needed for meaningful change. 🇫🇷Mayor Anne Hidalgo underscored the critical need to fast-track financing to empower cities to act swiftly on climate and development goals. 🌎Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Antha N. Williams reminded us that climate and development aren’t at odds: they’re the same agenda. Through CHAMP, cities are advocating for the national and international climate funding they need to drive impact.
- Today at the #U20 Summit, C40 Cities joins global leaders in unveiling an US$800 billion city climate finance ask. This funding will empower cities to lead systemic change and drive impactful local climate projects. C40 is calling for climate finance that prioritises marginalised, at-risk, and low-income communities to ensure that climate solutions promote social inclusion and economic growth for all. Here’s why this matters: 💰 Urban areas are critical to solving the climate crisis. This funding will empower cities to implement large-scale climate solutions: from renewable energy to resilient infrastructure. 🤝 The initiative aims to create quality green jobs, improve public health and enhance climate resilience, prioritising those most at risk from the climate crisis. 🏦 The US$800 billion climate finance ask is tied to reforms in multilateral development banks (MDBs), aiming to unlock additional resources for cities to scale climate action globally. - Today, Rio celebrates the launch of their Breathe Cities initiative, developed closely with Clean Air Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and C40 Cities, to reduce air pollution, cut carbon emissions, and improve public health. “We are at U20 - there is no better place to launch a program for Rio than here and today,” said Jaime Pumarejo, Executive Director of Breathe Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies first launched this ambitious initiative with London Mayor and C40 Co-Chair Sadiq Khan with the goal of reducing 30% air pollution on average across a cohort of 14 cities by 2030. “Public engagement is absolutely essential – The public feels the effects of poor air quality. When the public is aware, they can support air quality initiatives, policy changes, & hold public officials accountable," said Mayor Sackey of Accra. Antha N. Williams, who leads Bloomberg Philanthropies' Environment Program, emphasised the significance of the announcement, stating that “this initiative can have monumental wins for both people and the planet.”

At the #U20 Summit, mayors Eduardo Paes and Anne Hidalgo shared insights on the critical role of cities in addressing the climate crisis ⬇️ 📣Eduardo Paes: "The future of our planet depends on cities. If we don’t act, the chaos we see around the world will worsen. But when cities step up, we create hope for a sustainable, inclusive future." 📣"When cities act, we get things done. Reducing traffic by 40% cut air pollution by the same amount." said Hidalgo, reflecting on Paris’ transformation. Together, they reinforced that cities are problem-solvers at the frontline of the climate crisis, with proof that bold climate action is possible.🌱
