- Last month, the Harlow team had a monitoring visit from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), in which we are proud to say, was marked as ‘Excellent’ in the overall scoring. The project site received high ratings in the three categories, “Respect the Community," "Care for the Environment," and “Value their Workforce”. The Considerate Constructors Scheme is an independently managed, not-for-profit organisation that works side-by-side with the construction industry and the public to raise standards and build trust. This accomplishment highlights our dedication to responsible construction practices, community involvement, and environmental sustainability. A big thank you to our amazing team and all partners for their hard work and commitment to making this project a success.

- [Winter Maintenance❄️] Response to hazardous conditions In recent weeks, the UK has experienced a cold Arctic blast, prompting the Met Office to issue amber warnings for snow, icy conditions, and flooding across many regions. In response, our Colas Winter Maintenance teams have worked through the weekends and nights, minimising disruption and ensuring safe travel conditions for all road users. They continuously monitored weather conditions and road temperatures, implementing tailored strategies that facilitated smoother traffic flow and allowed emergency services to operate efficiently. From January 3rd to January 10th, the Cheshire West and Chester team completed eighteen gritting runs, covering fourteen primary, and fourteen secondary routes to combat snow and ice. The Area 9 team deployed thirty-seven gritters to manage hazardous conditions from flash snow events on key routes, supporting National Highways in keeping the road network clear and safe. While the south coast city didn’t receive snow, Portsmouth experienced heavy rainfall, raising concerns about icy conditions and flooding. The PFI team, taking precautions, deployed gritters across the city to ensure road safety. With the rain expected in areas alongside snow and ice, gully tankers and pump tankers were on standby to respond to localised flooding, ensuring a comprehensive approach to maintaining safe travel conditions. Additionally, volunteer drivers from various teams, including those from the supply chain, stepped up to assist with operations, significantly enhancing our capacity to manage these challenging conditions. Thank you to all our dedicated Winter Maintenance teams for their exceptional efforts in keeping our roads safe and accessible during this challenging time.
- Pothole or sinkhole?! Today is National Pothole Day so we thought we would share an incident in Portsmouth yesterday (January 14th) which highlights how quickly they can appear and how some can be particularly dangerous. Highways Inspectors on the PFI team responded to reports of what was believed to be a large pothole on a residential street. However, upon further investigation, discovered that it was not just a pothole, but a newly developed dangerous sinkhole in the road’s camber. Recognising the hazard, our Portsmouth PFI team acted quickly, excavating the area and implementing a permanent repair within two hours. Well done to all the team for the swift response and in keeping customers travelling safely. #ColasCares #NationalPotholeDay

- Colas Winter Maintenance teams are gearing up to tackle the challenges of ice and snow this weekend. With potentially difficult conditions ahead, many of our business units are preparing to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective responses to keep our roads safe and accessible through proactive gritting, snow clearance, and timely inspections. In Cheshire West and Chester, our teams are set to respond to the weekend's weather conditions with fourteen gritting routes prepared to keep the roads clear and safe across the region. The Newcastle team has been working throughout the winter months to ensure road safety in the face of changing weather conditions. This weekend, the team will continue their established plan, including two gritting runs through the night on seven routes to provide extra assurance for drivers navigating the roads. In Portsmouth, while the south coast is outside the snow and ice amber warning area, temperatures are anticipated to drop, prompting our Winter Maintenance team to deploy gritters to maintain safe travel and keep the city moving smoothly. In National Highways Area 9, gritters have already been deployed across the West Midlands network today and are scheduled to follow the gritting routes again in the early hours of Saturday. Our teams and all 37 gritters are on full standby from early Saturday evening ready to support National Highways requirements to keep the network running safely. Additionally, we are ready with multiple gully tankers to respond to any flooding across the Area 9 network.
- In recent weeks, it was announced that MAG (Airports Group) has appointed Allied Infrastructure as the primary contractor for Manchester Airport (MAN) and East Midlands Airports (EMA). As we wrap up the year, it's a great time to reflect on the projects we've been a part of in partnership with MAG this year. Early in 2024, Allied Infrastructure successfully completed the reconstruction of the Alpha Bravo taxiway at Manchester Airport. This critical project included AGL removal, PQC bay replacement, reinforcement mesh installation, and improvements to drainage and line markings. After extensive planning and using expert-driven methods, the team executed the project during a four-week taxiway closure, implementing diversion routes to maintain uninterrupted flights. Their efforts ensured the taxiway was ready for service in time for the busy Easter holiday schedule. Read the full article, and find the full video on our website: https://lnkd.in/eHA5PDa4
- [Did you see 👀] David Giles, Chair of the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) and Director of Continental Bitumen, highlighted the significance of the funding announced by the UK Government on December 20th as a starting point. In the AIA’s press release, David, pictured here with Colas CEO Faical Lahmamsi, said: “Our wish for the New Year is that this is a precursor to a multi-year ringfenced commitment from the Government to local roads. This will help to ensure better value for money for the public funds allocated and help to ensure we have a local road network that is safe, keeps people connected and supports economic growth.” Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eWMAvzBz
- As the holiday season approached, teams across our business embarked on a meaningful mission to support local communities throughout the UK. Colleagues participated in initiatives such as food, present, and toiletry collections, as well as wrapping Christmas presents, to assist local charities and non-profit organisations. In Harlow, children’s Christmas presents were donated to Rainbow Services, a charity which works for change to alleviate the effects of disadvantage, deprivation and social exclusion through imaginative projects. A variety of donated presents collected by the Harlow STC project were wrapped, and today, as part of their Christmas party, a festive grotto featured a visit from Santa, also known as Joe, Community Liaison and Social Value Officer at Colas, who personally handed out the wrapped gifts to children. We also coordinated donations for several initiatives across our contracts. These included Christmas dinners for the Hope Community Project, and present donations for the Cradle charity, both local to the Area 9 contract. In Chester, a "Bring a Tin to Work" initiative encouraged the team to donate food items, toiletries, and baby products for Changing Lives Together's "Very Green Grocery," helping struggling families access affordable groceries. Among other activities, the Portsmouth PFI team delivered presents to the Children's Ward at QA Hospital to spread holiday cheer to young patients. Additionally, across our contracts, volunteers assisted in packing and delivering food hampers for families in need. Overall, these efforts reflect our commitment to making a positive impact in the community during the festive season. Well done to all involved, and Happy Holidays!
- Happy holidays! ✨ All of us here at Colas would like to wish you, and your loved ones, a safe and joyous festive period.
