Foster + Partners and Neri Oxman complete the groundbreaking design and innovation lab for OXMAN, headquartered in New York City. Working at the intersection of computational design, robotics, green chemistry, biology, and ecological engineering, OXMAN’s new 36,000 square foot design and innovation lab is housed across two levels. The purpose built facility features ample indoor and outdoor spaces that enhance and complement the company’s interdisciplinary ethos and commitment to designing with, by and for nature. “Building a comprehensive understanding of OXMAN’s interdisciplinary ethos has been key to the success of this project. Our design provides the team with a range of cutting-edge spaces for research and development, which can evolve rapidly to facilitate changing needs and enable the most collaborative working scenarios.” Russell Hales, Senior Partner and Architect at Foster + Partners. A central atrium connects the two levels, fills the workspaces with natural light, and provides a 9.1-meter (30 foot) tall space for rigging and building large-scale projects. The centerpiece of the studio is a one-of-a-kind staircase, which is made from folded white metal and glass. All glass joints are concealed behind the balustrades to create a floating, seamless finish. All furniture is bespoke and has been designed by Foster + Partners Industrial Design working closely with OXMAN, including flexible workstations and integrated display systems that allow OXMAN team members to reconfigure their working environments with ease. 🔗 Find out more: https://brnw.ch/21wNjvO© Nicholas Calcott#Architecture #Construction #Design #IndustrialDesign -

Last week, Chris Trott, Partner at Foster + Partners, attended the C40 Cities and Urban Partners event on ‘Financing the Sustainable Transition of Our Cities - Taking a holistic approach to urban development to generate impact & returns.’ The event brought together different stakeholders and industry leaders to discuss how we can drive environmental change. Chris spoke on the topic of ‘Learning from the Urban Value Chain’, where he highlighted the pace of change in urban development has been slowed by industry complexity and fragmented nature of ownership, the opportunity lies in uniting all stakeholders—from finance to construction— ‘to sing together from the same hymn sheet.’ During the discussion, Chris also explored how cities and regional administrations play a pivotal role in creating large-scale refurbishment opportunities. He showcased how the private sector can scale up the response and create better integrating technology to make it easier for asset owners to get things done. He believes the next step is to fully transition to electrification across sectors.#Architecture #Design #Engineering #Sustainability #Construction #UrbanDevelopment #ClimateAction
At #NYCW2024 this year, alongside our strategic partners C40 Cities, we were proud to bring together 150 key decisionmakers for a critical event on the sustainable financing of our cities🌆🌿 For us, this event marks the next stage of our partnership with C40, providing an evidence base for #greenandthrivingneighbourhoods through our 22 pilot projects in cities around the world, and developing sustainable financing models to unlock different types of capital needed to make these projects a reality. Kicking off with two panels on ‘𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻’, we discussed what conditions and actors are needed to scale the technologies that will transform our building stock, to hearing from some of the inspirational institutional investors that have led the way in embracing sustainability as a key criteria in how they invest to shape the future of our cities. Proving the business case. We then rounded off our discussions by diving into new approaches to create neighbourhood-scale impact, hearing from Mayors and influential global organizations on the current state of our cities and need to act fast if we are to respond to climate challenges, as well as investors and developers on how they can respond to these needs with a new approach to long-term financing, both providing outsized returns and creating neighbourhood-scale impact. More than anything, we’re truly honoured to be able to gather together such an inspirational group of business and policy leaders at the forefront of the change our cities need and hope this will lead to many meaningful collaborations to come, our cities need it!💯 Thank you to our fantastic speakers Lola Woetzel, Christian Jølck, Chris Trott, Paula Kirk, Paul Polman, Nina Galbiati, Peter Stensgaard Mørch, Mikkel Bulow-Lehnsby, Jesse Shapins, Josh Sirefman, Bertrand Millot, Mark Watts, Anacláudia Rossbach, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven and Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE✨ And of course, thank you to our partners C40 Cities, we look forward to continuing to deepen our partnership together and respond to the need for #greenandthriving cities🌱🏙 - A major winery extension: Legacy of Bodegas Faustino opens. Commissioned by the fourth generation of the Martínez Zabala family, Foster + Partners has designed a major extension and refurbished the existing facilities at the winery in Oyón, Rioja Alavesa. In line with the practice’s unique vision and as one of Bodegas Faustino’s organisational pillars, sustainability is integral to the project with a new visitor centre that has been designed as a ‘Planet 1.0’ building. “Our valued relationship with the Martínez Zabala Family stretches back to the last two decades, when we first worked together on their Bodegas Portia in 2010. The new project in Oyón knits together the entire site with discreet, sustainable interventions to the existing buildings and landscape, and an entirely new visitor centre that provides a new social focus and image for the winery with an immersive experience for all.” Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman at Foster + Partners. The new visitor centre is designated as a ‘Planet 1.0’ building – as its carbon emissions can easily be absorbed by the Earth’s green cover – making it a true sustainable exemplar. The building also adopts an Energy Plus strategy led by the photovoltaic panels on the roof that produce more energy than required for building operations. The excess energy is diverted to the existing winery buildings. The building features large overhangs on all four sides to reduce heat gain from the sun while blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. 🔗 Find out more: https://brnw.ch/21wNeRi #Architecture #Design #Engineering #Construction #Spain #Winery

On site: Transamerica Pyramid Center. 🏗️ In the latest episode of the series, we look back at the restoration of San Francisco’s iconic Transamerica Pyramid Center. We hear from members of the design team, the client, and the construction team, who were part of the biggest renovation in the building’s fifty-year history. The film showcases the collaborative design process, highlighting how the project revitalises the ground plane by peeling back the layers of history and restoring the building’s relationship with the surrounding landscape. ‘We were very careful in our approach to the landscape and wanted it to be true to the original design concept but also native to what you would find in the California redwoods… we’ve added greenery and tree wells to the colonnade, an area that was very much stark in terms of its lack of nature. So, landscape has been carefully introduced to create place making around the site.’ Orla Punch, Associate Partner and Designer at Foster + Partners. 🎥 Watch the full video: https://lnkd.in/gVwbTUs6🔎 Find out more about Transamerica Pyramid Center: https://lnkd.in/gS7-qVm9 #TransamericaPyramidCenter #SanFrancisco #Architecture #Design #Construction - The regeneration of Old Trafford is one of the most ambitious projects in the UK. Inclusive design at Foster + Partners: how can we create spaces that work for everyone? The Inclusive Design Team is a newly formed specialist team within Foster + Partners’ Technical Design Group. Working closely with the studios, they promote inclusive design principles that are aligned with project goals and the practice’s standards. The team initiated a user research project with Sociability. As part of this, the team revisited the Imperial War Museums with a focus group, to understand how people with disabilities experience the space today. “At Foster + Partners, we believe that the built environment should be for everyone. We are striving to creatively embed inclusive design from strategy to completion, thinking beyond technical code compliance, and embracing diversity in mind, body, and space.” Suzan Ucmaklioglu, Inclusive Design Specialist at Foster + Partners. Thank you to those who took part in the project: Amy Kavanagh, Isaac Harvey MBE, Christopher Laing, Sociability, Matt Pierri, Jennie Berry and Suzan Ucmaklioglu. 📹 Watch the full video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e2fGaDAb🔗 Read more about the project: https://lnkd.in/epZf-37n #Architecture #Design #Sociability #AccessibleDesign #DisabilityDesign -
