It's our job to look after your environment and create better places for people and wildlife.
About us
We are the Environment Agency. We are the biggest and most wide-ranging environmental regulator in Europe. We work with businesses and communities to protect and improve the environment, for people and wildlife. And the need for our work is becoming ever more important. We protect and improve the environment across England to: • reduce the risks to people and properties from flooding • help businesses and communities adapt to climate change • reduce pressures on biodiversity • help businesses to make sure they don’t harm the environment through pollution or taking too much water • issue licences and permits, and take action against people who don’t take their environmental responsibilities seriously. None of this is possible without a multi-talented team of professional and dedicated people. And just like the environment we help to care for, we’re home to an incredible diversity of skills and knowledge. Today, we employ more than 12,000 people throughout England in a wide range of roles. You’ll find leading scientists and prominent geologists alongside public relations professionals, planners and policy advisors. We employ lawyers, enforcement officers and engineers, conservation scientists and marine biologists. And of course we have a wide team of support staff. We employ people at all stages of their career, from recent graduates to experienced leaders and internationally-renowned experts. 93% of our flood assets are at or above their target conditions, but what does this mean for you? It’s simple: fewer properties damaged, fewer businesses disrupted, and faster recovery when it counts. And as extreme weather becomes more frequent, this work matters more than ever. - Wonder what the future holds for flood asset maintenance? From decarbonization through technology to how digitization is reshaping engineering practices, this edition of Current Magazine looks at how the role of asset maintenance is developing to help shape sustainable and resilient communities. 📢 Announcing our next Lead Environmental Regulator pilot: the Trelavour Lithium Project (Cornish Lithium Plc)! 📢 The Environment Agency is taking on the Lead Environmental Regulator (LER) role for the Trelavour Lithium Project - a proposed lithium production development in St Dennis, Cornwall. As LER, we will coordinate with Natural England to provide a single point of contact for the developer while aligning guidance behind the scenes. Alongside other pilots, this will test whether a more coordinated and bespoke regulatory service can reduce the time required for projects to progress through planning, permitting and licensing processes. The Trelavour Lithium Project would: ♻️ Reuse a former china clay pit for commercial lithium production, reducing the need for new extraction sites 🔋 Produce up to 10,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium hydroxide per year, creating a more sustainable domestic supply chain for batteries ⚡ Support UK advanced manufacturing sectors and the clean energy transition What does the pilot mean for environmental protection? By working with our partner regulators, we can take a holistic view of environmental risks and opportunities and provide clearer, more consistent guidance to support benefits for nature, biodiversity and local communities. The LER is piloting a reform to how regulation is delivered, not what is required of operators - it is intended to retain and enhance the delivery of all current environmental protections. The Trelavour Lithium Project joins three other EA-led pilots: East West Railway Company, Lighthouse Green Fuels and Sizewell C. Falmouth Docks, led by the Marine Management Organisation, and Lower Thames Crossing, led by Natural England, are also LER pilot projects. ➡️ Want to know more about LER and previously announced pilot projects? It’s organised profit-driven criminal activity. Waste criminals thrive when no one speaks up. Reporting organised crime is anonymous. If you know who is involved or see them operating in your area call our partner, Crimestoppers 24/7. Don’t let them get away with it.https://lnkd.in/eT8mQGGM

- Did you hear the news? Crayfish are back! After being raised at Flamingo Land, more than 180 white-clawed crayfish have been released into the Yorkshire Dales. This is part of a new conservation project in partnership with the Yorkshire Crayfish Forum🦞 White-clawed crayfish play a vital role in keeping waterways clean and healthy for all the species that rely on them.
- A man has been arrested in connection with illegal dumping of waste at sites across England. Our teams have been working relentlessly alongside West Midlands Police and this arrest is a vital step in holding these criminals to account. This is another step in our commitment to tackle waste crime and restore pride in local communities.https://lnkd.in/dAUSs9xU

Waste crime costs the English economy an estimated £1 billion every year. Yet only around 27% of waste crimes are reported. That means serious, large scale and hazardous incidents can go unchallenged – because too often, they go unreported. We’re working with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency to raise awareness of waste crime and its impact. It is not a nuisance. It is a crime. Visit our campaign page to learn more. If you’ve seen large-scale or repeated illegal waste dumping, you can speak up to Crimestoppers via our website or by calling 0800 555 111. You stay 100% anonymous. Always. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eT8mQGGM
